Aug 15, 2017 - Whittington IL – Rend Lake -Gun Creek Recreation Area COE Campground

Well, who’d have thought there would be a huge, beautiful lake in southern Illinois, but there is! I picked this campground just because it was Corps of Engineers and it was on our route East. What I got was a campsite on a lake with great views of the water and an enjoyable place to spend a couple of days. I doubt if we’ll ever come this way again, but if we do, we’ll definitely stop here. There really isn’t much to do, but it’s relaxing and peaceful.

Retired at Last!

Oct 1, 2016 - Whittington, IL

We got ready to leave the windshield repair parking lot this morning, and not only was it still pouring rain (for the 4th straight day), but the ABS light came on the dash, and then our SiriusXM radio decided to stop working. Okay, so it was going to be another one of those days. The ABS light went back out after Bill cut the engine – then restarted it (still a bit unsettling, though). The radio had to wait a few hours, because we got on the road well before their office hours, and Bill needed his master navigator (yuck, yuck, that’s me!)...

Oct 9, 2015 - Still in Illinois but farther South

Yesterday was a long day and although it was fun it was tiring. We didn't get settled down until 11:00. Normally we start getting up around 6:30 or 7:00 and try to get on the road by 9:00. We were wore out from yesterday that we were all still in bed at 8:00. We skipped breakfast and got started with plans to pick up breakfast when we refuel. As we were headed towards I57 we saw a truck stop and a McDonalds together. So we decided to stop and grab a quick breakfast. We walked into McDonalds and even though it was after 10:30 we was going to...

Jul 4, 2015 - Spent the night in Whittington Woods RV

Spent the night in the most beautiful park ever. We should have taken a pic but who's thinking about that now? are sights and mind are focused on getting home. The Whittington Woods RV is just off Hwy 59 in Whittington, Il. Large spacious sites nestled among large shade trees, perfectly graveled sites and road, a swimming pool, plenty of space for tow vehicles and boats, with a large lake nearby. What more could you ask for? The owner was lacking in the personality department. Seemed irritated and not very friendly but it has not affected...

Jun 8, 2015 - Into Illinois

Last night, we had a spectacular show courtesy of Mother Nature. We had some rain but most impressive was the lightning show that was virtually constant. It must have been at a very high altitude because all we could hear was a low rumbling. We found it interesting that you could look off to the right and see stars. We must have been under another cell. Today was a full day. We tried to make it as far as Bowling Green, KY. But I-70 was closed (we guess due to storm damage). My new high-tech wiz-bang GPS picked up the closure and gave us a...

May 23, 2014 - Whittington May 23, 2014

This is what it is all about, just get up when we feel like and not rush to get on the road. We had breakfast, some coffee and then decided when we would leave. I did get everything unhooked for our departure and did leave at 10:00 am. We drove the back roads to our next stop and saw 3 deer standing alongside the road looking at us. The drive is nice on the side roads watching the farmers in the field planting this year’s crop of corn and whatever. We did stop in Vandalia IL. so Candy could get some Kettle Corn. The guy that was selling it...

2014 Memphis Trip 2

Sep 25, 2013 - Whittington, Illinois

Two more travel days and we've parked in Whittington, Illinois for the night. It's another beautiful campground--very quiet and not very busy this time of the year. Most parks close mid-Oct in the northeast. Interesting wood carvings throughout the park and live chickens running around. Our travels the last two days have been in Ohio, Indiana and now Illinois. We re-entered central time zone today and tomorrow we'll be in Missouri. Still on schedule for Branson on Friday. Ready for a break from travel and visits with good friends.

Oct 22, 2012 - Crossing the Big Muddy – Again

Today’s travel was almost entirely along the interstates in an attempt to make up time and distance. This is the headlong rush home from this point on as I have some commitments next week and we need to vote the following week. Speaking of that, on the trip up I44, Romney appears to have won the billboard race, 3-0 with one vote for Ron Paul. My prediction is that Missouri goes Romney/Ryan. We took one little diversion from I44 to Route 66 in an attempt to visit the Devil’s Elbow Bridge across the Big Piney River. It’s located on Teardrop...

Jul 22, 2012 - Traveled to Whittington, IL

We are in a good camp ground called Whittington Woods for our traveling stop as we travel toward Memphis. It is just a little north of Whittington, IL, a small town and about 100 miles from the Kentucky border. There is a very nice swimming pool and with the temperature at 101F yesterday a swim was a welcome relief. It is predicted to be 99F today. The heartland is hot, hot, hot. Regards, Carol and Steve PS: we were driving around the area and discovered a Corp of Engineers campground. The Gun Creek campground sits on Rend Lake and some of...

Jul 9, 2012 - And we rolled on !

Nice ride up from Smyrna, Tn. Was going to stop in Puducah, Ky but plans got changed, so came on a little further so that the next day will be less to drive. This is a very nice, and clean park. Went to a small local resturant called "The Zone"...had really good food ! Happy day today as I found the cord to my camera and now will be able to take pictures and download them to my computer. The country we have ridden through is very beautiful. Tennessee and Kentucky have such glorious hills and mountains, and so far in Illinois we have seen...

Meandering McCoys

Mar 17, 2012 - Day 8 Travel Day

Well, we left Kelderman this morning and are working our way back home. We went through St Louis, saw the big arch...first time ever seeing this. The drive was good, not to much traffic. The air ride is a drastic improvement on the ride quality. I am hoping that the increased softness and better ride will be better on not only the passengers but the equipment, both truck and trailer not having to take a pounding. Also, I know do not have any type of roll with the truck when you go around curves due to the dramatic increase in the size of...
