Aug 5, 2016 - Leaving Ottawa to Gilman, Illinois (92 miles)

We had a wonderful visit in Ottawa and today it was time to leave, it is always so hard. Thanks to everyone for the truly warm welcome and fun celebration of our trip!! Always wonderful to spend time with our great families and wonderful friends!! It was so tempting to stay another day and I wish we had made the decision to do so. But we really need to push on and get to Bar Harbor!! We left under gray skies and it felt cooler than the 70 degrees on the thermometer. Aug 14, 2010 - Parade in Gilman

There is very little commercialization of the event we are attending in Gilman. Some vendors sell food like hot dogs or pizza and there are some small games like minature golf or riding a bull, but for the most part the activities have a small town feel about them. It is refreshing. This afternoon we attended the parade. The first thing we did was find a very leafy street so we could park our chairs in the shade for the afternoon. Aug 13, 2010 - Town Reunion in Gilman, Illinois

Back in Illinois again, we are attending the 2010 Old Boys' & Girls' Reunion in Gilman, Illinois, 2 1/2 hours south of Chicago. It is the oldest town reunion in Illinois and was started in 1886 and held every five years thereafter. Jerry came here with his family when he was growing up to visit an aunt and uncle and their children. In a way this was like their second home and they have many memories of their visits in the summertime. Gilman has a population of 2,000 and is surrounded by rich farmland.
