Sep 22, 2014 - Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore / State Park

The very southern end of Lake Michigan is a beautiful landscape of sand dunes, put in place partially by the Wisconsin Glacier, mostly by the northern winds over the centuries. Lots of beautiful sights only minutes from the busy cities of Gary and Hammond, Indiana and within sight across the lake of Chicago. A nice start to our trip to New York and the fall of 2014. We set up camp at Indiana Dunes State Park. The National Lakeshore was established during the Kennedy era ... it contains over 15,000 acres, includes over 15 miles of beach....

Aug 28, 2013 - Indiana

The day we left Niagara Falls NY, we traveled 536 miles in the Motorhome to get to Portage IN. Chuck must have been excited to get there! We arrived after dark in a hard rain storm but somehow managed to get set up. The rest of our stay (3 weeks +) has been very busy with seeing and visiting family and friends. Portage has a great bike path that runs East and West for 20 miles or more. Chuck has taken advantage of this and has ridden the path several times. One morning Terry, Karen, Chuck and I rode into Hobart for breakfast. Our son Mike...

2013 Motorhome trip

Apr 25, 2013 - The last full week of April

Last full week of April This week, starting with Monday, has been all about trailer and truck appointments. Monday we picked up a new tire in Elkhart and replacement awning motor in Goshen. We had dinner Monday night with Bob Tiedge of Lippert and Dale Fenton, developer and former owner of the Trail-Air system, in Goshen. On Tuesday Paul replaced our awning motor. I picked up parts at DRV, Ginger did laundry and we hit the RV surplus part stores in White Pigeon (MI). We spent some time with the Indiana Interstate crew after hours, had a...

Aug 27, 2011 - Fun Filled Day With Friends

From Oak Lake Family Campground – Fair Oaks, IN Joined by Skylair and Darin, friends now living in this area of Indiana, we made a visit to our second of the four National Lakeshores. Then the day’s agenda was topped off with two more Lake Michigan lighthouses. The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore runs for nearly 25 miles along the southern shore of Lake Michigan from Gary, IN on the west to Michigan City, IN on the east. The dunes of this northwest Indiana jewel provide an ecosystem unlike any other. It encompasses 14,000 acres of forest,...

Home Sweet RV - 2011

Aug 13, 2011 - Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore

Drove to Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore along Lake Michigan and stayed there three nights in Dunewood Campground with no electric, water or sewer hookups – really roughin’ it. We were in a site(barely) encased in the woods and it was so shady and dark, it was actually cool. Well, actually, it was only 76 degrees during the day and about 53 at night. There is one thing about getting “old” – at 62, you get a Lifetime Golden Access National Parks Pass for $10.00!!!! And….it only cost us $7.50 per night to stay in the campground – what a...

Jul 28, 2011 - The grass isn't always greener!

Today we decided not to wait around to recharge the AC unit. We headed for Burns Harbor, Indiana to check out a new motorhome. Jack has been considering trading this in for a different layout… something with beds that don't have to be deflated every morning. We drove out of Minnesota, through Wisconsin and Illinois (where we left at least $15 at the toll booths), and were into Indiana by about 4pm. When the GPS asked if we wanted to avoid the toll roads we didn't know how much it would cost! We got to Campland RV and looked at the Winnebago...

Sep 22, 2009 - Indiana Dunes State Park

After our visit to the Henry Ford museum we headed west across southern Michigan, then dropped down into Indiana. We stayed at a nice state campground with lots of trails through the old sand dunes. In the morning I took the kids for a hike, on what I anticipated to be an easy trail to the beach and Lake Michigan. It turns out the dune we had to go up and over was higher than expected. The trail had wooden steps up and over the dune, and there were 212 of them each way! Case did fine, but my buns were burning, especially since I was...

New York to Alaska

Jul 29, 2009 - Indian Dunes State Park

So we arriving in Indian Dunes State Park, Indiana and our camping in their campground. Got here in the late afternoon to a hugh storm coming in. So it poured very very hard about 8PM that evening and within an hour the campground was completely flooded. The pictures I took in the morning don't even show how bad it was, the water was half way up our back wheel, and the poor people in tents got very wet. All the stuff was drying all over the campground in the morning. As you can see Van put the electrical connection on chairs. We woke up to...

Summer 2009

Aug 20, 2008 - Indiana Dunes State Park

Drove through farm land in Ohio and most of the time in Indiana. Paid $7.50 to drive on the Ohio Turnpike (I-90/I-80) and $16.70 (!) on the Indiana Turnpike (still I-90/I-80). Maybe CA should start charging and get all of those out-of-staters. This is another great state park. Lots of trees, but we get the satellite (always good - the internet wouldn't connect at the last place). We're on the bottom of Lake Michigan and I just rode my bike down to the beach. It seems just as if you're at the ocean - lots of people on the sand and some in...

Aug 19, 2008 - Indiana Dunes

Indiana Dunes State Park. Great hiking trails, beautiful lake. We saw a Pileated woodpecker on our walk. (woodie wood pecker) Lake had rip currents so no swimming, and Connie swam on Thursday evening after our long walk up and down the dunes. Wednesday we went to Munster to visit Chris and family and meet my new grandson Anthony Rocco. Chris and Samantha are wonderful loving parents and well 2 year old Francesca is just brilliant. Next two days was getting to know this little family better. Saturday we went to the largest In Water Boat Show...

Aug 15, 2008 - A couple of great days!

We left the Detroit area on 08/12 and headed for Kalamazoo, Michigan. We weren't planning on doing anything once we got there (other than laundry & grocery shopping ) we were just stopping because it was about 200 miles from Detroit and there is one of our membership campgrounds here. ( and besides, Kalamazoo is a kind of cool name - come to find out it means 'bubbling or boiling water' ) From Kalamazoo we headed into Indiana and to the Indiana Dunes State Park. We had two great nights here and for the first time in a long time I wasn't...

Aug 22, 2007 - First Day

Arrived at Indiana Dunes without any trouble; today's drive was an easy one. Missed almost all the rain and all of the bad weather. Our decision to start a day later was certainly the right choice. The campground has been totally remodeled and it is beautiful. The sites are very nice with electric hookups. We enjoyed a nice walk on the beach but no swimming as the lake water is very cold. The air temperature at the beach had to be at least 10 degrees cooler than the campground, probably the result of the water temperature. Very...
