Aug 1, 2012 - Day Two and counting
They were off and riding early this morning. Well - not as early as planned. One party lingered too long at home, and the start time was 45 minutes delayed. I won't mention any names, but it wasn't the Butler boys! The first official (and only) stop of the day was in Loretto, Kentucky. If you are good friends with Franklin, you already know where this portion if the story is headed. That's right - the Makers Mark Distillery! They did the" tourist thing," and they took the tour (I really think Franklin just wanted the samples!). He now owns...

Jun 24, 2012 - COLUMBUS, IN
The middle of June we went to a rally with our RVing group in Columbus, IN. Columbus is a very interesting city. Known for its beautiful modernist architecture. Several very famous architects have buildings in Columbus, including the architect that designed the St. Louis arch. Also Columbus has the Cummins diesel engine factory. Needless to say Jim was very excited about taking the factory tour. We have a Cummins engine in our RV. It was a wonderful tour. Also to the west of Columbus was Nashville, IN. It’s a fun little town with lots of...

Oct 18, 2011 - Columbus - An Architectural Find
The nearby city of Columbus was quite an unexpected and fun discovery. It’s located approximately forty miles south of Indianapolis, on the east fork of the White River and is the state’s 20th largest city; and approximately eleven miles south of Camp Atterbury. But what sets it apart from many other Indiana cities is that it is currently ranked 11th in the U.S. for safest cities per population. “National Geographic Traveler” ranked Columbus 11th on its historic destinations worldwide in 2008, describing the city as “authentic, unique,...

Apr 20, 2011 - making progress
The decision to wait for the exciting weather to pass by seems to have paid off. We drove through scattered showers and the thermometer kept dropping, but the drive was uneventful. Just the way we like it! Only some of the temperature change can be blamed on the fact that we are headed north. The front that brought all that rain was a cold one and certainly must have dropped a load of water around here. As we drove past the flat, flooded fields, it felt like we were back in the bayous of Louisiana. Our campground has a nature trail that can...

Jun 18, 2010 - Friday, Columbus, IN
Left Crossville, TN this morning about 8. We had some rain early this morning (6ish) so expected to travel in rain today but it ended up a very nice day although it got hot (95ish) as we got into IN. No travel problems getting to Columbus for the night, about a 255 mile day mostly on I-65. Staying at Woods-N-Water Campground for $30 a night with GS discount. Nice, very shaded, campground......a good o/n stop. It was kinda sad to leave Crossville, especially knowing Betty McLeish's health situation, but he's determined to see us this fall...

Jul 20, 2009 - Columbus, Indiana
Another day of making miles. Trip to Columbus, Indiana, uneventful. We have had beautiful weather since we left Omaha. We didn't take pictures of Indiana corn fields, but if you look back at Iowa or Illinois pictures of corn, you can see what we have been seeing today. Nice campground with a little pond. Tomorrow is out last night on the road.

Jun 30, 2009 - The Road to Kentucky
Left today for Lexington, Ky and the Ky Horse farm. There is not much to report, except the toll roads in Ill are terrible! One has to wonder where the toll money is spent, cause these were some of the worst roads we have encountered. I am sure that I will have to have the front end of the RV aligned when I get home. I wonder if I can send the state of Ill the bill??? I doubt it! We drove to Columbus, Indiana and stayed at a nice park that was located off the road. It was fine for an overnight stop, but neither Susan nor I are impressed...

Apr 19, 2009 - Heavy rain, lousy roads and too much traffic
We just arrived at the Woods-N-Waters Kampground near Columbus, Indiana...our 4th straight ex-KOA. I think I am beginning to see a theme here, and we are glad that we didn't renew our KOA membership. The weather has been perfectly awful all day. We packed our stuff and traveled all 118 miles to our current location in torrential downpours, over miles of damaged pavement on I-65 in Kentucky (better in Indiana), and through very heavy traffic in the Louisville area. This camp isn't bad for a couple of nights and we will be back on the road...

Apr 18, 2009 - Home in Sanford, Michigan
We arrived home in Sanford, Michigan today. We were met by our close friends, Jean and Bing Hunt. It's nice to be back home and we were lucky to arrive in warm, sunny weather. Now that we're home, I'll tell you a little about our area. We moved here in September 2006 after full timing for about two years. Prior to that we lived in California for about 40+ years. Our home is right on Sanford Lake and we have wonderful views all of the time. However, since it can be cold here, we usually try to spend the winter months in a warmer...

Apr 16, 2009 - Columbus and Nashville, Indiana (What, another Nashville?!)
We stopped for one day in Columbus, Indiana and were surprised to learn that it is ranked 6th in the nation for architectural innovation and design. In this small city, there are more than 70 buildings and pieces of art by famous architects and artists, including I.M. Pei, Eliel Saarinen, Eero Saarinen, Richard Meier, Harry Weese, Dale Chihuly and Henry Moore. Columbus is the site of the global headquarters for Cummins Inc, a manufacturer of diesel engines. We were interested in this since the boat we owned in California and our current...

Oct 20, 2008 - Columbus, Indiana
On our first day, we pretty much drove non-stop and stopped outside of Indianapolis. We didn’t get away till almost noon and we didn’t want to drive after dark. There didn’t seem to be too much to take in the region, the Lonely Planet told us its nicknamed ‘Nap town’. Apparently, the Indy 500 Museum is a notable exception, but we gave it a pass this time. I checked the ‘Around Indy’ section of the guidebook and read about an unusual city just forty miles south of Indianapolis on the I-65. The tiny city of Columbus, Indiana ranks as the...
