Sep 30, 2013 - Travel day...
Today's post covers our travel day from Winterset, Iowa to Bushnell, Illinois, approximately 240 miles. It was a beautiful day weather wise and a lovely ride as we traveled through miles & miles of soy bean and cornfields. Nearly all of our trip was on a small 2 lane road and we made more left, then right, then left again's than you can count on all of your fingers & toes combined! Good thing our GPS knows about county roads and midwest country roads in general or we might wander into a corn maze and be lost forever, lol! RV parks and...Jump to full entry
Sep 9, 2012 - Granddaughter time again
SUNDAY: We had breakfast and said good-bye and were on the road back to Stronghold at about 10:30. We went a different way – instead of taking US 30 we turned north and took US 47 to North Avenue and then west to Oregon. Just so we could see some different scenery. The corn around here looks pretty good. It is a bit brown but still has a lot of green in it. The beans look good, lush and a dark green. After we got back to Stronghold, we basically vegged. It was hot so we turned on the AC and kept cool. I packed up some of the trailer ooze...Jump to full entry
Jul 19, 2012 - Granddaughter time!!!!
SUNDAY: We went to Church with Sue and the girls and then back to their house for lunch. It was great to see the granddaughters after 2 years. (Remember last year we went to OR and WA and didn't come east of the Mississippi) After lunch we came home as they had VBS starting with a dinner that night. T made a wonderful pork loin roast with all the fixings for lunch. It was super yummy. MONDAY: Got an email from Sue that the two youngest ones would like us to watch their swimming lessons. So we met at their house and walked to the Y. My...Jump to full entry
Jul 14, 2012 - Illinois
We were up and on the road by 8:30. The only problem we had was the rough roads made out little inverter fault and we would lose power to the computer and WiFi hot spot. As my computer would go blank (the battery is not very good in this so we keep it plugged in all the time) we would have to find a spot to pull off and reset the inverter and restart the computer – then all was well. We wanted to get gas in Iowa as we knew it would be more in Illinois. We found a station and pulled in – only to find that it was going to be a little tight...Jump to full entry
Sep 23, 2010 - Granddaughter time
We left Howe on Monday morning about 9. The trip along I-80 was uneventful. In fact, as we came upon the construction at I-65 it was like we were in a bubble of a no traffic zone. There were trucks ahead of us about ¼ mile and behind us about the same distance. We were all alone on the road except for the stray 4 wheeler that would zip past us. It was a unique experience. Traffic got a bit heavier as we approached the IL/IN border and the toll plaza but still nothing to white knuckle about. We get set up at Leisure Lakes (not our favorite...Jump to full entry
Jul 4, 2010 - Happy 4th of July
AH!! 4th of July in a family campgound. Add in a rock concert a few miles away and you have a crowded, smokey, noisy bunch of kids, dogs and loud-mouthed rednecks shooting off fireworks until all hours of the night. As Ron says- it is only for a couple days. BUT it seems longer. Our friends, Nick and Terry pulled out of their campground last night in CA because of the noise and lack of response by the campground. They also had lost power for several hours in 90 degree heat. We have had fun with the DGDs and I think they have enjoyed it....Jump to full entry
Jul 1, 2010 - Corpse Flower
We had to wait until DD#1 got off work and we also had some errand to run but we got to their house about 12:30. It was fun to see how the girls have grown. They were a bit shy at first but then warmed up to us. We had been watching the progress of the Corpse Flower - or Amorphophallus titanium that is blooming at the University so we went over to get a look at it. Here is a more complete URL about one just like it. http://www.huntington.org/huntingtonlibrary.aspx?id=4132 We didn’t notice any odor but then they also had it blocked off so...Jump to full entry
Jun 29, 2010 - Its granddaughter time!!!
Packed up this morning and were on the road by the bright and early time of 10 am. why hurry - we are retired. Followed the River Road down to where it joined I-80 and then took some back roads down to this Passport Park. Now I know I am cheap - but it really galls me that they have decided that the 4th of July weekend starts on June 28 which means Passport rates do not apply, it is an extra $2.50 to run our AC and if we would have wanted a pull thru site it would have been $4.00 more. Can we say greedy?? So it cost us double to stay here...Jump to full entry
Jun 8, 2009 - On for a Grandma fix
We traveled to our regular campground to see Daughter #1 and family. Campground is really getting run down. They only do the minimum to keep it up and it shows. I didn't venture near the bathrooms nor the laundry as I had a guess what they were like. Spent a great week with family including getting to spend her 16th birthday with oldest granddaughter. Now off to our summer job!!Jump to full entry
Sep 18, 2008 - Granddaughter time again
The trip across IN and IL was a bit different this time as US24 was being used as a detour for 80/94. As we approached the interstate we were stopped for about 10 minutes as trucks were exiting I-65 north and being turned west on 24. We buzzed along pretty well except when we hit the small towns with their 35 mph speed limits. That backed up the traffic for a mile or so but it moved along. Once we hit I-57 the traffic was gone but road construction began. We kept to the Interstates once we got to central IL and took a swing via I-55, I-74...Jump to full entry
Oct 3, 2007 - Granddaughters #1 - 5
Travel to western IL was same old/ same old. We have made this trip many many times. The only thing I noticed was the brown color - ripe corn, ripe beans, dying grasses. It was like the countryside was getting me ready for AZ. Got to Timberview Lake campground and there was no one in the office - we parked in our usual site and set up camp. Still no one to take our money. In fact - no one ever showed up - we finally saw someone at the office (3 days later) and Ron went down and paid for the site. Spent afternoons and evenings with Sue, Tim...Jump to full entry
