Sep 13, 2017 - Indiana Dunes

Whenever we are in the area we make it a point to spend a few days at our favorite state park. I foolishly had reserved site 2, which turned out to be in a bad spot for satellite. It was only after I had set up that I decided to move to site 3. Fortunately we were able to do that. Unfortunately that doubled the work. The Dunes is an electric-only park. So, we have no water, sewer, or wifi. We love the Indiana Dunes for its beach and its trails and usually are very active while we are here. That didn’t happen this year because of Sue’s...

Oct 8, 2014 - Indiana Dunes

On Monday we drove the See Ya across the Borman Expressway to Indiana Dunes State Park. After ten year on the road, the Dunes still remains one of our favorite spots. Yesterday Jim and Sylvia Spivey came over for a visit, walk to the beach and dinner at the Sunrise Café in nearby Chesterton. Jim is another one of the “Baseball Boys” and we always have a great time visiting with him and Sylvia. Today Annie and I went on one of my all time favorite hikes on trails 9 and 10 in the park. The hike samples the varied ecology of the park as it...

May 8, 2013 - Dune Climbing and the Spiveys

Today was another exceptionally beautiful day at the Dunes. Annie and I started it off with some dune climbing as we hiked trail 8 to the beach and then followed the beach to the main beach and the trail back to the campground. Like 9 and 10, trail 8 is picked up at the Nature Center. It involves three dune climbs to Mount Jackson, Mount Holden and Mount Tom. Each ascent provides a view of the lake and the forest, but Mount Tom provides the most panoramic view. When we reached the beach Annie had a brief opportunity to romp and swim before...

May 7, 2013 - Terrific Hike

I have hiked many trails over our years on the road. A hike here at Indiana Dunes ranks as my favorite one. Any hike is dependent on good weather and today’s weather was spectacular. Sunny, clear, calm and temperatures in the mid 60s greeted Annie and I as we set out through the campground to the Nature Center where trails 9 and 10 begin. I have done this hike with four of our dogs over the past forty years. Each of them has enjoyed the walk and Annie was no exception. We started out on trail 9 and followed it along its sunny surface as it...

We were able to make a casual move (left at 1:30) from Martins to the Indiana Dunes. We have arrived and are comfortably set up in site 2. The weather is beautiful and the three of us have already enjoyed a short hike from the campground to the beach and along the shore. Annie was able to briefly run free and had a great time.

We left the fairgrounds on Monday morning and headed west on the Ohio and Indiana Turnpikes to Indiana Dunes State Park. Always one of our favorite spots, the only drawback is that the campsites have no water or sewer. We camped on Monday night and headed to Midway Airport on Tuesday morning to pick up Jeff and his girlfriend, Danielle. We did a quick tour of the lakeshore and the DePaul campus before heading back to the dunes. Later in the day we took a hike through the woods and up to the top of one of the dune blowouts. Moving across the...

Good news! Our leveling jacks have been repaired. Our extended warranty company would only cover part of the cost, but the guys at Elkhart Repair and Collision did a great job. There quick work enabled us to get to the Dunes on Tuesday for a three-night stay. Indiana Dunes State Park continues to be one of our favorite spots in North America. Arnie and I walked out trail 9 and back on trail 10. This hike, one of my favorites, runs through the quiet woods, over a dune to the beach for a half-mile beach walk, then back over the dune into the...

(click on photo for larger imager) May 18 & 19 Indiana Dunes State Park Chesterton, IN We drove through rain most of the day to arrive in Chesterton, Indiana. This is a great park on Lake Michigan with nice trails along the sand dunes. We awoke to bright sunshine on Wednesday and decided to stay another night so we could hike during the day. We found a 5.5 mile hike partly through the woods and partly on the beach. We felt like we had the whole beach to ourselves as we never met anyone else. It reminded me of walking on Duxbury Beach as a...

May 13, 2008 - Chesterton, Indiana

Because of our late start from Mentor we only went as far as Chesterton Indiana today. We were on the road about 5.5 hours and found a state campground called Indiana Dunes State Park. It is right on Lake Michigan. We were looking forward to setting up and having our first celebratory drink to acknowledge our first night in the camper. We got out and started to move the camper slideout … and nothing. One of the slideouts worked fine and the other one would not work. We had visions of not being able to move this slideout for the remaining 6...

Yesterday, we drove to Chicago to see Maggie Flanagan, one of Krista's close friends from their days working together at "the old Bedford". Maggie had warned us about the potential traffic/parking problems because of the Chicago Marathon. We had checked the marathon route and its relation to Maggie's address. So we were surprised when we saw (from the freeway) marathoners walking in the early parts of the route. Later, we heard the terrible news that a participant had died in the record heat/humidity. The parking in downtown Chicago worked...
