Mar 19, 2015 - It's a Wrap

We're home again, having followed rts. 50, 130, 33, and I57. The snow is gone! (I'm closing my ears to the weather forecast.) Our goal was different this trip; we spent multiple days at several locations, notably Phoenix and Corpus Christi. Still, we logged about 5,400 miles including sightseeing. It was interesting to have a taste of being away for the winter, but it will also be good to see Chase, who had become concerned "vacation" was a permanent state!

Sep 11, 2014 - Illinois Beach State Park, Waukegan, Illinois

We chose the Illinois Beach State Park because of its proximity to both Milwaukee and Chicago, the Metro, and three ballparks (Wrigley, US Cellular, and Miller.) It's more expensive than our normal selections ($25) but we saved a lot on campsites in the previous weeks, so we can afford it. It's located right on Lake Michigan and is relatively deserted, contrary to what we were told upon checkin. I will never understand why we are told that almost everything is reserved except only a few camp spots, and then the park remains deserted for the...

Aug 31, 2014 - It's a Wrap

There were thunderstorms overnight. Not having far to go, we made a leisurely start; it was cloudy, wet, and about 74 degrees. Once more, we got on 90 west and soon returned to Central Time. There's currently a small but tricky detour to get onto the tollway, but Joe got it right. There's always something going on. At a toll plaza (are they alll under repair?) an ABF double bottom blocked every semi and tow vehicle/trailer combination from leaving. Things really got stacked up and Joe was in the process of calling old acquaintances at the...

May 4, 2012 - More thoughts on the Philippines

We've been back from the Philippines four days now. We slept thru the entire night for the first time since our return. When travelers talk about jet lag they are not kidding. We've been exhausted, grumpy, short-sighted and ungrateful. It was a good reminder of how important good rest is and how we can choose to either give into our flesh (which we did) or depend on God for our sustenance. I don't know the secret of successfully traveling long distances, but I refuse to allow the last 4 days to cloud our amazing experience in the...

Apr 16, 2012 - Learns from our two week maiden voyage

We are back in Illinois for two days until we leave for the Philippines. I've included pictures of my brother, Michael, and his family. I will not be updating our trip journal until we return the first week of May. Please keep us in your prayers. Things we have learned so far: Music - we have so much music I have never listened to. Charles put all our CD's on our phones so we can rock out as we drive. Key chain - a bracelet key chain is a must when you're camping (no purses, no pockets) Laundry Detergent - Purex makes a laundry sheet...

Sep 22, 2006 - Back to Illinois Beach

We left Indiana Dunes and had a lovely drive to Illinois Beach until I tried to shut down the computer. I usually put it in hibernate, shut the lid, pack it in the bag, and then plug it in once we have the electricity going in the Airstream. So, I did my usual, but when I started to plug it in after unhitching, I noticed that something had gone wrong. The laptop was VERY hot and the LCD screen still showed "preparing to hibernate." I couldn't turn it off any other way, so I did a hard shut down and waited to reboot. When I rebooted, the...

Aug 14, 2006 - Revenge on the flies!

After DCI, we drove back to Illinois Beach since Jeff had some appointments at the VA facility there. We decided to adopt a new member to our family - Here is our new screen tent! The flies were really getting to us and unless we literally bathed in OFF, they would descend en masse. The screen tent was a wonderful addition to our home! Madison likes it except for the fact that she can't retrieve very far inside it. Once while Jeff was sitting in it, a buck deer came running very close to our camp. Madison flattened herself against the...

Jul 17, 2006 - Beach Bums

We returned to Illinois Beach from Chain O' Lakes SP - this time to stay for two whole weeks - the longest we've ever stayed in one spot so far. We really like this park. We have a lovely shady spot and even though we have to keep our fresh water tank filled, we're right across the street from the water so it's easy to do. We are constantly amazed at the size of the waves on Lake Michigan. A storm was coming through and the surf was as big as the Gulf coast on a good day. I promised myself that I would get up early one day and see the...

Apr 27, 2005 - Bound for the Windy City

After 14 weeks of preparation Milano Myst our new "old" 1997 Beneteau 461 is ready to take us on our NASA. There is a lengthy file that details all that was done to ready her for this trip. We will post somewhere at a later time. The end result, as documented by our boat surveyor, Roy Newberry, is that we have taken a below average boat and moved her to "Bristol" condition and a superbly founded, excellent sailing vessel. As we write this entry Milano Myst is laying in Lake Michigan in Waukegan Harbour. We note that water temperature today...
