Sep 3, 2012 - Grangeville, ID

Hi everybody... did you miss us?! We're still here in Grangeville, ID, where I have about as much use for my camera as I do for the swim fins under the back seat of my truck. The weather has been great, sunny/cool/70's-50's... no rain. Compared with the splendor and beauty of previous stops however, Grangeville is about as scenic as a trip to your mailbox... it's not without it's charms though. We enjoy life in small town America... the slow pace, the "cozy" feeling, the fact that I don't have to lock up my bike when we ride into town,...

Aug 20, 2012 - Osoyoos, BC to Grangeville, ID

I’ve been dreading this entry for days… too many events, too many interesting tidbits, too many towns and stops. How much will I remember… how much can I fit in one entry before people start dozing off… or say “F-it” and close the page? Let’s find out! Our journey through the North Country is finally coming to an end… our little ‘Milepost’ book & map are worn, torn, and ready to be retired. It’s a good thing too, because we’ve been burning through gas money like a 5th grader goes through Halloween candy. We’d normally spend about $100 a...

Jun 22, 2012 - Grangeville, ID

We moved up here to Grangeville, ID on June 21st. The main reason we stopped here is that we have some friends that live on a mountainside near Kooskia, ID. The road from here to Kooskia is very scenic - as are most of the roads around here. There is the Nez Perce Scenic Byway and the Northwest Passage Scenic Byway running through this area of Idaho. The Nez Perce Byway actually traces part of the route that the Nez Perce Inwhichdians traveled from Enterprise, ID to Bear Paw Battlefield near Chinook, MT. The Nez Perce Indians were the...

Where RV Going Next?

Jul 5, 2011 - Grangeville, ID Temp 89

Set the alarm again today. We had a purpose this morning. When we left the theater last night, we stopped at the car wash and found that they had an area at the end of the building to accommodate the washing of RVs. So after a quick breakfast, we exited our campground and while Bob drove the RV, Barb and Darby followed in the CR-V. We drove into Mountain Town and spent about 1 hours spraying all the dust off the Phaeton. And there was alot of dust!! (see the photo of the RV exiting the road to the campground) Then we headed to...

Mar 30, 2011 - Grangeville, Idaho

Today we drove about 50 miles to visit the little town of Grangeville. We had a nice Mexican lunch and enjoyed a bit of shopping. The views along the Salmon River were outstanding. This whole area is quite amazing. It has a lot of wilderness areas with tons of wildlife and natural beauty. The critter count today was 12 deer, two white mountain goats, prairie dogs and tons of Magpies and other birds. We are enjoying our stay in this part of the country much. More later from Idaho.

Jun 14, 2010 - Detour -- Via Central Idaho

Tom: Our plans to take the southern Idaho route to the “high country” to visit the Tetons before heading north to our scheduled month’s stay south of Livingston needed a fix. The weather in the high country was still predicted as “iffy”, and of course we’ll have the option to return via that route after our visit to Montana. Instead, we opted to travel a bit north, and take at least a portion of the route first pioneered by Lewis and Clark just a short 205 years ago. That would point us towards north central Idaho, along portions of the...

Jul 25, 2009 - Traveling Idaho "back roads"

Sometimes you need to get off the concrete divided ribbon of travel and find a two lane road that you have never taken and see how it will bring you to your next adventure. Barb and I decided to travel from the Rupert area to Spokane, WA on a less traveled route, hwy, 55 and 95 which moves north and south through the state of potatoes... This route travels through canyons, beside the rivers and over the farming hills of the state. Small towns are your stop and go style as you travel. You tend to wave at everyone and anyone who passes you on...

May 29, 2009 - Grangeville, ID

Our reason for visiting Grangeville had always been their 4th of July celebrations but that changed after meeting Dave and Nancy Harmon. Dave befriended us when we were having some problems with the missing foot on a landing jack and we have been friends since that fateful day. They live in a mountain cabin that has one of the wonder views of Idaho. Can you imagine how awful it must be for them to sit and look at this view day after day after day? How boring can that be. Oh, if you squint, you can see Montana. There is one drawback and...

Aug 2, 2008 - Hell's Canyon

Hello again!! After a week the Tri-Cities we are on the road again. While in Pasco we stayed at the Franklin County RV Park right behind TRAC. Very nice park. We will spend Oct. thru Dec. there. We had a great time with Nolan at Yellowstone..he was really a good boy and it was fun to see things from his perspective. We have been in Grangeville, Id. for the past couple of days. We are leaving for the Boise area tomorrow. We spent most of today literally driving on the sides of mountains. One of the few road entrances to Hell's Canyon is near...

Vandines' Adventures

Jul 8, 2008 - hells canyon

We spent the 4th of July getting Baby and Bob’s motor home ready to hit the road again. We, Skip and Cindy, along with Bob, Bailey and Kim are headed to Idaho to ride the Hell’s Canyon jet boat. Kim and Bailey spent Friday night in Bob’s motor home as Bob wanted to be on the road by 6 o’clock a.m. for the 600 mile trip. Skip said great, we can make it in one day and have a day to relax before the jet boat tour. Boy was he ever wrong. We got on road by 6:30 and all was going well. Traveled about 60 miles and it was time for a rest stop....

Sep 3, 2006 - Kooskia, Idaho to Missoula, Montana

The trip along the Lochsa River was picturesque and capped by a stop for lunch at Lolo Pass (5,235 feet). After descending from Lolo Pass, we returned to unwelcome traffic in Missoula, where we stayed a couple of days to enjoy local beer and buy supplies that we forgot in Portland.

Jun 15, 2006 - Grangeville, ID for a short visit on the way to McCall

In Grangeville, Idaho, we found Christmas Ranch RV Resort, which is a fairly new camp about 175 miles south of Missoula. This was a welcome stopping point after a very hard, curvy mountain road down from Missoula. The park is on the south end of a small high valley town in open farm country. It is all gravel with no trees, laundry, restrooms, showers, or WiFi. Much of this infrastructure is under construction, so things will improve over time. Springtime in this part of the country is beautiful with lush green fields as far as you can see....
