May 21, 2013 - Oregon Trail Heritage Museum

We spent the day at the Oregon Trail Heritage Museum, which is part of the Idaho State Park system at Three Island Crossing. It is an interesting place, with some nice displays and a lot of information about what life was like for pioneers crossing the country via wagon train. Economic conditions in the US during the 1830ies were very bad and many people were looking for a new start elsewhere in the country. John Fremont and his wife, Jesse, published a series of articles at this time encouraging settlement of the west, claiming it was our...

May 20, 2013 - Three Island Crossing

We are in Glenns Ferry, Idaho, staying at Three Island Crossing State Park. What an interesting and wonderful place! The grounds here are akin to what one would find at a high-end country club, with lots of trees and beautiful lawns. We are parked on a cliff above the Snake River, which is of historical significance in the settlement of the west. The park is located on the Oregon Trail, and many of the pioneers who settled the Willamette Valley in Oregon passed through here in the 19th century. Between 1840 and 1869, wagon trains having...

Jul 19, 2012 - Three Island Crossing State Park, Glenns Ferry, ID

I left Ponderosa SP on July 16th, headed for Three Island Crossing State Park outside Glenns Ferry, ID. I was meeting my brother, Bruce and sister-in-law, JoAnne at the park. I got a good start out of the campground only to wait in line at the dump station!! Got gas in town and headed on my way. Hwy. 55 heading south to Boise, ID was my route, a 2-lane road with multiple area of construction and 1-lane roads. Travel went slowly and on this kind of road I go slowly anyway. The road became twisty and I definitely was the 'slow vehicles, pull...

Aug 18, 2011 - Along the Oregon Trail

We crossed Stinking Water Pass, later followed by Drinking Water Pass. Both were dry. We are following the Oregon Trail. On the OT, the wagons were not the famed Conestoga wagons but prairie schooners, which were smaller. No one but the driver could ride in them because the ride was so bumpy. So the emigrants walked—2,000 miles! And this part of the walk was not pleasant—dry and dusty, high desert country. We stopped in Vale, Oregon and had lunch in their park. Vale citizens have decorated just about every wall in town with a mural...

Aug 4, 2011 - Three Island Crossing State Park

Three Island Crossing SP is located on the Snake River at Glenns Ferry. They have a wonderful Oregon Trail History and Education Center. Oregon Trail pioneers knew this spot well, as it was one of the most famous river crossings on the historic trail. Pioneer travelers used the three-island crossing until 1869.

Oct 14, 2010 - RV Trip to Carmela Winery and Bruneau Sand Dunes

It was predicted to be nice weather last weekend so we decided to take the RV out. While full timing, we often joked about how we would ever be able to just go out for a weekend now that we had all the time in the world. Back then, we would get all our gear out on a weekend - lawn chairs, BBQ, bikes etc, then pack it all up and think nothing of it. Barb said "we probably wouldn't get our chairs out" and I added "Yeah, we probably wouldn't even put the slides out". Now we found ourselves eating those words. And there was a little prep to do...

May 14, 2009 - Finding Friends at Three Island State Park

We're less than an hour from Boise, but couldn't resist stopping at one of our favorite parks - Three Island State Park in Glenns Ferry, Idaho. We would come here often in early spring or late fall while working in Boise as the temps are warmer here along the Snake River. Now the trees are out and the lawn is bright green and even better, there's only a handful of people. The park is divided in two, with an upper loop that overlooks the snake river and surrounding canyons, and a lower loop below. We always pick the upper loop and got one...

Apr 25, 2009 - Glenns Ferry, ID

The slogan on Idaho’s license plate is Scenic Idaho! We were surprised at how much our visit to southwestern Idaho proved that true. We camped at Three Island Crossing State Park, in Glenns Ferry, ID. The campground is along the Snake River and historically, is where some of the pioneers, following the Oregon Trail west, would cross the Snake River. While the scenery along the 84 highway was primarily agriculture and sage brush, we found beautiful and varied scenery along the Snake River. We visited several places where the Snake has formed...

Oct 1, 2007 - Three Island Crossing State Park (and Mexican Mice)

Ah - we finally got out into the open skies once again by spending five days at Three Island State Park in Glenns Ferry, Idaho but not before cleaning out the surprises the mice had left us. Before we left Stanley, our friends Lyle and Judy had trapped six mice the last week they were there - apparently seeking shelter as the temperatures dropped. We had our encounters as well. One night our cat, who usually sleeps through the night, kept racing back and forth from one end of the trailer to the other. What was odd, the dog was then...

Sep 22, 2007 - Carmela Vineyards "Between the Vines" & Three Island Crossing State Park

What a great day, it looked like rain this morning and before Dave got the atv unloaded it sprinkled but we took off and went down the road a short way to Three Island Crossing State Park. The three island crossing was a treacherous crossing of the Snake River on the Oregon Trail and the history center is fantastic plus they have a great State park campground here too. I'll let the pictures show you the history and scenery here. They have a re-enactment of the crossing every August and we hope to make that next time we get around here. But...

Jul 29, 2007 - Mountain Home, Idaho

We have finally left Oregon for the last time this year. There is so much to see and do and it's such a beautiful state. We really loved exploring and seeing Oregon and will definitely be back. We are now in Mountain Home, Idaho (which is about 60 miles east of Boise) and when we got here last Sunday it was 106 degrees. It was so hot and even though there isn't much humidity it was HOT! It stayed hot for about 4 days and it has finally dropped into the 90's. Rick has been doing some cleaning and much needed maintance on the rv and truck...

Jul 17, 2007 - Glenns Ferry, Idaho Camping in a Vineyard

R-Today it is east to Glenns Ferry, Idaho. We selected this campground as it is co-located with a vineyard. The Campground is on one side of the road, the vineyard is on the other, and there is a nine hole golf course around the whole thing. The town doesn't seem to have much else. The population on the sign as we entered town was 1,611. Not exactly a big town. The campground is small but it has grass and trees and the sites are large. At some campgrounds you look out your window right into your neighbors window. Here the nearest neighbor...
