Jul 23, 2011 - Day 29-Fourth Full Day in Nauvoo

Today was kind of an extra day, although we weren’t sure of that when we made up the schedule. We found that three full days here would allow us to see everything that we wanted to see. The nice thing is, that with the extra day, we are able to repeat some of our favorite things, run some errands, do laundry and theoretically relax in the cool of our motorhome. I went out a little after 6:00 a.m. and reserved our seats for the Pageant this evening. From there, I went over to the Visitor’s Center to get tickets to see Sunset by the...

Jul 21, 2011 - Day 26-Day One at Nauvoo

We had quite a day in Nauvoo today. We went into the Visitor’s Center early and got tickets for the Wagon Ride for 11:00 a.m. We got tickets for a production in one of the Visitor’s Center theaters called, “High Hopes and River Boats” We also reserved our tickets for “Rendezvous in Old Nauvoo”for Thursday but couldn’t pick them up until Thursday morning. We then went over and put our reservation tags on a couple of chairs for the pageant. It is an interesting process for reservations. You just put a coat or sweatshirt or piece of tape or a...

Jul 21, 2011 - Day 27-Second Full Day in Nauvoo

I went over early (a little before 7:00 a.m.) and got in line for the carriage and wagon tickets. The carriage is a large carriage type horse-drawn wagon that goes throughout the outskirts of Nauvoo while a guide gives a lot of really interesting history of the area as you travel past and through some of the historical sites outside of the central area of Nauvoo. That ride takes about an hour. The wagon is a slightly different type of horse-drawn wagon that takes you through the central portion of old Nauvoo and lets you get a preview of...

Jul 21, 2011 - Day 28-Third Full Day in Nauvoo (and Carthage).

This morning, we headed to Carthage after I picked up our reserved tickets for “Rendezvous in Old Nauvoo”.. We trusted the direction assignment to “Clementine”, our GPS unit in the Vibe. Apparently, she had a different understanding of where we wanted to go then we intended. We ended up in Carthage alright…right in the driveway of a nice farm way out in the country. We tried new directions which got us to the highway that went to Carthage but couldn’t find any directions to the jail site. We finally found our own way through town to the...

Jul 19, 2011 - Day 25-Fox Ridge State Park to Camp Nauvoo

We left Fox Ridge State Park this morning en route to Camp Nauvoo Campground in Nauvoo, Illinois. The trip was largely uneventful except for the weather and the roads. The weather ranged from overcast to heavy rain. The rain was sudden and short, lasting only for a 1/2 mile or so. One time we entered a freeway overpass dry and exited out the other side to a torrential downpour. Then that downpour was over in ten minutes, or so. And, I can't say that I am impressed with the maintenance of the majority of the Illinois highways. The trip was...
