Sep 2, 2012 - Day 16, We take a detour due to fires in Montana, head to Salmon, Idaho
Day 16, Sunday 9/2. We get up about 9am. It is cold until the sun starts popping up over the hills. Bob fries up ham for both (and 3 eggs for himself-Bill does not eat eggs) We are lazy about packing up and we get out somewhere around 1PM. We take rte 50 to 388 headed towards Montana and I-90. We pick up "Raliegh" who was one of three guys hunting bear and was stuck with a blown engine. He is a self described "fat guy" who is Montana's version of a good ole boy. We take him on rte 339 to St. Regis so he can call for help. (We were in a...

Jun 29, 2012 - Idaho Summary
Once again we find ourselves behind on the journal, both with narrative and digital record. Our only defense is that as we experience more and more of our lifestyle, we become rebellious towards anything that resembles a schedule or a ‘to do’ list. Discipline is fleeting, at best. Our stay in Idaho was a totally great experience. From our week staying at the Mountain View RV Park in Arco to our three week stay in Salmon we accumulated so many great experiences and memories that it is hard to categorize them and add to the journal. While in...

Jun 15, 2012 - Dirt Road to History
For today’s exploration of our June layover in Salmon, we drove south a short distance to Tendoy on Idaho 28 alongside the Lemhi River. The picturesque river flows through a valley of ranches situated in green pastures and fields. The main industry around here seems to be making hay or making cattle, or both. In Tendoy we turned east onto a road that immediately started a long climb up a lush canyon into the Beaverhead Mountains. In less than a mile the pavement ended and we found ourselves on another Idaho dirt road leading into towering...

Jun 12, 2012 - Suits Optional
Well I was panning through Google Earth again early this morning before the princess woke up. I was searching for a possible hiking trip for us today. I was surveying some canyons on the other side of the Salmon from where we went to Williams Lake. About 20 miles south on US93 I spied a canyon that looked green and appeared to penetrate deep into the Lemhi Range. Thanks to those ‘google-ites', there were some great pictures of waterfalls flowing through hot springs pasted to the satellite picture I was viewing. About this time the first...

Jun 11, 2012 - Williams Lake Boogie
Google Earth is one of our favorite tools for aerial reconnaissance of areas we want to check out or to scope out the terrain for the day’s pull. Avid followers paste their own pictures of the area we might be interested in, and as I scan over the terrain, a little camera icon shows up and I click on it. The picture or pictures expand and we are able to get a preview on how things look before we venture out. As I was viewing the local terrain from 50,000ft, I saw a camera icon over what appeared to be a lake in the mountains well above the...

Jun 3, 2011 - Salmon, Sacajawea and Big Hole
Salmon Idaho is named after the Salmon River. The RV park where we stayed was on the river which was running fast and high.I have a new hobby which to some may sound odd, but to those of us who travel it is of vital importance when you travel to small towns- Grocery shopping. Yes my newest hobby is checking out local grocers for fresh fruit and veggies, and odd items I may have not seen anywhere before. So my first stop once we got settled at the RV park was Saveway...yes Saveway. The happening place in town, besides the bars is the grocery...

Jul 12, 2010 - Salmon River Rendevous
We moved from Casino Creek to Salmon Idaho. The mileage was minimal, the visual treat was maximal. We passed through Challis where we had stayed previously and continued North on US 93 to Century Two Campground and RV Park. This was a neat little place on the Salmon River. In case you are having trouble with the math, we have been on the Salmon River for two weeks at least in one section or another. The place only had about 17 sites, the privacy was decent. The weather was great. The proprietor was a very pleasant fellow named Robert. He...

May 22, 2010 - Yellowstone with Ron & Margaret
We moved 2 miles to the Yellowstone C.G. to meet Ron & Margaret. With temps in the low 30's,snow showers and sun we left for the Old Faithful Inn. After a bison roadblock, construction delay and snow we arrived 2 hours later. We had lunch at the inn then after hitting the gift shops we waited for the 3:10 P.M. eruption. It was snowing pretty hard but the sun did return. We took another way back to Gardiner. This allowed us to show Ron and Margaret Fishing Bridge C.G., Yellowstone Lake,Mud Volcano and Canyon Falls. We were in and out of snow...

May 21, 2010 - Yellowstone Roosevelt Tower
Today we went to Mammoth Hot Springs to send a package to Jonathan and Fin. Everywhere you looked there were Elk or Bison. The town should be renamed Elk City. We left town headed for Roosevelt Tower, an 18 mile drive. At Blacktail Plateau we saw dozens of vehicles and people set up with spotting scopes looking for bears. They had seen bears and wolves earlier in the day. Just past Roosevelt Tower we had lunch and walked a short trail to the canyons edge. A lot on action. A bighorn sheep had just given birth on the opposite river bank. We...

May 20, 2010 - Yellowstone
We arrive at W. Yellowstone entrance about noon on Sunday. After a shopping spree we entered the park. Fishing Bridge C.G. is 56 miles from the entrance. About 4 miles into the park we were met by bison and elk. The ranger said it could take 2 1/2 hrs. to get to the campground. We enjoyed seeing the wildlife. Kayaks on the roof? Yellowstone Lake was frozen solid. Monday we spent the day at Old Faithful. We saw it from ground level, top of the mountain after a nice hike. The best seat in the house was the deck of the Old Faithful Inn sipping...
