May 31, 2018 - Carlock, Illinois

Our next destination is Des Moines, Iowa. We can get on the Interstate and travel two days. But, we have had enough of the Interstate. We head north to Route 116 and then west. We need to check on the corn. This is more comfortable. We travel on straight roads. We slow down through small towns. After two hours, we make our Walmart stop in Rantoul. I am pretty sure that we camped here. The last hour involves a half hour on the Interstate. It is 90 degrees out. We are happy when we pull into our campground. We are now in the Central Time...

Jul 10, 2017 - Carlock. Ill

We drove through Iowa today. Lots of corn and wheat and cattle. Were in one cornfield for 6 miles. I am grateful that we have farmers, but doubt we will be saying, "Oh my! That is so beautiful" for awhile. Illinois still had bad roads, but at least they are working on them. When we were here last all we saw were signs that Obama had erected saying he was going to fix the roads-- now there are no signs, but they are working on the bridges. Lots of wind and now thunderstorms and wind. Boy it was nice to not have rain for 5 weeks! On across...

May 25, 2014 - Memorial Day

Memorial Day, an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May, honors men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War. Memorial Day honored only those lost while fighting in the Civil War, but during World War I the United States found itself embroiled in another major conflict, and the holiday evolved to commemorate American military personnel who died in all wars. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials,...

May 21, 2014 - Hot 66

Our plan today was to follow Old Historic Route 66 from Wilmington in Winnie to Carlock, IL where we are going to spend the next 5 days. Since it was a relatively short drive, we figured we could stop at all of the Route 66 landmarks along the way. We didn’t count on temperatures getting into the upper 80’s. After all of the cold weather we’ve seen on this trip, today was a real switch and made stopping and starting really uncomfortable. We made stops in Gardner, Dwight, and Odell. Each has some unique attraction to visit. When we got to...

Jun 29, 2013 - Who'll Stop the Rain?

We started the day in the bright sunshine, but by the time we got to Indianapolis it started to rain. I don’t think it is as bad as back in Delaware, but I had to pull off the road west of Indianapolis to wait out the deluge and winds that were buffeting Winnie. Our route today was confined pretty much to the I65 and I74. Looking at the map, it didn’t appear there was a good highway that went northwest across Indiana that would get me off the Interstate. We were still able to see a few roadside attractions. In Columbus, IN there is an...

Oct 16, 2011 - Des Moines, IA to Carlock, IL

We are on the home stretch now, and I'm afraid we've seen the last of the spectacular scenery. Today was all about corn fields, corn fields, and more corn fields. So due to the lack of gorgeous photos to titillate your visual senses, I will share with you a true story of a very pathetic person. Last night Dan was looking for his pocket knife, which suddenly disappeared only a few minutes after he had been using it. After I went to bed, he commenced an exhaustive search for the missing pocket knife, which included looking under the sofa. He...

2011 Northwest Trip

Jun 21, 2010 - Carlock, Illinois

WILD ANIMAL UPDATE: This morning we saw our first black bear right next to the side of road! That’s the good news, but the bad news was, it was dead! A State Trooper kept traffic from stopping, but today’s sightings included several dozen deer, a dog, and a dozen other unidentifiables! Yesterday we washed both the motor home and the car. We jokingly told another camper that if it rains tomorrow it’s our fault. It rained cats and dogs this morning when we left at 6:30 AM. Throughout the day we went in and out of rain showers finally...

Apr 22, 2010 - Stopped for the night in Carlock, IL

We decided on driving on to Illinois and put on 443 miles, which took 8 hours. Although the campground is very nice, Interstate 74 is on one side and train tracks on the other. Can't wait to see what time the train comes through. Took a walk after dinner, it was lovely outside and robins were everywhere. Now we are lounging in our chairs, glued to the computers.

Jun 5, 2008 - Carlock IL

Left home after solving a major problem. The motor home leveling jacks would not retract. I contacted technical support at Newmar and the problem was located. It was a stuck solenoid. A gentle tap and it started working, but the same problem occurred when we extended the jacks at our campsite. I will have the replacement solenoid sent to our campground in Soap Lake WA We are at Kamp Komfort in Carlock IL. This was a Happy Camper Discount club park, in which we only paid 13 dollars for the site. The drive today was uneventful other than high...

May 20, 2008 - Off To Pennsylvania To Visit Family

We set off today to visit family in Pennsylvania before heading to Maine for the summer. We are listening to Harry Potter Audio CD's so the time really goes fast. We spent the night at Kamp Komfort RV Park & Campground in Carlock, Illinois. The campground was nothing to rave about and had a train track right next to it.

Our 2008 Travels

Jun 16, 2007 - Five States in 11 Hours

We left Pittsburgh behind the Greenleafs at 5:10 a.m. with 2 sleeping children. The weather was clear and cool and soon we were watching the sunrise in West Virginia. Boy are the hills steep! Scott and I seemed so awake. I think it was a vacation high. By early afternoon we were outside of Columbus Ohio and the roads were flattening out. The kids were separated between trucks and everyone was fairly happy. By 3 p.m. it seemed that we would never get to Peoria. The road was really flat, straight and surrounded by corn fields dotted with...
