Nov 25, 2016 - Waikoloa, Hawaii

Hawaii Island has several “claims to fame”. It is the largest of the Hawaiian Islands and is over twice the size of all the other islands combined. It has the earth’s most massive mountain, Mauna Loa, that rises over 30,000 feet from its base on the sea floor. It has the most active volcano on earth, Kilauea. It has the site of the earliest Polynesian settlement. Kamehameha the Great, the King who united the Hawaiian Islands, was born, rose to power, and died here. Captain Cook, the British explorer who discovered the Hawaiian Islands, was...

Feb 19, 2013 - Half Way To Heaven

When you reach the top of Mauna Kea they say you are "Half way to Heaven". It was an awesome day as the road to the top of this volcanic mountain was finally opened for us to travel to see some awesome views from 13,796 feet. The road had been closed due to ice and snow the last few days. Mauna Kea is the pride of the astronomical community. Scientists recognized this spot as possibly the best place in the world to observe stars and have been placing the world's finest telescopes up here for years. Two dozen of the finest telescopes in the...

So nice to be in the warm sunshine- 80F when we landed. Our resort is located between the two volcanoes, Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea an is windy most of the time. Very nice 2 bedroom resort that we are going to share with good friends Shaun & Dianne Mulrooney for the next 10 days.

Sep 1, 2011 - Volcano day

Slept In a bit this morning, then made sandwiches and other lunch items ( like fried Ono) and headed across the saddle road to the Hilo area. The brakes on the car scared the hell out of us on the way down the mountain into Hilo so we stopped into the Enterprise rental office and they replaced our car. Satisfied with our new wheels we headed towards volcano national park but made a quick stop at the Mauna Loa macadamia nut farm and factory. We Sampled and bought a few items then off to the park. Spent a few minutes at the visitor centre...

Aug 31, 2011 - Back to the big island

Had ansomewhat lazy day on monday in Honolulu before we flew back to kona Some shopping downtown and a much larger than necessary lunch at the cheesecake factory. Yes - we all had our own pieces of cheesecake and we didnt need any supper! The Hilton had a hard time getting a cab to show up our trip to the airport and we ended up sharing a stretch limo with a nice couple from Calgary. Back to Waikoloa by about 9 pm, a quick grocery run and to bed - alarm clock set for 5:30 am as we were going fishing with captain Alan borowski on the Hapa...

Aug 28, 2011 - Doin Oahu properly

We spent Saturday and sunday making sure we wouldn't forget our visit to this island. Saturday morning started by taking "The Bus" to diamond head park. We were loaded down with water bottles and some snacks. It was already stinking hot by 9 am and we were sweaty little white folks by the time we arrived at the top. What a spectacular view - you can see in all directions around the crater, a wonderful experience. Took "The Bus" back to Waikiki and changed into swim suits for a day the beach. Had lunch at the Tropics grill in the Hilton...

Aug 27, 2011 - On to Oahu

While the Big Island is spectacular, the excitement level did rise a bit when we landed in Honolulu. Our room wasn't ready (we arrived at 9am) so the girls decided it was a good opportunity to go shopping. I lasted for about 1/2 hour then found a place to read. After lunch I made my way back to the Hilton hawaiin village and enjoyed the owners lounge then got things into our room. Girls made it back by 6 or so - fully weighed down with shopping bags. We relaxed for a while enjoying the beautiful view from our room then walked to Keo's for...

Aug 25, 2011 - Beach day on thursday

Went to Samuel Spencer Beach for the late morning and early afternoon. A great beach just 15 minutes down the road. Very quiet, lots of shade trees, clear water and picnic tables. Best beach we have found on the big island. Returned to our resort by about 3:30 and I managed to sneak in a round of golf. Went out alone and got a full 18 in - yahoo. Spent the evening getting packed for an early morning flight to Honolulu - spending fri,sat and sun nights on oahu before coming back to the big island on Monday evening.

Aug 23, 2011 - Resort day and travel to Hilo

Spent our first full day here at the resort. A good breakfast and off to the Hilton village resort and their manmade lagoon. We sunned and snorkeled before returning to our room for lunch. I have permanently left my wedding ring at the bottom of the lagoon in Waikoloa - we snorkeled by a while trying to find it but no luck. Back to the village pool system after lunch for sun and relaxation. Pasta stir fry in our room for supper, yum! On monday we packed up and headed up to Waipio lookout, Akaka Falls, the botanical gardens and into Hilo. A...

Aug 21, 2011 - Aloha - safe and sound in Waikoloa

There was no wasted time on our trip down and despite the stress of just making it to our gates with only seconds to spare in TO and LAX we all still love each other. Knowing that Nana and Grampy have never been to Hawaii we decided to bring them with us. Arrived here at about 4 pm local time on Saturday after sharing the flight from TO to LAX with Brian Burke of the leafs. He seemed to have a seat that was closer to the front of the plane than ours with a lot more leg room! We had been up for about for about 18 hours when we arrived so it...
