Jul 23, 2015 - Eastward Bound

Short post today. Most of the trip was on I55 when we found that US 61 was closed just north of Jackson, MO. Not much to see. We crossed the Mississippi River for the final time on this trip just south of St. Louis on I270 and headed north to Edwardsville, IL where we will be staying for a couple of days to visit a friend from the 87th Infantry Division Legacy Association. I won't be posting again until we start our journey east on Saturday or Sunday. Stay tuned.

Aug 27, 2012 - Mr. Pollard’s Yard

Today’s travels took us across Indiana and into Southern Illinois on US 50. We finally saw some rain as we passed through Vincennes, IN. It poured for about 20 minutes and flooded the streets, and then on the Illinois side of the Wabash River, it looked like it never rained. We drove all the way to Edwardsville, IL to stop for the night. Our travel path has crossed our route from July when we stayed in Edwardsville a couple of days to visit friends Tom and Pat. It looks like we will be in the St. Louis area at least until Saturday morning...

Jul 15, 2012 - Meeting of the Great Rivers

As we were checking into the RV park the owners told us about the three rivers merging together - so we decided that would be our sightseeing adventure. Sunday morning Fran cooked our breakfast, we ate and off we went. First stop - the visitor center in Alton. The lady was very knowledgeable and told us where to go for the best viewing of the rivers coming together. The Illinois River flows into the Mississippi River before the Missouri so we decided to start our trip there. Up Great River Road (Illinois 100) to Grafton and the place the...

Jul 14, 2012 - Travel day - Edwardsville, Illinois

Woke up to rain ..... we got showered and dressed .... still raining. We was very happy we had hooked the car and put the sewer hose up last night. Ken got soaked but at least he was able to get dry before pulling out. We pulled out of Cape Girardeau in the rain but it cleared up before we got to St Louis so we had dry roads into Edwardsville, Illinois. The roads around St Louis is BAD! They are so rough. We made it safely to our stopping place - Red Barn Rendezvous RV Park in Edwardsville, Illinois. Until the next posting ...... God Bless...

Jul 12, 2012 - A short visit with friends

We arrived at the Red Barn RV Rendezvous Park in Edwardsville yesterday and headed right to Tom and Pat’s house for a visit. After a few beers and a great dinner, we headed to the St. Louis Botanical Gardens for music. The entertainment was a local bluegrass group, the Brian Spearman Band. It was entertaining, but a little on the warm side. There was a Japanese/Chinese lantern display at the gardens, but unfortunately they are not lighted on Wednesdays. Probably the most striking exhibits were two huge dragons made out of china plates tied...

Dec 9, 2011 - Crossing the Mississippi at St. Louis

Our trip started out in Joplin, MO the city the was hit by a massive tornado in May 2011. The experience of driving through the devastated areas was sobering. It appeared to me what many areas of Europe must have looked like after WWII. Thousands of people lost their homes and many of those have not been repaired or rebuilt. There is activity, but the people of Joplin still need help from trhe rest of the US. The story has disappeared from the news, but it shouldn't disappear from the conciousness of the nation. In this Christmas season,...

Jun 13, 2011 - Edwardsville, IL Temp 83

Finally temperatures below 90 degrees. The rain last night must have cooled things off. We met another Phaeton owner from Kentucky. He blew us away when he told us that he paid $13,000 to tag his RV in Kentucky - said it was some kind of luxury tax but get this - he has to pay the luxury tax amount every year. We only pay about $80 for our tags per year. There are some advantages to living in Florida. We left at noon and stopped around 1:30 for diesel (our second fuel stop on our new RV; 1200 miles since we bought it). We needed over $300...

Jan 3, 2010 - Airline tickets bought

So the count down begins.. Over the past 3 months, I have made a variety of reservations. I have been scanning the internet looking for deals as the time approaches. I got the RV in October at a discounted rate. I reserved the rental car in August at what I think is a really good rate. Yesterday I bought the airline tickets. So far so good as it relates to the budget. I am a bit concerned about the Denali Backcountry lodge and its food. I found a few not so nice comments about it. I emailed BCL about those comments. They replied that that...
