Aug 19, 2018 - Ohio to Nappanee, Indiana

2018-08-19.Through Ohio to Nappanee, Indiana Observations and thoughts about this part of mid-America.... Each town's borders is marked not by the "Welcome to" sign but by the Dollar General store. Water towers proudly proclaim the names of the local high school football teams in each community. Racing freight trains across the Indiana farmland. Listening to the song of the train whistle seemingly ever present on the wind. This is the heartland. Small towns tired and worn but all boasting an American Legion post with FFA signs punctuating...

Oct 16, 2017 - Day 1 of looking for sculptures in Michiana country!

There are 56 life size sculptures in six cities in this area of Indiana (love that they call it Michiana!) made by Seward Johnson and I want to see them all before they are removed this Friday, so I started this afternoon by visiting the ones in Goshen, Nappanee, and Wakarusa. First I volunteered a couple of hours driving a gas-powered golf cart around the park giving rides to women going to and from the session buildings and the RVs. The convention starts Tuesday night, but there are two sessions going on now dealing with RV maintenance....

Aug 31, 2017 - Amish Acres

On Thursday, we went on an excursion that was coordinated by Grand Design. This trip was to nearby Nappanee Indiana to the Amish Acres. Amish Acres is an 80-acre Old Order Amish farm that was homesteaded in 1839 and is now open to the public. There are two restored barns that have been converted into a gift shop and restaurant that serves "Thrasher-style" meals. We rode around the farm on a tractor-pulled trailer, with a stop at the one-room German schoolhouse where our Amish guide told us about the history of the farm and Amish life....

2017 Life in our RV

Aug 23, 2016 - Finishing the work on the RV and a wonderful Amish dinner

Up early this morning again, 5 am to shower, get dressed and get the RV ready to take. This morning we are going to drive about 8 miles outside of town to a diner at a crossroads, this is a truckers stop. The name is 20th Century Restaurant, and they mean mid-20th century. Neat little place with a great breakfast and not much cost. I then drove Charlotte back to the lounge and headed out to explore. I stopped first at a bakery to check out their breads, and found a couple of nice loaves of bread. I found some other neat things that could be...

Aug 22, 2016 - Getting work done on the RV and Menno-Hof

Up at 5 this morning. We have to be up, dressed and RV closed up ready for the technician to come at 6:15 am to pick up the RV. While in Pensacola our fresh water tank got contaminated so first he is going to flush the tank and sanitize it so we can use it. We are going to have the slide-outs serviced to make sure they keep working well, they are doing a little service work on the engine and making sure the RV rolls down the road smoothly. Jonah is our technician, who happens to be Amish, and he gave us some recommendations on what to do in...

Aug 21, 2016 - Napppanee Indiana

Sadly we are heading out again. Today we are heading to Nappanee, IN which is the home of Newmar Coach, the manufacturer of my motorhome. We are going to have a few things fixed at the factory. Following the route on our GPS, more than half of the days driving was on the back roads of Michigan and Indiana. I love seeing this farm land with the neat old homes and barns with the silos and all the fields. It was a wonderful drive. We got to Nappanee and found the complex for Newmar and the place where we are to park the RV while it is getting...

Aug 25, 2014 - Nappanee, IN

We have been wanting to tour the Newmar RV plant since we bought our coach in 2009. We finally were able to do that today. It was very interesting and it made us feel good about the quality of the RV that we have. Unfortunately they do not let you take photos on the tour! As we start home, I decided to post a few photos that I have not posted before. One is special because it is of Uncle Jim with some of the ladies on the tour. After that photo he kept telling everyone that he felt like Samson! Then there is a photo taken when there were 8...

Aug 2, 2014 - Indiana

Arrived in Nappanee on Tuesday @ Newmar Factory (Camp Newmar) as we had an appt. to have a few items repaired. Since we are in Amish country they start work very early in order to go home and do their farming; so we had to arise at 4:30 am for them to pick up the coach at 6. Maddie kept going to her bed and wouldn't eat, so when they picked it up we loaded her into the car along with food and water for our day of wait. After she ate we took at nice walk, the weathers was brisk, then went to breakfast. The weather has been delightful with...

Jul 21, 2013 - Back to Indiana

July 21, 2013 Burtchville, MI – LaGrange, IN - Nappanee, IN 295 miles We said our goodbyes to Pat and Pam early and were on our way to Indiana. They certainly were wonderful hosts and hope that we will get to reciprocate at a future date! Sunday morning is a great time to travel the Interstate system near Detroit. The highways were nearly empty until we got to Lansing. Although the traffic picked up we were still able to make good time and crossed the Indiana border close to noon. Soon we arrived at Jim Kelley’s home in LaGrange after a...

Nappanee, IN 10 miles We awoke to the arrival of the first worker at the factory at 3:40 AM. By 5:00 AM the entire factory was humming in full swing. At 6:15 AM the Customer Service Department came to the parking area in golf carts and started collecting customer’s units. This area works 6 AM -2 PM. We had a leisurely morning as our unit was not scheduled for repair until next week. We spent the time drinking coffee, eating breakfast and meeting other Newmar owners from around the country. Another Ventana was a few spaces away from us with...

Jul 10, 2013 - On to Nappanee

Casey, IL – Nappanee, IN 248 miles We awoke in Casey to the sound of crashing thunder and pouring rain. The admonitions of the Weather Channel the previous night had come to fruition and we looked outside to find the campground flooded in 3 -4 inches of rain and a torrent of water rushing down the gravel streets. We decided that discretion was the better part of valor, cancelled our plans to visit the Lincoln Log home and sat tight in the motorhome until the rain quit about 10:30 AM. Then we quickly buttoned everything up and started toward...

Apr 25, 2013 - Nappanee, IN

We arrived in Nappanee at about 4:00 today. We have full hooks and are staying at the Newmar plant RV park, they offer it at no cost for owners. We decided to order a pizza and stay in, since we have been here before and have to get up early in the morning. The pizza we got was so good, Rick says it is the best he's eaten since Elfredo's in Sioux City. The place was Samuel Mancinos.
