Jan 30, 2014 - Sat. Jan. 25 - Kauai - Day 1 - C - Waimea Canyon

Once again, there are not words for the beauty of this canyon. Kauai calls this the "Grand Canyon" of Hawaii. I have seen the Grand Canyon and personally like this one better. The Grand Canyon is various shades of brown/red - basic earth-tones. Waimea Canyon has all those and then all shades of green with an occasional pop of color from Tulip Trees or other vivid colored flowers in the distance. It was cloudy the day we were there. Our guide said for the best view get there in the morning - the morning fog burns off and it gets clear early...

Apr 25, 2013 - Day 4 - Crabs and Chickens

Day 4 - April 23, 2013 The weather is supposed to clear up today. Goody goody. Because if I had to spend another day indoors watching movies on Lifetime, I would go batshit insane and do something very very bad that would likely result in a Lifetime Original Movie being made about Cathy, such as "My Husband Went Batshit Insane On Our Trip To Kauai: The Cathy Toyen Story". So we got in our rental car and headed to the Waimea Canyon, which is nicknamed "The Grand Canyon of the Pacific". Okay, that's description is a little over-the-top. It...

Kauai 2013

Jan 9, 2013 - Retracing Our Steps . . .

Aloha, Once again the weather was the deciding factor on today's activities. Linda and Steve were interested in hanging out by the pool today and Jerry and I thought it might be a good day to return to the top of Waimea Canyon's Kalalau Overlook to see what we missed two days ago! We headed out around 9:30 with it being a bit misty, but the further west we traveled, the nicer it became and the sun started to peak through the clouds. We made one stop on the way up the windy, curvy road to check out this little waterfall written up in our...

Jan 7, 2013 - Beautiful Waimea Canyon

Aloha, After a brief visit with the concierage to book a catamaran trip along the Na Pali coast later on during our stay, we headed westward to the quaint town of Waimea, the junction point to drive north to Waimea Canyon State Park and Koke'e State Park beyond. What a steep, windy, narrow road! As we continued to climb, the scenery became more rugged and when we reached a pull-off spot, we took advantage to get out of the car to see the beautiful canyon below! Absolutely stunning scenery with streams, farms and deep furrowed ridges. We...

Mar 4, 2010 - Exploring West Kauai

Today was the best day of my life! This was our first full day, and after a fairly good sleep (despite the freakin' roosters crowing all night, which PS are everywhere) we were ready to explore! First stop was the town of Hanapepe where we walked across the swinging bridge over Waimea River. Grabbed some snacks, took off the top to the Jeep, and met some locals at the local grocer. Then we began the drive up to the top of Waimea Canyon. It's about 18 miles from the highway to the top, and around mile 9 it started raining. Top back on. We...

Apr 7, 2008 - Weimea Canyon

We drove down the east coast to the southern part of the island and went into Weimea Canyon State Park. It rained off and on most of the day so some of the overlooks weren't too clear. Even through the clouds we could see the brilliant layers of color in the canyon. It has been called "the Grand Canyon of the Pacific" and is one of the most visited spots on the island by tourists. The drive to the canyon was very scenic. We passed through several coastal towns and a coffee plantation.

2008 Hawaii

Nov 3, 2006 - Another day in beautiful Kauai

The day started as was now our custom on the balcony with our coffee. Today we will be staying in port until early afternoon. Prior to starting on our cruise we had made plans to meet Pam & Bill Atkinson, friends from Rancho Carlsbad, who were vacationing in Princeville, Kauai, for brunch. When we called Pam, she said that it had been raining for a couple of days and the roads from their condo into town had been flooded so they did not want to try to navigate them today. We decided to do what comes natural when you have the option; we...

Apr 16, 2005 - Waimea Canyon and Kokee Park - Alakai Swamp

Beautiful, clear day. Drove to the Waimea Canyon, Kokee Park area. Stopped at Ishihara's in Waimea Town for a spam musabi. Hiked the Pikea Trail to the Alakai Swamp Trail. Very muddy and steep - a real mess. Alakai Swamp is the highest - altitude wise - swamp in the world and is a unique haven for rare birds and plants. Only in the past 10 years has it become accessible with boardwalks making the hike a possibility. Actually the boardwalks were installed to protect the environment. The Pikea Trail offers some great views of the Kalalau...

Jan 6, 2001 - 1975 July 13 - Tauck Tour Day 9 - Kaua'i Beach and Helicopter Tour

Today I took an optional Kena'i Helicopters flight over the Waimea Canyon. There were two other passengers. The woman was very nervous about being on a helicopter. The man asked me if I wanted the front seat and, of course, I accepted. His crestfallen face showed me that it was not the answer he wanted. :>) I suggested that we flip a coin to see who would get the front seat. He would flip three times and I would call. If I got two out of three, I would get the front seat. He agreed. Happily for me, I called correctly all three times!...
