Aug 11, 2010 - Day 152 - chores in Iowa

Boy oh boy, did we ever have a thunder and lightning storm last night! No wind like Wisconson's storm, but a crack that made me jump...and I don't usually jump! I was comforting Hunter at the time so he must have thought things were pretty serious. Well, I guess it could have been. Ames, Iowa is flooded, one dead, and the major north/south highway is flooded and closed near the city. I'll be heading up that highway tomorrow, but I'll be north of the area. Iowa has had over 30 inches of rain in the last 60 days. Our noise lasted only about...

Aug 10, 2010 - Day 151 - A dreamy day

No, I didn't meet a Mr. McDreamy...but the day was so very good. I would welcome Arizona heat, but other than the humidity it's wonderful here and a wonderful day. This morning was the second morning on my trip that I could not see out my windows because of the condensation on the exterior! Yes, HUMID! The other morning was in Michigan. Hunter and I first ventured down the road a couple of miles to the community of Hazelton which has a very nice park. It's not a zoo, but does house several animals that cannot be released to the wild,...

Aug 9, 2010 - Day 150 - STATE #36 - IOWA

I hightailed it out of Bark River first thing this a.m. Well, after walks with Hunter (covered in mosquito spray) and coffee. My section in the park was scenic and newer RVs were around me but there was just something about the park I didn't like. We also had a bad night...at about 3 a.m. the movement of the 5th wheel woke me up. It was wind and in no time, lightning and thunder were right on top of us. It poured, the wind blew (I was waiting for a tornado), the thunder rolled and Hunter shook for over an hour. Getting on the road was great...

Jun 23, 2010 - Oelwein, IA

We arrived in Oelwein (pronounced Ol-wine) in the late afternoon. This is definitely a rural area, so we’re glad we’re staying only 5 days. There are just corn fields after corn fields and then…is it a mirage??? No, it’s really an RV park and a golf course! We’re staying at Lake Shore RV Park, which is one of our membership parks, located on Oelwien Lake with a 9 hole golf course within walking distance right at the front entrance to the RV park. The RV park is very well maintained and the lake is very pretty with a swimming section and...

Jun 21, 2010 - Monday Oelwein, IA

We had brunch with Rich and Diane (thank god for relatives who understand that everyone doesn't get up at dawn!!) at Floriana's Cafe. When I discovered that we'd be camping in Iowa tonight, I bemoaned if only I'd known... I've become a fan of the History Channel's new show American Pickers and I know their home base is in Iowa. So Bob said look up the address on the internet. Well who would have believed it, but they were just across the Mississippi from the part of Quad Cities (Davenport Bettendorf Iowa and, Moline and Rock Island,...

The Trip of 2010

Jul 16, 2007 - Oelwein, Iowa

After Springfield & St Louis, our next stop was Oelwein, Iowa. Oelwein is a small town in NE Iowa in the middle of Amish Corn Country. It is pretty, green rolling farm country. On the way to Oelwein, we stopped at the Herbert Hoover National Historic Site in West Branch, IA. Hoover was born born here, and his family's small cottage and their Quaker Meeting House have been restored. His museum/library and burial site are also located here. It was interesting learning more about one of our less prominent presidents. While in Oelwein we...
