Jul 10, 2018 - They are gone, we are not, we are gone...

Well, today I got to sing...to sing "on the Road again". We were so thrilled...not about the singing but the driving. Cummins worked...well I will get to that in its proper place. Big thing to know is that we will be back in Little Rock on Thursday. WooHoo… Now back to Sunday. We got up slowly and waited for Pat and Bridget to come say bye. They headed our way a little after 9:00 and we met them in the shade across from the Bus. We have spent a great deal of time with them since the 10th of June. They took off for a week and explored north...

Jun 6, 2018 - Beautiful D & W Lake

Up early this morning to get started north. Got around early this morning and ready to leave by 8:30. I had to take a few minutes to change shirts since the one I had on was soaked through. Then we were ready to leave. The generator was running and the coach A/C was running. Five miles down the road things changed. The generator had quit. We tried a couple of things and restarted the generator. Then it quit in a few minutes. We were in Illinois by that time. We called Cummins in Memphis and talked with Greg. No new ideas. Result of the...

Sep 6, 2016 - D & W Lake Camping and Fishing

Champaign, IL, has been our home for the last week, little campground called D & W Lake Camping and Fishing. Our site was just across the road from the lake and was really nice and quiet. Notice the Missus was deeeep into her book. Champaign is right next door to Urbana and home to the University of Illinois. Our campground is within 2 to 5 miles of everything in both towns with the largest mall in the mid central area less than amile and a half away; therefore, all the eating places, Walmart, and grocery store (no Hi VEE yet) are close. We...

Aug 8, 2015 - Leaving Michigan

Just want to catch you up with our plans. Yesterday, Friday, August 7, we finally left Michigan. Sure had a lot of conflicting emotions about it. I know that most likely I will not be returning to Grosse Ile. Got the picture of the lighthouse, saw my old home and really had some strong negative feelings about all of the McMansions that have been built on East River Road! I don’t know who owns those places but I guess wherever there is boat able water there will be people with bigger boats than they need and bigger houses than they can...

Feb 19, 2015 - Champaign, Illinois Walmart

Finally on the road again, Hazel and I left Minnesota on Tuesday, headed for Fredericksburg, Virginia to visit our son Tom, his wife Kira, and their new baby girl Audrey. Audrey's baptism is on Saturday the 21st. Hazel had a dental appointment in the Twin Cities on Tuesday morning, she drove down the night before in our Chevy Tracker, and I left Princeton Tuesday morning. We agreed to rendezvous at a convenient location south of Minneapolis, and the Cracker Barrel restaurant in Lakeville was perfect. But, when Hazel arrived in the Tracker,...

Aug 23, 2014 - Champaign, IL

Sat, 23 Aug: Back on the road again... After more than six weeks in storage and another five days at the nearby FMCA Campground, Carpe Diem finally got to hit the road again. It felt really good to head out of the campground and get the engine really warmed up for a change. We spent most of our five days provisioning Carpe's fridge, freezer, and pantry with stops at Wal*Mart, Costco, and Sam Club. We also got caught up with all our mail, which was a major chore. Friday (yesterday) we drove the car to Dayton to visit with Aunt Betty for a...

Aug 3, 2014 - South Is Good!

From D & W Lake Camping and RV Park – Champaign, IL Our week in Elkhart flew by. We got to go on 2 RV factory tours…….KZ and Lifestyle. Lifestyle won hands down but then that was our thought going into the tours as they are the company that took the ashes of Carriage and are building even better 5ths than Carriage did at the end. Of note, we owned a Carriage Cameo for 6 years before we got the HitchHiker that we now have. We also went to the gigantic flea market in Shipshewana and found some things we just could not live without! The rest...

Home Sweet RV - 2014

Jun 18, 2014 - Day 1 is in the books!

We got underway pretty much on time, planned to leave at 10am, and pulled out at 10:30. I think Joyce used the extra time to say goodbye to Petey, Molly and The Kid. Sometimes it's hard to understand a woman's heart, but when it comes to kids and animals, we just accept it. Phil did forget a couple of things, but we did recover. Had to make the obligatory stop at Walmart for a couple of things. WARNING: Don't trust SIRI on your Iphone. She gave us the grand tour of Crawfordsville, IN, giving directions to a Walmart that no longer exists! We...

Jun 1, 2014 - Headed Towards Champaign, IL

Finally leaving Zanesville, OH and heading towards Champaign, Illinois. The beginning of our day started just around 9:00am and was beautiful with the sun shinning and the temperature very mild. Again thinking we had the information in Grace (our GPS) correct we started our drive and Grace had us going east instead of west. Thank heaven Bob and I used some common sense and started driving west. We pulled over at the next exit and fixed our information in Grace. Is this what every morning is going to be like???? Hope not. Continuing our...

Oct 28, 2013 - So long Hoosiers and Hi to the Illini

We passed by the home of the Hoosiers (Indiana University) to camp at the home of the Illini (University of Illinois). I emailed Mary & Gene Thomas, friends who are alumni, to find out what hotspots we should take in, but they said all their old hangouts are gone. The same thing happened to us when we went back to Syracuse and couldn’t find our favorite places. I know I’ll sound really old, but the kids nowadays don’t know what they’re missing. We stayed at a great campground with very friendly owner who told us a story about his last...

Jun 16, 2013 - Two weeks in Illinois

We spent our first week in Illinois at Whittington Woods Campground in Whittington, IL near the Rend Lake recreation area, a large lake in southern Illinois. Whittington Woods is a very nice campground although completely different than our last stop in Southaven, MS. The campground was completely wooded which provided plenty of shade and made for enjoyable temperatures even when the rest of the area was rather hot and humid. There was bad weather all around us; severe thunderstorms and even tornado warnings, but fortunately it all missed...

Apr 29, 2013 - Visiting Old Haunts

We have had a quiet but nice visit to the Champaign-Urbana area. One of the highlights was a visit to Mahomet Illinois and Lincoln Trail Elementary School where Sue taught from 1968 to 1972. The principal was very cordial and we had an opportunity to visit Sue’s old classroom. (forgot pictures) Tomorrow we head for Chitown!
