From Effigy Mounds we headed south towards Iowa City, our stop for the night. We are staying at a Day’s Inn tonight. It was only 2:30p.m. when we checked in so we decided to head over to West Branch, just 13 miles away and visit the Herbert Hoover National Monument. Hoover was born in West Branch and his birth home, his father’s blacksmith shop, the school house and several other houses of the era and preserved here. Aug 8, 2010 - Herbert Hoover's Presidential Library, Museum, Birth Place & Grave Site

We decided that we are going to see President Herbert Hoover’s library and museum since it is on the way. We stop at exit 254 on interstate 80 to get gas and right down the road is the museum. There is RV parking. There are only a few cars in lots. Yesterday Saturday, August7, was the annual celebration of his birthday weekend. His actual birthday is August 10. Jun 29, 2009 - Herbert Hoover President Museum

We visited Herbert Hoover National Historic Site in West Branch the place he was born. You forget all the presidents and he was an amazing one. The most important fact for his presidency was starting UNICEF. Him and his wife are burned here. We are on to Minnesota now.

Summer 2009

Aug 19, 2008 - Herbert Hoover National Historic Site

We arrived in Marion, Iowa on Monday. We'll be spending the next couple of days visiting with Ann's younger sister and her family. We've also given ourselves a couple of days to do some sightseeing. This part of northeastern Iowa is a designated National Heritage Area called 'Silos and Smokestacks'. It encompasses a 37 county, 20,000 square mile area of over 85 historic sites, museums and scenic byways.
