May 5, 2012 - Reiman Gardens Butterfly Conservatory

Lee and I spent more time in the Butterfly Conservatory than Danica and the kids did but, of course, we were getting pictures! When we finally came out Danica was sitting on a bench reading children's books to the kids. They are easily kept occupied! After we left the gardens, we decided to get something to eat. Danica wanted to eat somewhere where she had dined when she want to Iowa State so we decided on pizza (I know not diet food)! We went to Great Plains Sauce and Dough. If you have never been there, have the thin crust pizza! I was in...

Our 2012 Travels

Jul 17, 2009 - Rockford, Ill., to Ames, Iowa

Today was a much better day. We are done for good with big city driving (we think) and relieved. Even though it was one of our longest driving days, it was much easier. This morning we left Rockport, Ill., got back on Highway 20 and headed west toward Iowa. For lunch, we stopped in Galena, Ill., a quaint touristy town that was home to Ulysses S. Grant. We had lunch in a park hear the Grant Home, and then checked out the antique stores and other cute shops. We bought some homemade taffy to snack on and a box of chocolates for our hosts for...

Aug 12, 2008 - Midwestern update

We arrived at last in Ames, Iowa on Sunday evening to the welcoming Banitt family. The kids have been reuniting with cousins, the grown ups are all catching up on the latest news, and we have been sharing the Olympics together. Uncle Bill gave us the technology and password to his Slingbox, in layman's terms, a way for us to access his TiVo over the internet so we can watch the equestrian portion of the games. Thanks Uncle Bill! We took a scenic byway into Iowa (yes, there is one, now stop the snickering!) going through my family's hometown...

Jul 22, 2008 - Stage 3-Jefferson, IA to Ames, IA....57-miles and 1,377 feet of climb

Tough getting started today……but after the first 6-miles things started feeling better. The route was much flatter today, and only half the distance…..and the weather was perfect….sunny and low 80’s. The only downside of flat land is trying to keep up with Sean and Joe…..climbing hills is where I usually catch up…but with no hills, it was hard to catch up. For some reason, they really were rolling today…..but we did take time at some of the towns. We stopped in Ogden, IA for breakfast…….but after checking out the situation, breakfast was...

Tour de Iowa

May 26, 2007 - Up north, through Missouri and on to Iowa

One last morning cup of coffee on the deck and off we go to head north. Our stop for tonight is the Walmart store in Ames,Iowa. We have stayed here before on our way north and always enjoy shopping and an easy route off the highway and back on. An interesting day of travel, we usually do not plan to travel on holiday weekends but seem to have missed most of the traffic by waiting until Saturday am and we got to enjoy watching others already celebrating their Memorial day weekend. Even found a town named after my family(I think I can say...
