The last time we had taken an Amtrak train, indeed any long distance train in America, had been from Washington DC to New York in the days when daughter Bryony faithfully obeyed her Dad’s instructions and Laurence was toddling all over the place. I thought that the passage of two and a half decades may have fixed the wobbles so we booked an overnight train to Chicago. ... And there was another consideration: we were running out of time with our departure from San Francisco just 9 days away and Chicago yet to be discovered. ... rainy day so some of our photos are blurry and dark, those from the tower were ok, from where we were. tomarrow at noon is the day chicago finds out if they won the bid for the olympics to be there, we don't want to be here if they win. ...

our day 15 thurs oct 1, drove back to chicago, did the sears tower then started our route 66 trip return at it's start, it was a rainy day so some of our photos are blurry and dark, those from the tower were ok, from where we were. ... tomarrow at noon is the day chicago finds out if they won the bid for the olympics to be there, we don't want to be here if they win. ...

Chicago’s name ‘the windy city’ has nothing to do with wind velocity and everything to do with how much the people talk. ... Downtown Chicago was a pleasant surprise, it was one of the most livable and entertaining downtown area of any city that we have seen. ... Chicago city is built around a river and Chicago’s history seems to be a competition as to who can build the best skyscraper. ... On this tour we learned a lot of interesting history including a lot of the gangster (Al Capone) history and that most of Chicago’s waterfront was built on landfill. ... Also interesting is the fact that they reversed the flow of the Chicago River to flow away from Lake Michigan instead of into it. ...

Sep 6, 2009 - Chicago, Chicago... That wonderful town

It was another beautiful day…We didn’t know what to do first cuz there are so many things we want to see and do but we finally settled on a train ride into Chicago… There is a commuter train that goes all along the South Shore of Lake Michigan that starts at South Bend Indiana and ten stops later you are at the Millennium Station at Randolph… That is the corner of the famous Michigan Avenue and Randolph…. ... It was well past our normal lunch time when we arrived in Chicago so the thing most on our mind was food… We walked toward Millennium park and found a nice outdoor grill called Park Grill, but the wait was 1 ½ hours… Right across the road was the little more upscale version. ... The wait there was only 15 minutes so we put our name in and I walked around taking pictures of Chicago. ...

We arrived at LaSalle Station in Chicago at 8am, stopped at McDonalds on the way to the Sears Tower and had a bit for breakfast. ... It made me weak in the knees looking straight down 103 floors! After that we took a Water Taxi down the Chicago River to Navy Pier. ... Arriving at Navy Pier we walked along the water side and could look back and view the skyline of Chicago. ... Back at the Sear Tower, across the street we had Chicago style pizza at Giordano’s. ... All in all it was a GREAT DAY in Chicago!!! ...
