Oct 14, 2013 - Day 4 in Indianapolis

Today was a FULL day. I got up early and made my way over to National Headquarters for my meetings. It was an interesting time, learning a bit about some of the other Commanders. We had a group photo taken about mid-morning. After a Past Department Commanders Club luncheon, there were a few more sessions before heading back to the hotel. This evening, several of us attended the Ye Steivos dinner, which is run by the adjutants. Our state adjutant went through his coronation as "King" for the coming year. This dinner, which you are invited to...

Oct 13, 2013 - Day 3 in Indianapolis

Another beautiful day here. I had breakfast at a neat little place near the hotel called First Watch. It was a good find. Very busy, but quick service and good food. I wandered up to the Mall and caught the movie "Gravity" in 3D. It was great and a must-see on the big screen. I came back to the hotel and read some material in preparation for my meetings. Later, I visited the hospitality rooms for two National Commander candidates. In the Legion, potential National Commanders are identified far in advance. One of those I visited is the...

Oct 12, 2013 - Day 2 in Indianapolis

I slept really well last night and woke up refreshed at 6:30 AM. Unfortunately, that was Pacific time and Indianapolis is in the Eastern time zone, so it was actually 9:30 AM. Good thing I had nothing pressing here today. I grabbed a quick light breakfast in the Club Room, then went outside to see part of the Circle City Classic Parade. The Circle City Classic is a football event that includes a football game between two black universities. One of those teams is Gramblng State University and they have an awesome band. I got to see them pass...

Oct 11, 2013 - Off to the Fall Meetings

I have arrived in Indianapolis. What a day. Nancy dropped me off at the airport at 5:30 AM. My 7:15 AM flight was delayed for an hour and a half due to problems with the plane. That meant a missed connection in Minneapolis. I was scheduled to another later flight, but that one was delayed too due to a cockpit door that could not be locked. I finally got to Indianapolis at 6 PM. I opted to take a limo into town rather than wait for the bus (limos are cheap in Indy). After unpacking, I just went to the hotel bar for a hamburger -- that took...

Oct 1, 2013 - Indianapolis & Columbus, IN

From Michigan, we stopped in Elkhart for a final adjustment to the RV room slide-out mechanism, and headed South to Indianapolis, where we pulled into Lake Haven Retreat, our home base for the next 6 weeks. The visit with family started out with a bang, as our nephew, Bill and his fiance Jenni, were getting married in Springfield, Illinois. So family members from the Indy area (as well as some who flew in from Arizona and Colorado) all piled into vehicles to drive to Springfield for the ceremony and celebration. Jenni made a beautiful...

Aug 3, 2013 - Meetings Continue

I sure pooped out last night. After dinner with Troy, I came back to the hotel, watched a bit of news and was in bed before 9 PM. The meetings were much better today. Lots of good ideas were presented, so it felt more productive. Our presentation to National on our membership plan went well. They were complimentary. Our goal that was set seems reasonable, though there are Posts that will continue to grumble. Tomorrow, we fly back home. Looking forward to a normal diet and my good bed!

Aug 2, 2013 - Membership Meetings

Whoa... that 3 hour time difference is hard on us folks from the West. We are all yawning and trying to stay awake. The presentations have been a bit sluggish in the sessions Troy and I are in. The speakers get distracted easily. Perhaps tomorrow will be better.

Aug 1, 2013 - Headed to Indianapolis

Early wake-up this morning as I flew out to Indianapolis for a mandated Membership meeting over the next couple of days. My membership chairman, Troy Monholland, is flying with me. Indianapolis is a great city and I always enjoy a visit there (the National Headquarters is there). However, this is the meeting where our membership plan is submitted and our goals for 2014 are set, so there is a bit of apprehension there. Oh well...onward and upward!
