Sep 2, 2013 - Palisades Reservoir and Grand Tetons

Sept 2, 2013 – Palisades Reservoir So what's the next best thing to staying free in Island Park? Well that would be staying for free in the Palisades Reservoir which is only 40 miles from Jackson Wyoming. The campground is a big field on the edge of a near totally dry reservoir. On the weekends tons of ATVs and dirt bikes are here (usually far away from the camping area) but during the week it is very quiet. Buddy and I took many hikes on the floor of the reservoir and kept wondering when Moses? Noah? or perhaps David Copperfield would...

Jul 17, 2011 - Palisades Dam & Reservoir

PALISADES DAM & RESERVOIR We started out this morning by looking for another trail to hike. We found Sheep Creek Road and a trail; unfortunately, it was not exactly what we expected. We did hike about ¾ of a mile in, but the result was just exercise—not much to see and no creek! Our day was not a total loss, however. When we got back to the highway, I decided to do a little sightseeing around the dam and reservoir. We stopped at Palisades Reservoir first. I think I mentioned previously that the reservoir is huge. I did a little checking and...

Jul 15, 2011 - Waterfalls & River Rafters

LOST WATERFALL/HOT TRAIL/WILD RIVER We got an early start this morning, as we planned to do some exploring. Several days ago we attempted to find a waterfall just outside of Irwin, Idaho, but we struck out. Last night Don got on the internet and did a little research, so now we knew what road to take. We had driven quite a few miles on a dusty gravel road looking for the waterfall, but didn’t find it. Disappointed, Don turned around and headed back to the highway, thinking this might not be the correct road after all. We were about half a...

Jul 13, 2011 - Little Elk Creek flower heaven !!

LITTLE ELK CREEK TRAIL/WILDFLOWER HEAVEN This morning we took a ride on Hwy.26 past the Palisades Dam area to Little Elk Creek Road. On one side of the highway is Palisades Reservoir, and on the opposite side is a gorgeous blue-green lake with a view of the mountains beyond that is reflected in the lake. My pictures cannot possibly portray the beauty of this setting, but at least I tried. We drove a few miles on Elk Creek Road, and at the end was the trailhead. The trail followed roughly along the creek, which we didn’t pay much attention....

Jul 10, 2011 - Palisades Creek Hike

Today we planned on doing a little exploring not far from home. We had heard about a primitive campground along Palisades Creek that had a pretty hiking trail. Don turned off the main highway onto Palisades Creek Road, which was gravel, but fairly smooth. After a few miles, we came to the campground at the end of the road and found the trailhead across a wooden bridge. The trail roughly followed along the “rip-roaring creek” with lots of white water and cascades, really beautiful. What a pleasant morning it was to be hiking in the forest....

Jul 6, 2011 - Palisades & the Wedding

PALISADES RV PARK/THE WEDDING Today we left the desert behind and headed in a northeasterly direction, still in Idaho. Before long we drove to a higher elevation and were once again in a greener, mountainous terrain with lots of trees. Boy, did I miss trees! We drove through beautiful Swan Valley and the little town of Irwin before arriving at our destination, a small private campground called Palisades RV Park. It has only a dozen or so RV sites and a handful of rustic cabins. There are shade trees, and it’s nicely landscaped with mostly...

Jun 2, 2008 - Jackson Hole last day & Idaho CG

Had a big OOPS today. Got up and went into town, checked out the Silver Dollar Bar and had lunch later there. Then went into a few shops and then back to the Miller house to take some interior pictures. We then went to a few other shops and back to the Silver Dollar for lunch. Gail had the buffalo quesadilla and I had the elk gyro. They were both good. Then headed back to the CG to find a note on the door that said we were supposed to be out! Gail thought we had paid through Tuesday but evidently not. They said we could stay another night...
