May 11, 2017 - Hennepin Canal

2017-05-12. Hennepin Canal, Geneseo, IL From the middle part of Illinois to home, traffic is the operative word no matter how many different routes you take. Since we were going to stop to visit Tim and Nancy Okal in Chicago on the way home, we headed east into Illinois stopping at Geneseo for the night. The campground, Geneseo Campground, is located on the Hennepin Canal which is a 104 mile long riverway originally used to move ships around the Rock River to the Illinois River but now, simply a beautiful canal with a hike/bike path along...

Jul 25, 2014 - Friday, 7/25 Out of Iowa

Last night we stayed in Geneseo Campground in Illinois, which is outside the official boundary of the Loess Hills, but near there. Once again we had a shady site. Once again the wind was blowing in heavy gusts The office clerk told me there was a forecast of damaging thunderstorms and gave me the county name. That way I could track any warnings or announcements. Paul went to sleep early, by 9:30. I stayed up another hour. We both slept well thru the cool night. He told me that wind and rain had come thru, but that he had not heard any...

To Alaska and Back

Jun 14, 2014 - Pioneer, Oh

We left Geneseo, Il at 9:39 with a destination of Fremont, IN. We stopped east of Joliet, il at a very dirty Pilot station with lots of truck traffic. The signed advertised a price of $ 3.69. But we soon found out that our price was $ 3.99. We paid a toll in Illinois of $ 1.70 We ended getting in a real traffic jam along with construction and two accidents. We were in the wrong lane so had to divert on another freeway then back to the toll road. We spent the entire day on the Indiana toll road. That price was $ 23.70. We haven't quite...

Jun 13, 2014 - Geneseo, Illinois

We left the campground at 9:25 for Davenport, IA a distance of 318 miles. The weather was clear and very little wind. Brad did not the roads. On and off ramps were short and rough at times due to the cement. After trying for two days to contact the Passport America park we decided to forget it and go on into Illinois. We only had to go to Exit 7 and went to Geneseo Campground in that town. We crossed the Mississippi River at the border. The campground is nice but has many knats. We took a walk over to the canal which separates two...

Sep 5, 2012 - The Corn Report

According to the farm reports, corn is not doing very well this year thanks to the drought. (Beans, however, are going to do OK thanks to a recent rainfall that was too late for the corn!) It's a good thing I have a bunch of tapes to play. Sometimes the radio gets a little off base for me. Nothing much to report today, so I'll keep this short. I drove all day through Iowa and decided that when I reach Illinois, I was going to stop at the first available spot. Guess what? I turned off the highway and was staring at yet another WalMart! I...

May 10, 2012 - Craig & Sheri Weber

Left Keith and Marian's around 8:30am this morning en route to Dyersville, IA we decided we would stay at this campground known as "Geneseo Campground" because we are dear friends with the owners Craig & Sheri Weber. We know them from our national camping group known as FCRV (Family Campers and RVers). We also decided to stay there as it was a good spot to our next destination for in the morning we will be heading to see "The Field of Dreams" (with Kevin Costner) located in Dyersville, IA. This is where the movie was filmed. Debbie has...

Jun 14, 2011 - A Quick Move With The River Lapping At Our Heels!

From Geneseo Campground – Geneseo, IL That is right, the header to this post shows us at a different location and no longer at the Mississippi Park in Canton, MO. Long story short, it began raining about 8 PM last night and continued ALL NIGHT LONG…….heavy rain, lots of lightening and loud thunder claps all night. So when the sun came up this morning, we had the Mississippi River lapping at the narrow street that ran in front of the RV sites no more rocks leading to the edge of the river……those were under water. Predictions anticipated that...

Home Sweet RV - 2011

Jul 24, 2009 - Geneseo, IL

Another 300+ mile day but not a bad drive. Geneseo is a pleasant little town just over the IL/IA border from Davenport. The RV Park is on the Hennepen Canal, and has a nice path where we walked the dogs. Our first night we stayed up late…until the tornado watch was over. Fortunately we just had a thunderstorm and no really scary moments. Helen made the most of Saturday: got a haircut, baked bread and chocolate chip cookies! Heading out again Sunday still have to determine our route but probably south through Tennessee and Alabama, avoiding...

Jun 8, 2009 - Day 2

Here we are, the end of our second day. And what a day it was. Went through Kentucky and now Illinois. We still have about 20 miles left before we hit Iowa. I don't think Illinois will ever end! Even though we insist that we are not going to put in long days, we ended up doing around 500 miles. Weather has been good - just a few slight rain showers. It was good to get back to the land of good black soil! I never can understand how anything can grow in the Georgia red clay. The highlight of the day was finding a gas station that had RV...
