We were all saddled up and on the road by 9:40 Wednesday morning as we pointed the house up I-55 then onto I-39, then after short stints on I-90 and then U.S. 20 we pulled into the Chicago NW KOA in Union, Illinois to use as a base for visiting Kyle and Sara for a couple days. The drive, aided by the ever-elusive tailwind at times, was just shy of 6 hours which gave us just enough time to get all set up before the rain...mostly. We are in Site 113, which is the site that our UK friends Rick and Mandy were in when we first met them here last...

The drive from Carlock to Union was an uneventful 2½ hours up I-39, then some state highways through a couple small towns till we got to the Chicago NW KOA. It’s billed as the closest campground to Chicago, but we know of a very nice county park that is about 15 minutes closer. The problem with that one is it doesn’t have sewer connections or Wi-Fi so that doesn’t work so well for us. Besides, when you’re driving over an hour to get to Evanston where Kyle lives, 15 more minutes ain’t much. We got all set up by about 1:00 but decided to do a...

If you thought yesterday’s update was weak, just wait. We did dang near nothing today. Walked the dog a few times, ate, I did a little RV repair thingy, we watched TV, I went to the store, Michele exercised, I napped and we talked on the phone a couple times and that was about it. It was kind of crappy today with off and on rain so we lacked significant motivation to do anything. At least we met that goal. Tomorrow I think we are heading toward Milwaukee WI to set up for a couple days. Depending on our motivation, or lack thereof, of course.

We don’t have much to report today so I will keep this update short. We ate lunch at Buffalo Wild Wings (only fair), bought a new USB cord at Office Max (was more expensive than it should be), bought some dog treats (he’s worth it), got a haircut (I was due), came home and sat around the campfire for a couple hours, took showers and went to bed. There were some other trivial tasks that we did that don’t deserve documentation, so there will be none.

Today started out pretty slow – and cold. It probably got down to the mid-30’s overnight and they said there was the possibility of frost, but when you don’t open the door until after 9:00 the chance of seeing any frost is nil. We had some phone calls and emails to take care of so we didn’t get out of here until 11:30. We decided that since it was a beautifully sunny day we would head into Chicago and go to the Field Museum of Natural History, then head a couple miles south to U.S. Cellular Field to watch the White Sox play the Marlins. We...

The weather dudes were wrong. It was wet and windy, but they forgot to add foggy to their forecast. When we got up we couldn’t see too far past the office but by the time we pulled onto the highway it was better…not much, but at least to the point that we could see without hitting anybody. When I got up it was 57°; when we stopped for gas over an hour down the road in Indiana it was 47° and they are forecasting 34° in the morning here NW of Chicago, but I don’t think it’ll get down quite that low – but it might; it’s just before 10:00 and...

Monday, September 1, 2008 This day was Labor Day. Where did the summer go? We went to the Gerald R. Ford Museum, Grand Haven Lighthouse, Holland Harbor Lighthouse, and browsed in some great antique shops while staying in Shelbeyville/Hopkins, Michigan. We also got our haircuts, which felt really good. While Rick was disconnecting the utilities I took pictures of the great sights we had been looking at from our motorhome. Rick went to the office and returned the electrical cord extension. At 10:12 am we sadly left the Hidden Ridge RV...

We stopped the Chicago Northwest KOA Campground in Union, IL for three nights so that we could see Eileen, S&S's daughter, and also visit Kathy's Aunt Betty. On Sunday, after fighting traffic for 2 hours on I-90, Eileen gave us a tour of the grand West Moreland Country Club -- build in 1911 --,located in Skokie,IL. Eileen is a swimming instructor. More tornado warnings and severe thunderstorms !!!! On Monday, we took a architectural boat tour, which was enjoyed by all. Then, we...
