Oct 5, 2014 - Louisville for a few days

We got to Louisville after our little breakdown and just relaxed for a few days. It was very warm the first day or two, like well into the 90's and muggy. Then it cooled down into the 60's and rained. Weather is very funny in the Midwest. You never know what you will get. Since it was raining on Friday, we decided to go see a movie. I had read "Gone Girl" and liked the book. I saw that the movie was premiering that day and asked Bill if he wanted to see a good thriller. We found a nice 9 screen cinema in Shepherdsville and caught the 4pm...

Oct 1, 2014 - Well, It Finally Happened

After traveling over 5,000 miles since late July it finally happened.........we broke down. Most RVers have had something happen to them sometime along the road if they travel long enough. Whether it's a tire blow out, a radiator that blows up, or any number of "malfunctions", we all share our stories when we get together after somebody shows up late to an outing because of it or doesn't make it at all. We had left Hannibal, Missouri yesterday morning and stopped to fill up with fuel somewhere outside of St. Louis. Our plan was to head...

Jun 14, 2012 - Home with the Mascoutah Hickmans

Fourteen months later, we again find ourselves parked in my brother Bill's driveway. Bill works as a civilian contractor at Scott AFB, Illinois. Scott is located east of St. Louis and was where he retired from the Air Force. I don't think his job changed when he retired. I think he put on a different uniform and reported in. Unlike last year, we have had to deal with the heat. We can't run our AC or all the fuses will blow in Bill's home. We spent a lot of time in the coolness of the air-conditioned basement. Boy I miss having a basement....

May 4, 2011 - Hickman Family Reunion--Spring 2011

One of many family meals shared this last week. The pictures are at Leah and Mark's home. Leah is my niece and the daughter of Bill Hickman. Leah and Mark have two daughters, Shelby and Sadie. They just added a son, Jett James. The family dog is "Judge." I think they have a thing about alliteration in the names...Girls are "s" and Boys are "j". My older brother Gene is lounging on the sofa with Shelby. He has two children, Wendy and Ira. They made a trip back to Bowling Green, Mo. and took a picture in front of the home they first lived in....

Spring Sojourn 2011

May 1, 2011 - Family Field Trip--Cahokia Mounds S.P.

Cahokia Mounds was explored on Sunday. We have been to this park several times and it still amazes me with the sheer size of the civilization. It really has a Mayan feel to it. It is much younger than the archaeological site (Old Stone Fort) we saw in Tennessee. Thousands of people lived here. This is located on the river across from St. Louis. Quite a site to see.

Spring Sojourn 2011

Oct 8, 2008 - Mascoutah, IL

Since we couldn’t find a campground close to Mascoutah, we decided to try the Army Corps of Engineers Campground at Carlyle Lake. Oh what a wonderful surprise! This campground is visually beautiful and relaxing. The sites are huge. There are some sites with full hook-ups but most have only electric with water available. Once again, A’s Golden Age Pass came in handy. We got two nights camping with electric for $16.00. We’re getting spoiled. Our thanks to Fred and Betty H who mentioned this Corps of Engineers campground to us before we left...
