Saturday, May 11th -- Our hosts are very early risers so it was not difficult for us have the car packed and ready to leave by 9:30. We headed east on Hwy 11, towards Hilo. Along the 90 or so miles of driving we stopped at the Punalu'u Bakery for cheese and avocado sandwiches and a malasada to eat when we reached Volcanoes National Park. This is a popular "must-stop" eatery for locals. The food is excellent. The vastness of the Mauna Loa lava flows on this southeastern coast is so impressive we had to stop again to try to capture it. Jan 16, 2011 - na nejjižnějším bodu USA

Na Havaji se stmívá už v 7h, takže chodíme spát brzy a brzy také vstáváme (před 7h). Hned ráno jsme se jeli podívat do národního parku Puuhonau, které bylo kdysi útočiště a nábožensky významné místo pro původní Havajce, teď je to nádherná zátoka s palmami a skanzenem chatek. Navíc vstup do národních parků je teď na tři dny zdarma, kvůli výročí Martina Luthera Kinga. Pak jsme jeli na nejjižnější bod ostrova, který je zároveň nejjižnějším bodem USA. Cesta vede přes ranče na skalnatý výběžek k moři (nic víc, žádné suvenýry a certifikáty, jen...

Havaj 2011

Jan 21, 2008 - Hawai'i - South Point

After a day of rest we did get out for some exploring. We went down to the southernmost point in the United States. It was beautiful, sunny, and windy. I read the wind blows so consistently that if it stops, the cows all fall over. There were wind generators all around, but they had fallen into disrepair and were dutifully turning in an exercise of futility. No one asked knew why they were no longer used, but suggested something about the 'island way' of doing things. We did some 4-wheeling back to a green sand beach. Nope, it wasn't moldy....
