Headed west from Chicago across Illinois and into Iowa (State # 11). A long day of driving across dead flat plains and the most boring state in the US. Stayed in the little town of West Bend, as close to the middle of nowhere as you're going to get. As we woke up to heavy rain we delayed our departure to update this travel log on the free internet. Unfortunately a lightning strike took the power down just as we were finishing and no I'm not making that excuse up.

Jun 29, 2006 - MOVING ON

And so, after two weeks, we left Decorah, Iowa. But before we did, we visited a few places we had wanted to be sure to see: the Stone Bridge, the Porter House Museum, Dunnings Spring, and Music Man! The bridge was close by our campground, crossing a small creek with trout in it. It was built of local limestone in 1875, set to be demolished in the 1970s when the highway was to be changed, and saved when the local citizenry protested. The Porter House, built in 1867, reflected the history of the most recent residents, George and Grace...
