Sep 17, 2012 - Red Rock & Pella

Sunday drove 18 miles out to Red Rock Lake the largest lake in Iowa, years ago there were 4 towns where the lake is but when they built the dam they then flooded the area most people had left years ago after they had closed the coal pits down. We walked over 6 miles around the lake and over the dam, glorious day for it. Then drove onto Pella only 3 miles away a little town with a touch of Holland where loads of Dutch people settled many years ago, even a Windmill in the town.

Wandering America

Sep 17, 2012 - Winterset & Des Moines

Good flight out finally got to the hotel at 11.30pm US time after leaving home 8.30am our time. Woke up to rain but it stopped by the time we had got to storage to pick up RV & Car. We arrived to find a flat tyre on the car which Wal managed to pump up with a foot pump looks like it might need a new one as that tyre had gone flat before. Both the RV & Car started first time which was brilliant usually we always have to call out breakdown for the RV, so we were on the road by 9.40am driving to our first campsite which was only 33 miles away....

Jul 30, 2011 - Travel day - Newton, Iowa

Travel day from Greenwood, Nebraska (Pine Grove RV Park and Campground) to Newton, Iowa (Newton KOA). Our time in Nebraska was kinda quiet due to the fact that Ken is still fighting his infection but we still had a great time visiting with Gwen, John and Aaron. We was fortunate to be close to family with his relapse and was able to get great medical care. We was able to pick Aaron up several times from Kids Club and go for lunch at his choice of dining places and then playing some Wii or shopping or just plain relaxing. Also enjoyed...

Jul 11, 2011 - Newton, Iowa, USA

We decided to stop in Newton, Iowa at a KOA for 3 nights. We replenished the groceries, did 5 loads of laundry, and cleaned the coach. Later today we will go looking for a barber shop for Clarence. This morning at 4:00 AM we were awakened to strong winds and rain. We turned on the TV and there were all kinds of warnings out. We got dressed thinking we might have to go to the campground bathroom which was listed as their tornado structure. However, the storm passed and all is well at the campground. There were a couple of semi trucks blown...

May 20, 2010 - Newton, IA

May 20 Newton KOA Newton, IA Our destination today was supposed to be Rock Creek State Park in Kellogg, IA. We had stayed there 2 years ago and it is a great place. When we got there, today, most of the sites were reserved and the two that were open we decided against due to the looks of the campers nearby. (Okay so we’re snobs!) We found a KOA in Newton and stayed there. It was a clean campground but not what we would prefer. It backed up to the highway so quiet time wasn’t possible. We found out that the Iowa Speedway was this weekend and...

Oct 2, 2009 - Iowa in the Rain

THURSDAY, October 1 -- It's been raining off-and-on all day. We arrived at the Rolling Acres RV Park. It's in the town of Newton, just 8 miles down the road from the campground we were at in June of 2008 - "the Tornado episode". We decided to not tempt fate by staying there again. FRIDAY, October 2 -- Still raining. Nothing heavy, just pesty stuff. Drove south to Pella to see the sights. Spent several hours touring through the Interpretive Center at the Pella Historical Village and Vermeer Mill & Windmill. The windmill tour was quite...

After leaving Washington, we drove down to Oregon and crossed the northern part of the state on I-84 from Portland. The 1st 100 or so miles travels along the Columbia river and it is beautiful scenery. Dams, mountains and rivers all showing the beauty of our great country. Then lots of MOUNTAINS. This week has been mostly a week of traveling. After Oregon came Idaho and then Utah, and then Wyoming and Nebraska. Tonight we are just east of Des Moines Iowa and hope to make it to Indiana tomorrow and spend a few days with Jerry and Carolyn....

Sep 26, 2008 - Day 5 on Interstate 80

Day 5 Today’s been a pretty quiet day. Mom started off again and a couple of hours into her drive she’s telling dad to go back and fix a snack. She usually fixes the snacks and feeds them to dad. He’s doing a great job. I can see him through my “soft side”. Dad’s telling her to look for a truck stop so we can fuel up this boat. She says she’s getting sleepy and needs a cup of coffee. “Well, pull over and I’ll drive”, he says. “But you only want to make one stop” she says. “If you’re tired pull over!” “I’m awake now!!” But there’s a rest...

Roaming with Radar

Jun 6, 2008 - Newton IA

With over 40 years of working in Broadcast TV I have never seen a weather man fired for getting the report all wrong. It has not changed. All the Storms and Tornados that were forecast turned out to be a clear blue sky day with lots of sun. We stopped in Newton IA at the Rolling Acres RV Park. Friendly campground owners and some traveler’s discounts made the end of the day even more pleasant. Great campground for walking the dogs, meeting neighbors and just plain relaxing. The wind had stopped and it was a pleasure being outside enjoying...

A celebration was to take place for them at the High School.
