Jul 8, 2017 - La Salle/Peru KOA in Utica, Illinois

Today was a travel day. We traveled southeast across Iowa through more farm country with mile after mile of corn and soybean fields and a few wind farms. We took Hwy 69 south to Garner and then headed east on US-18, US-218 and I-380 past Charles City, Waterloo and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. East of I-35, it is all divided highway. There are a few traffic lights in Waterloo, but that’s it. Traffic was light. We took I-380 as far as I-80 and then continued east on I-80. We took I-280 out around Davenport, Iowa, and across the Mississippi River into...

Our 2017 Travels

Aug 2, 2015 - North Utica, IL

The plan was to head away from Madison, but still be close enough that most of the people departing the Rally would be traveling further. It seemed like 140 miles would be about right. That way we'd have a quiet campground pretty much to ourselves. We picked out Hickory Hollow Campground in North Utica, IL. To our surprise, as we pulled into the entrance driveway, we found that quite a few other people had the same idea. The campground was busy, but they had room for us all. Of course the first order of business once we were set in place...

2015-2016

May 9, 2015 - It all started 425 million years ago . . .

On Wednesday we moved about 110 miles west to Utica, IL. We are at the Hickory Hollow Campground (a Passport park) for at least two nights. On Thursday we explored the Starved Rock State Park. SRSP has been voted the most popular attraction in Illinois. Around 425 million years ago this area was a huge inland sea. Over thousands of years, the Illinois River and its tributaries eroded the sandstone in the area to create 18 canyons within the four mile long Park. There are many resulting waterfalls and 13 miles of hiking trails. We did about...

Sep 12, 2014 - Utica, IL - Starved Rock State Park

Our trip from Loves Park to Utica, IL was 85 miles of mostly Interstate 39. It was misting most of the way but that was much better than the storm that passed through the night before we left! Utica is a very small town just across the Illinois River from Starved Rock State Park, where we are staying. Just like Rock Cut State Park, we only have 50 amp electricity with no water but a good dump on the way out of the park. The sites are very large and well kept, though ours is a little under water from the storm the night before we arrived....

Aug 26, 2013 - OTRA - IL - Utica

Easy drive again today along Route 30. We travel the regular roads interspersed with interstates because you go through small towns and get to see more scenery. There are many times when I wish we had a smaller RV so we could stop in some of these towns and take a walk-about but right now, the Midwest is in the middle of a heat wave with temps in the 90’s so we wouldn’t be doing much walking around anyway. We stopped at the Walmart in Valparaiso to get some cash before we hit the toll part of I-80 around Chicago and, since we did no...

Sep 22, 2012 - OTRA - IL - Utica

It was a little windy on our trip from Buffalo, IA to Utica, IL so I was a bit tired when we got into camp today. Along the way, we passed a llama farm with beautiful llalmas in the pastures, a huge ethanol plant, lots of corn and soybean fields (of course), and Chicago. Driving I-80 through Chicago is no big deal...as long as you don't hit it during rush hour! Other than the wind, it was an easy drive to the Hickory Hollow Campground which is a very nice, clean campground with long level pull thru spaces. We got set up and then went into...

Aug 7, 2012 - We just keep rolling.

SUNDAY: Hello to all. We've been at Sara's house for the last 2 weeks only coming back to the MH to sleep - so therefore no computer except for my Kindle. It cuts down on the amount of blogging, emailing and posting to FB I do as my fingers don't do well on the little squares on the Kindle. We went over to Sara's about noon and took a shower. Then watched the History Channel on how the states got their shapes. Really neat history of our country. Some of the reasons were geographic, or religious or political. Helped feed the puppies their...

Summer 2012 Travels

Jul 19, 2012 - We're traveling south and stopped at Utica, IL

Uticia, IL is a very small town that sits on the Illinois River. Just south of the town and on the river is Starved Rock State Park, one of Illinois' largest state parks. The parks name came from a legend telling of a band of Iliniwek Indians that was under attack by rival Ottaw-Potawatomis, starving here in the 1760s atop the 125 foot sandstone bluff over looking what is now called the Illinois River. They have a campground but it was filled and as we were staying for a traveling layover we would not have stayed there. The park was filled...

Jun 17, 2012 - Homeward bound

Saturday morning we visited the Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota. Every year the folks there decorate their local arena completely with corn. Every side on the ouside is covered with murals entirely done with corn cobs and straw. On the inside there are more murals depicting many different scenes. The picture shown is from the "Mount Rushmore" monument. Every year they tear everything down and start fresh with a new theme. After this visit we continued our way East and drove into Iowa, past Sioux Falls, Sioux Center and stayed over in...

Oct 10, 2011 - Illinois waterway Lock and Dam

Oct 10 We drove completely across Indiana today but made one stop at the Illinois Waterway and the Starved Rock Lock and Dam. I really like locks. There was one pusher tug with 3 barges in the lock when we arrived. One of the deck hands was sitting on the side of the barge and we got a chance to talk to him. He lives in Mississippi and has been on the barge since Louisiana. When the lock was full he pushed the barges part way out then unhooked from the two on the side, moved the tug to the end with one of the barges, hooded then together...
