May 31, 2012 - Thomson Causeway COE Park

Tuesday, May 29, 2012 – When we left Doris’ we travel “the Great River Road” along the Mississippi River. The paved bicycle trail could be seen for miles along this road – probably all the way but since we are not going all the way I can’t say. We traveled to Thomson Causeway COE Campground near Thomson, IL. This is the nicest COE campground that we have visited with very clean bathrooms and showers. Near here is Lock and Dam 13 which is 522 miles above the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. One of the things that pass through...

2012 travel

Jun 27, 2010 - Thomson Causeway

It is so peaceful here. There are not many campers this weekend so we have a great view of the river. We can go out to the river's edge and listen to the waves lap up on the rocks. Or we can sit in our campsite and hear the breeze in the oaks and maples near us. At night the frogs and the crickets lull us to sleep. The Turtle People: “From late May until early July, you will see Dr. Fred Janzen and his research team staying in the campground while they conduct turtle nesting research in the marsh. Dr. Janzen, from Iowa State University, has...

Summer 2010 Travels

Jun 25, 2010 - The Great River Road

It seemed to take forever for us to pack up and hit the road today. Lots of hugs good-bye and then double check that we hadn't forgotten to do something. I also had to do some paper work and bill paying for Eden Park before I shut up the rig. So that is done. We left Winona, MN, on Hwy 61 and headed south. Crossed over into WI at LaCrosse and followed the Great River Road. It was pretty but you know how much I love hills - so it was not my idea of a great trip. Not sure I liked riding on the side of a bluff with a railroad track and a big...

Summer 2010 Travels

Jul 30, 2009 - Xings

A day of crossings brings us to the dividing line between East and West - Thursday, July 30 Today we left our campground in Crawfordsville, Indiana and 305 miles later we arrived at the east bank of the Mississippi River. The Mississippi is a psychological, as well as the physical dividing line between east and west, and it’s good to stand at it’s shores again. To get here we crossed, in chronological order, the following landmarks: the Wabash River, the Indiana/Illinois State Line the line that separates the Eastern Daylight Time Zone from...

2009 Spring 2 Fall

Jun 28, 2007 - For a Moment...........

Still from Thomson Causeway Campground, on the outskirts of the town of Thomson in the NW corner of Illinois. We made it through the night with no more storms. The lower temps & humidity readings did arrive though, making for a very pleasant day today. I believe that I heard on the radio that the temps were somewhere in the high 70's - low 80's, & the humidity must have been in the bottom half of the 0 - 100 range. This weather is supposed to continue for another day & then begin to get back to more seasonal weather for the weekend. I ate...

We're Wingin' It

Jun 27, 2007 - Landed in Thomson

From Thomson Causeway Campground, on the outskirts of the town of Thomson in the NW corner of Illinois. Monday turned-out to be a longggg day, probably in retrospect too long of our own making, & Tuesday was a day to recover & settle into our new location. We had identified this campground as our next home, the only question was whether we could/would arrive here in one day, given the distance & other delays that we would encounter along the way. Our pantry had gotten almost void of several key items. The nearest full-range grocery store...
