Jul 8, 2018 - Day 40 - Belleville IL

Took a long walk with LJ this morning. Went all the way around the small lake past 5 large military tents. The portable kind that look like mobile quanset huts that sleep like 20 or 30 people. No sign of life at the tents; I'm thinking maybe it's a training thing. The road around the far side of the lake is nice. We say hi to a lone woman fisherman - the only sign of life until we return. That's when a bunch of pickup trucks pull into the construction site near the quanset huts. I figure it must be reservists doing their active...

Jul 7, 2018 - Day 39 - Belleville IL

Finally a nice cool morning. For the first time in weeks, I don't think the ac ran once all night. After the big day yesterday, today is a down day. We do leftovers for lunch at Brandi's and then I go back to the RV to do some prep work for the trip to St. Charles on Monday, then hit a bucket of golf balls before heading to church and a big dinner at a very nice upscale chop house.

Jul 6, 2018 - Day 38 - Belleville IL

After hitting the exchange and commissary in the morning, we grab lunch at the golf course, pick up Michaela and caravan behind Brandi over to the arch in St. Louis. The new museum at the Arch just opened a few days ago, so we spend several hours going through that. The museum is actually under the arch and really is excellent (and free). Wendy and I had never been to the old museum, but this new one took 4 years to build and is well worth the trip. Has the entire history of St. Louis with lots of artifacts and pictures. And of course a...

Jul 5, 2018 - Day 37 - Belleville IL

Another stifling day in southern Illinois. It's uncomfortable even at 7am walking the dog. Since there's only a central dump station, we close up the RV and motor over to it to dump tanks early before it gets any hotter. I drop Wendy off at Brandi's and then meet the mobile repair guy back at the RV to look at the toilet. He takes it apart finds that the toilet is missing two screws that are supposed to hold the base and bowl together. Without the screws, waste water seeps into the base every time you flush and would slosh out onto the...

Jul 4, 2018 - Day 36 - Belleville IL

Like a lot of the country, it's a brutally hot, humid day here in southern Illinois. Nothing much to do except stay inside and hang out. After a feast of leftovers for lunch at Brandi's, I brilliantly decide to go hit a bucket of balls at the base driving range. Despite drinking lots of water, even that one hour outside takes its toll and I crash back at the RV for the rest of the afternoon. The rest of the gang show up just after 6 and we all head for a small town about 15 minutes south of the base called Mascoutah. They advertise a good,...

Jul 3, 2018 - Day 35 - Belleville IL

Recovery day. I drop Wendy at her daughter Brandi's home and go play golf at the base course, which is in very nice shape. Hot, humid day interrupted by thunderstorms in the afternoon. After golf I go to Walmart to get the oil changed in the truck but they're booked solid so I just get the truck washed at a little drive thru car wash and then head to Brandi's. We have a great dinner including adult beverages. After dinner I'm outside playing catch with Michaela and Mikaia when LJ bolts out the mysteriously open front door and makes a break...

Jul 2, 2018 - Day 34 - Belleville IL

The day starts out with a bang, especially for our oldest granddaughter Michaela. We're on a bypass highway around Nashville attempting to exit on to I-24 to head to Illinois. It's a complicated interchange and I suddenly realize the exit we need to take is right in front of us. And of course it's a sharp right hand turn and the exit sign says 30 mph; I'm doing about 55. I frantically hit the breaks and yell "hang on". Wendy (in the co-pilot's seat) looks back to see Michaela, a seasoned veteran of the RRT (Refrigerator Restraint Team) leap...

Sep 4, 2017 - Day 6 -

Labor Day. Warm weather and breezy. Slept in and then went to Brandi's for lunch and started painting their new house. Dog has terrible allergies; we're thinking it's from all the grass he's been walking on the past few days. Dropped $72 at Pet Smart on allergy meds including an Ellen Degeneres dog spray. Really??? Cookout at the RV for dinner went well. Violent storm after dinner. Heavy rain and hail but RV held up well. Off to northern Illinois to see my mom and sister tomorrow.

Sep 2, 2017 - Day 4 - Scott AFB RV Park

Another perfect weather day to travel, especially considering all the weather misery to our south and east. Left the Phillipsburg RV park around 9. Turns out Chuck and Nettie were vacationing with family about 50 miles north of us at a lake in the Ozarks. Would definitely like to come back to this RV park. With the micro brewery within walking distance and great areas for dogs, it would be nice to spend a couple of days there. Rest of the day uneventful. St. Louis is a close second to Oklahoma City for worst road conditions. Absolutely...

Dec 20, 2013 - Arrived at Jack & Rosey's in Belleville

We want to thank Jack & Rosy for putting us up in their home two separate times, giving us their bedroom, fixing us breakfast, taking us out to eat and keeping us entertained. It was like being at the Holiday Inn Express except we couldn't get WiFi!!! You need to find that sign-in password Jack so that I don't go through withdrawal. ;-) We drove by the house we lived in on Villa Drive and based on the way it looked I'll bet our old neighbors sure miss us. We all went out to a Chinese buffet on Thursday evening and met up with some old...

Dec 16, 2012 - Our Lady of the Snows

Celebrating Christmas with Grandma & Grandpa Bross. Road trip to the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows. Dinner and lights, and then back to their house for gifts. Griswold story: Lost a hubcap on the LSL/70 overpass; Steve did a u-turn and I ran across 2 lanes of traffic to retrieve it - pardon me, excuse me, thank you. Merry Christmas! mb

GRSWLD adventures

Oct 15, 2012 - Scott AFB, it's 15 miles east of St. Louis

We drove 167 mile to Scott AFB, near Belleville, IL. We've been here before and liked it. First thing we noticed is that the little FAMCAMP is getting upgraded electrical boxes now giving 50/30/20 amp service. This is a four night stop, we anticipate taking advantage of some military resources such as commissary and BX, maybe a golf game. We heard though that downtown St. Louis is inundated with baseball fans so we won't be going there. Any other time, earlier in the year, we'd try to buy a ticket and see a game. We enjoyed the bird...
