Sep 21, 2010 - Mishawaka, IN

Still Just Hangin’ Out!21 Sep - I went for a short geowalk before departing Sam’s around noon for the Walmart in nearby Mishawaka. I stopped at the bank and went for a short walk in downtown Elkhart and again at a Walmart on old US 20 en route. I arrived at my destination around 4 and met my RV buddy Patsy and her sister and brother-in-law at a nearby Culver’s at 5 for dinner. I got back to the RV shortly before a t-storm hit.

Road Trip 2010

Aug 7, 2010 - Lake Erie

This was our first anniversary. I did not know how we are going to celebrate it as P is very good with planning. He had a lot of pressure on him (emotionally exerted by me) as he has always given me great surprises. And this one was great too. We went to Lake Erie on Saturday. We left our home at 1 pm and reached there by 3.30-4.00 pm. He had reserved Hilton Hotel room (at Downs drive) already. We checked into our room and immediately left for the beach. We parked our car there and took some pictures near the lake. We then rented Surrey...

Jul 14, 2010 - Michigan City, IN

Indiana Still Wants Me!14 July - I went for a 4 mile geowalk around Cabela’s before taking off around noonish and picked up 4 caches along the way. I had planned to get more but couldn’t figure out how to get to them due to the freeway on/off maze. I tried to drive to one of them on my way out of town but couldn’t even figure out how to do that. I think the shopping center I was trying to find has been demolished. That’s what I get for using outdated maps. After a short drive to Michigan City, I took a walk in the mall and then moved down...

Road Trip 2010

Jul 13, 2010 - Hammond, IN

Indiana Wants Me!13 July - After shopping and walking about in Sam’s/Walmart for a couple of hours, I got underway around noon and was soon driving through downtown Chicago. It wasn’t too horrible but not really great fun either. I figured out how to get through the Chi-town area without using any of the numerous toll roads and still managed to avoid a lot of stop and go traffic. I am now parked for the night at Cabela’s in Hammond among a passel of loud and stinking big rigs. The signs clearly indicate “No Overnight Truck Parking”. I guess...

Road Trip 2010

Aug 14, 2009 - Indiana & Chicago, Illinois

Once we got to Chicago we checked into our hostel which I was pretty impressed with. Andy and I shared with Jon, Johan, Bennet and Helen. That evening we had proper Chicago deep dish pizza before going on Bobbys bike hike tour of Chicago. The tour was fab and lots of fun as we whizzed around the cycle paths and saw the skyline by day and night. Went right through the city on the roads causing chaos as we went!! Afterwards we went to Navy Pier where I had a lovely strawberry daquira before we all hitched a ride home.........in a limo :-) we...

Trek across USA 2009

Sep 8, 2008 - Notre Dame

I mentioned in my last post that we were thinking of going over to have a look-see of Notre Dame. It turned out to be about 13 miles from our campground and it was a good thing that we went on Sunday instead of Saturday… We hadn’t even given it a thought but Saturday was Alumni Day at the Fighting Irish football game. I never did hear who won but we did get to the stadium and to the beautiful University. We found a parking place and went first to the book store. What a nice place. We felt like we were in Barnes and Noble there were so many...

Aug 18, 2008 - Indiana Dunes

Indiana Dunes State Park is a special place for us. It was Sue’s most favorite place during our time living in the Chicago suburbs. I enjoy the Dunes as one of the unique ecological environments in the United States. The most obvious draws of the Dunes are the sand dunes and Lake Michigan. There are a number of hiking trails in the woods, on the dunes, and across the lakefront. As one stands on top of a dune the view to the northwest is sand, grass and water. But a simple 180 degree turn has one looking over the green forest that lies...

Sep 16, 2006 - Boondocking for the first time

It's been a long time since I posted on this blog mostly because of computer malfunction. We left Sauder Historical Village and drove to Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore for our first taste of boon docking. It wasn't too bad. We did a lot of reading and the weather cooperated with cool evenings, so no need for air conditioning. The mosquitoes were the worst that I have ever seen in my life however. They had had a really bad storm about three weeks previous (while we were in Michigan - we remember hearing about it on the TV.)Lots of trees...

Two Hams in a Can

Sep 1, 2002 - South Bend & Sauk City

Labor Day was a travel day back towards Sauk City for my Wednesday Dr. appointment. The only noteworthy event was the restaurant we stumbled onto in Joliet, Il. Al's Steak House -- been there forever, Frank Sinatra music, dark booths, real service, and the most wonderful Veal Oscar for $14.75! I'm sure that at one time this was a coats and ties only place -- but today anything goes -- including our shorts and shirts (horrors!), as we didn't know what we were getting into -- another one of our "drive around till we see something interesting"...
