Feb 1, 2017 - Marion, Illinois

We traveled another 535 miles southeast today. It was a long drive across Iowa and Missouri on I-29 through more farm country to Kansas City, where we got on I-70. We took that east to St. Louis. We could see the arch as we drove through the city. We got there at the beginning of rush-hour, but there were no slowdowns. We crossed the Mississippi River into Illinois and got on I-64 east. In Mt. Vernon, Illinois, we headed south on I-57. The part of southern Illinois that we traveled through today was a mix of farms and towns and small...

Our 2017 Travels

Apr 28, 2016 - 2 Days in Southern Illinois

On Wednesday, we awoke to rain. That made it a good day to do some laundry and clean the coach, which we did. After lunch, the skies had cleared and the sun was out, so we drove to Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge. There are several large lakes here, but we could not get close enough to the water to see any of the water fowl. We did see 7 turkeys and a couple of deer, but over all the refuge was a big disappointment. We drove through the town of Carbondale, IL which is home to Southern Illinois University. We went into the Shawnee...

2016 RV Trip

Apr 26, 2016 - Marion, Illinois

Lynd and I arrived in Marion, Illinois this afternoon around 3:30CDT. We got the coach hooked up just before a rain storm began. We are still over 400 miles south of Chicago. Hard to realize that Illionis is such a long state. We have settled in for a hopefully quiet evening listening to the rain and probably falling asleep early. Tomorrow we hope to explore the area some. If it is stormy, it may be time to do some laundry and cleaning in the coach. We will be here a couple of days. Hopefully tomorrow I will have something much more...

Our 2015 Fall Trip

Aug 16, 2015 - Day 40

We have recrossed the Mississippi River. We are back in the east. We first crossed the Mississippi on Day 4 in Minnesota. We recrossed it on Day 40 between Missouri and Illinois. That's 36 days west of the Mississippi. Our drive across Missouri was uneventful with no stress. Rather than take the Interstate to St. Louis, we drove east on Rt. 60. It was a four-lane highway the whole way. It was just as nice as the interstate but without the traffic. We crossed into Illinois just north of Cairo then drove north on I-57 for about 50 miles...

Lay of the land

Mar 18, 2015 - AR - MO - IL

Having decided not to use the time to make a pilgrimage to Coursey's in St. Joe for The Best Ham in the Country, we set our course east again, stopping at a Blue Beacon for a wash first. (For some reason, the camper looked as though it had been rained on and dragged through a couple of deserts.) I40 took us to a TA truck stop for an omelet and eggs at the Country Pride. Later it was on the I55 and into Missouri with gloomy skies, sprinkles, and 46F. We passed through the New Madrid Seismic Zone and I read to Joe about the series of four...

Aug 4, 2014 - Another Travel Day

From Marion Campground & RV Park – Marion, IL Another couple hundred miles further SOUTH today. We left Champaign later than usual but only had a little less than 190 miles planned and arrived here in Marion at 2 p.m. and that was after stopping for lunch at a Popeye’s inside a Travel America Truck stop along the way. We did encounter lots of construction today on our I-57 route but traffic was some of the lightest we have encountered lately. Again, this will be a one night stay and tomorrow we make the remainder of the trip to West...

Home Sweet RV - 2014

Jun 27, 2011 - Marion, IL

We are now in Marion, IL, at a campground with lots of trees and one tall one that leans into coaches when they try to pull into spaces. We left Viera on Sat morning about 1130. Linnea was an angel, helping me move orchids and load the coach. She came over on Fri evening to help her old parents! We made Tifton, GA, the first night and then on to Chattanooga, TN, the next. Monday, we left Chattanooga around 0710 to beat the rush hour traffic. We went a few miles and were in the Central Time Zone, so it was only 0630 or so. We stopped for...

We went to the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, KY. It was like walking into an art museum. Each quilt was so intricate, so perfect; each one's "story" so unique. One took more than 16,000 hours of work. At the Kroger grocery store they had pictures of the flood waters in their parking lot. They had a wall of sandbags to keep the water out of the store. You could only see the top few inches of pipes of the return cart racks in the parking lot.

Aug 29, 2010 - Through the mountains

We left northern Ga. around 8 am and headed toward Illinois. We went through Dalton, Ga. the rug and flooring capital of the United States. There were tons of discount places, but then you had to get it home and get it installed, but you could have fun shopping if you were in the mood for floor covering! We then drove through some very nice mountains on the way to Nashville. Was able to drive through downtown, since it was Sunday. It had a very impressive skyline. We then headed to Paducah, Ky. This is the area called the land between the...

Apr 27, 2010 - April on to 27 in Marion, IN

Moved on to another town called Marion, This one is in Indiana. We stayed at the Marion Campground after a clear day of driving in very heavy wind. For much of the trip we drove directly into the wind which dropped my mileage down to just under 11 MPG. This a small campground and appears to be mostly overnighters getting off the road for the night then back out the next morning.

Jun 23, 2008 - Amber Waves of Grain

OK, we have now arrived in Manitou Springs, CO where we plan to stay at least two nights before heading on to our ultimate Colorado destination in Meeker. Today, we decided to abandon the interstate highway and take an older US Highway on to Manitou Springs. Our drive from Oakley, KS covered 247 miles and with a change to Mountain Standard Time we arrived at noon. We traveled US 40, Colorado Hwy 96 and US 24 through Colorado Springs to our destination. If you like long straight stretches of highway bordered by grain fields, this is the trip...
