Sep 28, 2018 - Union Pacific Railroad Museum

Long drive to Council Bluffs, Iowa from Chicago due to all of the construction on I80W. When I got to town I only had an hour to tour the Union Pacific Railroad Museum. The museum took over the 1903 Beaux Arts Carnegie Library which had been abandoned a few years earlier when the town built a larger more modern library. The building itself is gorgeous but taking a photo was imposible due to constant rain. I have been to lots of railroad museums but I learn something at each one. Today the highlight for me was a simulator of the conductor's...

Jun 12, 2018 - To Council Bluffs, Iowa

Today I really awakened rested. Best sleep I've had on the trip. It was also a very pleasant drive today. Beautiful weather through the rich land of the Midwest. The earth and all that's alive upon it are glad that the bitter winter is now a memory. I dropped down to the 2000-2300' elevations and there was much action on the fields and crops beginning new growth for another season. Such a dramatic contrast in topography and flora - and I'm sure the fauna though I didn't see any - than the high, dry lands of Nevada, Utah and Wyoming. Buddy...

Nov 6, 2015 - Where to next??

After nearly a month in Forest City, we are feeling a little uncertain about where we're going next. Our plans were to head toward the Carolina's, but now we just can's seem to work up much enthusiasm. Guess we'll head to Arizona or S. California and consider options as we get near there. We spent 2 nights at the Horseshoe Casino RV Park.

Dream On

Oct 1, 2015 - Council Bluffs, Iowa - Lake Manawa State Park

Hello Everyone, Today we stopped in Council Bluffs, Iowa to see one of the remaining 5 states on our USA tour we have yet to visit! While there, we stayed at Lake Manawa State Park where the campground is right on the lake with great boat access. We also took the scooter into town to see all the local sights. These ranged from a water tower shaped like a Tea Pot, to a HUGE Gold Railroad Spike monument, to a Squirrel Cage Jail with rotated back in the day, to visiting the local Union Pacific Railroad Museum. Afterwards we scootered to Iowa...

Jul 14, 2015 - Council Bluffs, Iowa

We stayed at Duck Creek RV Park in Paducah, KY on Sunday. We rode to the historic waterfront area at the confluence of the Ohio and Tennessee Rivers. Wall to Wall outside murals depict the area's history. We ate lunch at Shandy's and found ice cream at the Dairy Queen. We drove to Columbia, MO on Monday and stayed at Cottonwoods RV Park. It was a nice park but very HOT there. On Tuesday we took a route of 63 N and 36 W which kept us off of the interstate for half of the day. There was light traffic which was nice. At Council Bluffs we...

Jun 7, 2014 - Council Bluffs, IA

Had rain most of today. We started to slow down our travel time. We took a scenic byway tour in Iowa of the bluffs which are made of Loess - a fine soil made by the grinding motion of glaciers. Usually the soil just stays on the ground, but in Iowa and a location in China, it has been blown into bluffs. The farms on the bluff have terraced off the hillsides much like rice paddies.

Our Dakotas Trip

May 13, 2014 - Day Trip: Council Bluffs, IA

We slept well. We eat breakfast at Denny’s. We have a 10:00 appointment at for our oil change. There is a problem at the gas station. We are too heavy for their lift. It is time for plan B. We take a back road into town through a sea of houses. There is a second Valvoline store and they treat us wonderfully. They would have had no problem yesterday with our trailer. Our oil change complete, it is now time to explore. I sense a bit of a rivalry between Nebraska and Iowa. Every time I tell someone that we are going to Council Bluffs, Iowa,...

Sep 9, 2013 - Cheyenne to Council Bluffs, IA

September 9 We stayed in the Cheyenne KOA which is east of the city on Hwy 80. Very nice camp complete with shelter, electric stoves, microwave, dishwashing facilities which are rarely available. Josh and his friend, Melissa, drove from Denver to meet us for dinner at the Capitol Grill. The menu was completely different than what was posted on line. Instead of interesting entrees, we found fairly common steaks, pastas, wedge salads etc.. The wine list (attached)offered about 13 choices all of which were less than $30/bottle. The most...

We are now in Council Bluff, Iowa just across the river from Omaha, Nebraska staying at the Horseshoe Casino RV park. Friends of ours from Mission, Texas Dick and Kay Stock live here in Council Bluff and we have spent some time visiting with them and playing golf with Dick at his Golf Course. Yesterday we spent the day touring Nebraska City where Kay grew up, she was an excellent tour guide. We returned home and after getting our stay here extended we went over to Dick and Kay's for Pizza, Beer and good conversation. We had planned to...

Jul 16, 2013 - RJ explores the RV roof...Council Bluffs, Iowa

We are learning to accept the reality of an older rv...at least one thing to fix each day...mostly minor, but it got a bit scary when RJ climbed up on the roof and started throwing down the pieces of the A/C cover. It seems that after a pleasant side trip to Independence Mo to see the Truman Library, we had done some sightseeing, thru areas filled with fine Victorian homes and lovely tree lined avenues...and had badly damaged the plastic domes over the air conditioners. After a useless side stop at the local Camping World, we were told...

Mar 30, 2013 - on familiar ground

Yesterday's drive through the Rockies was a challenge. Today's through the flatness of Nebraska was blessedly boring. Only one million folks live in the whole state and 60% of them live in Omaha, so the road was empty. Part of the route followed the North Platte River and we saw huge flocks of birds congregating in the nearby lakes. Perhaps they were snowbirds heading home just like we are. There aren't that many campgrounds along this stretch of I-80 and we're not sure whether they are open yet, so we opted for the campground at the...

Sep 27, 2012 - Mitchell, SD to Council Bluffs, Iowa

WOW, the smell of cattle was overwhelming this morning. Don't know why...maybe it's the change is wind direction or something! So glad that we were heading out of town!!! The "look" of the highway was pretty much the same as the day before...field after field after field after field (you get the idea). Again corn was the main crop followed by wheat. As we got closer to Sioux Falls, we noticed more color (RED). It was nice for a change...several days of nothing but green (evergreens), yellow (aspens and birch), and brown (harvested fields,...
