May 27, 2014 - We're getting the hang of this!!

Here's another really neat KOA up here in north Illinois! We've never done the whole interstate thing all the way north because we're usually in State Parks or COEs. Stay more than one night, too! But this has been an adventure... especially after the way it started out! ha Where we are now is out in the country just past the Illinois River to the north. It's quiet farmland with a huge grove of huge hardwoods as only this part of the country can produce! Hence the bark studies. Tonight Ki & I went for a walk all over and P and the other two...

Sep 11, 2013 - Day 4

We went to Starved Rock and Mattheisen State Parks today -- both beautiful and interesting places along the Illinois river. Glacial melt and erosion have carved canyons into the limestone that lines the river. In "normal" times, there are many waterfalls in both, but since there has not been rain for quite a while, the waterfalls are a no-show now. New England 2013

Sep 10, 2013 - Day 3

Another hot day but not quite as bad as yesterday. We decided to shorten the trip today; the heat is getting to all four of us. At least we don't have those fur coats like the cats do. Found a really nice little KOA campground with lots of shade trees, a little creek running through the park, and not within earshot of the freeway like last night! The forecast is for progressively cooler temps over the next few days so we are going to stay here one more day and explore a bit.

Sep 25, 2008 - Day 117

Day 117, Sept 25, Today’s Plan; Go to Indiana and Illinois. Another warm day greets us. We are off in good time. US-30 takes us a little north of west to within miles of Lake Michigan. The towns are coming thick and fast now. Around Merrillville, urban sprawl starts. Every mile there is a traffic light or lights. Malls line both sides of the road at times. there is no change as we pass into Illinois. There are no more farms. Eventually, we find I-80 and ramp on. The change is a relief. The congestion is not. We can at least maintain a...
