May 9, 2013 - Le pays des Amish

Oct 3, 2011 - Elkhart and Middlebury

On a beautiful (68 sunny degrees) day we drove around Northern Indiana's Amish country from our campground in Elkhart to Middlebury. First, we stopped at the Elkhart Visitor Center and obtained brochures and maps on 1) a Heritage Trail which has "Elk-on-Parade" throughout the communities; 2) quilt floral designs and murals planted or painted at various sites throughout the communities; and 3) factory RV surplus stores (you never know what you might see that you just must have). Although the quilt floral designs had been a scenic marketing...

Wandering Woodruffs

Sep 23, 2010 - 2nd Trip To Middlebury

From Elkhart Campground – Elkhart, IN Today, we toured our second RV factory……Jayco in Middlebury. We decided to tour this manufacturer when it was discovered that they were replacing their older Designer model with a new one in 2011 called the Pinnacle. Rudy had also talked to a new owner of this model at our recent overnight stop in Claremore, OK. Jayco had its beginning in 1968 when the founder began building “pop up” trailers on his farm in 2 chicken coops and the family barn. Today, it is the largest privately owned RV manufacturer in...

Sep 18, 2010 - Small Community's Fall Festival Celebration

From Elkhart Campground – Elkhart, IN With overcast skies and rain predicted for mid to late afternoon, we decided to get out early and drive to the nearby small community of Middlebury to check out the Fall Festival event taking place on Main Street yesterday and today. Middlebury also had another attraction I had placed on our “to do” list that was only available on Saturdays so both these places seemed to make up a good itinerary for the day. However, Meadow Brook Farm which in area tourist marketing was touted as having a history back...

Home Sweet RV - 2010

Jun 19, 2010 - Day 2: Indiana Amish Country

We had another long day today, driving a little over 500 miles. We drove through the rest of New York, a small tip of Pennsylvania, all of Ohio, and through some of Indiana. We are now enjoying the evening in our kamping kabin at a KOA. It is adequate with a set of bunk beds, a full-size bed, an air conditioner, a ceiling fan, and a few electrical outlets. It has a porch on the front of the kabin with a swing on it. Highlights of the day: Seeing all the grape vines along New York and Pennsylvania's I-90 Seeing all the farm country along...

Summer 2010

Apr 22, 2010 - Sunnybrook Dealer

Spent today at our Sunnybrook dealer's factory located in Middlebury, IN - Mennonite country. It's a trick to drive down the road and avoid the horse droppings - which can really play havoc grinding around truck and trailer wheels and flaps !!!!! Our water tank has been leaking since day one of trip and we were going to ignore it - but decided since we were so close to Middlebury - it might be worth getting it assessed. So glad we did - as it turned out we just needed some valve tightening. While there we mentioned a couple of other...

Westward Ho - Again

Aug 10, 2009 - Get started on RV early

Monday, August 10, 2009 We got up at 6:00am (E) time , so we can get the RV ready before the Service Center opens at 7:00am. We will need to get the slide-ins in and everything ready before they open. Three Campers showed up during the night. We waited in the RV and a guy named Ron came over to talk with us. Ron runs the RV section of the Factory. The other people that were waiting were with campers and they go to another section of the Factory. Ron got us started on our list. Kermit had faxed them the start of our long list of things to...

May 26, 2009 - Grizz Service and New Horns

On our way back to the factory, we stopped in Middlebury IN where our Grizzly coach was born. 5 months and 10,000 miles later, we had a few small things to get fixed. The Grizzly has been amazing and the only embarassment has been our air horn. It seems like New York City filed a federal complaint restricting air horns on trucks to a single not and a certain decibel rating. After talking to Wendy's dad, we opted for a set of Southern Pacific Nathan P3 Airchimes used circa 1960's. The folks at ShowHauler installed then and they are awesome....

Spring 2009 Tour

May 22, 2009 - Amish country

We asked about the best place to eat for lunch and were told to go through Middlebury to Das Dutchman Essenhaus....the recommendation was correct. The Essenhaus is a complex that includes the restaurant (both menu and family style dining), a bakery, a hotel, a conference center, and shops. We explored the food, the baker, and the shops. We brought individual angel food cakes for our dessert tonight. We are thinking about the breakfast buffet in the morning before we leave the campground. We saw many Amish buggies and Amish people as we...
