Aug 23, 2012 - Exploring Northern Illinois

We drove up to Rockford and on the way back we went down Route 2, a very pretty drive as it went through Byron, IL and Castle Rock State Park. The wide Rock River runs through it and there is a tunnel of overlapping trees which you drive through for quite a ways. It was very pretty and scenic. We stopped by the homeplace of John Deere. The grounds had his workshop, blacksmith shop and original house where he raised 9 children. The place was closed that day but the fellow mowing the lawn (on a John Deere mower) let us into the grounds to...

Go West Trip 2012

Aug 10, 2012 - into IL

Since we didn’t get as far yesterday as we had planned, we left a little earlier this morning. Our first stop was in West Branch, IA, birthplace of Herbert Hoover and location of his presidential library and museum.. We had only planned to spend about 30 minutes there but we ended up staying about 2 hours. Even though he was born in West Branch, due to the deaths of his parents, when he was about 10, he went to Oregon to live with an uncle. He attended Stanford University and became a geologist. Sep 27, 2011 - The depths of Illinois

No pictures today, it was a day of travel. Left Springfield around 10 am headed for Byron, IL, home of Phyl's brother. It was decided the Avellas needed a down day or two and where better to spend it than with her baby brother. After entering the address in the GPS, Phyl chose the shortest distance and started on the way. Things were going well until the arrival in Peoria. Bob was driving and suddenly there was the Illinois River and a bridge to cross. He clutched the wheel, moved to the inside lane and slowly drove across the river. After...
