May 9, 2016 - Poipu, HI - Mother's Day, Fun With Relatives, Relaxing

On Sunday May 8th we attended worship at West Kauai United Methodist Church in Kekaha. Several years ago the Methodist churches at Kaumakani and Kekaha combined to form West Kauai Methodist. The congregation meets in the Kaumakani church one Sunday each month and in Kekaha the other Sundays. Since this was Mothers Day they had a special service led by, and honoring, the women in the congregation. There were several women who performed a Fijian meke (dance). Another group of women performed a traditional Filipino dance. This group performs...

May 7, 2016 - Poipu, HI - Wedding Day

After breakfast in our vacation home we took a walk down by the beach. Later we went to the Saturday Farmers Market in Lihue for a few things and then went to Tip Top restaurant where we had some delicious wonton mein (noodle soup). After lunch we went to the Kauai Museum in Lihue. We’ve visited Kauai many times over the years but had never stopped at the museum. We spent a couple hours looking around at some interesting exhibits that mostly focus on the early Hawaiian inhabitants and then the plantation years and the many ethnic groups...

May 6, 2016 - Poipu, HI - More Fun on Kauai & Moving Day

We spent this morning (May 5th) at the resort enjoying some time on the beach and taking some walks. After having some laulau and poi at home for lunch we went to the weekly farmers market in Hanapepe to buy some fresh fruit. We also took a ride up the west side to look around and just enjoy the beautiful weather. We stopped at Jo Jo’s in Waimea for a “big kahuna” combo shave ice (ice cream on the bottom, shave ice on the top) – yummy. On the way home we stopped at the Kauai Coffee Visitor Center to look around and sample their latest...

May 4, 2016 - Poipu, HI - More Fun on Kauai

Yesterday (May 3rd) we spent most of the day at the resort enjoying this beautiful place and the beach at the south end of the property. We also went for a walk around the neighborhood and to a nearby shopping area to look around. Yesterday evening we met Randall and Priscilla, two of Elena’s cousins for a nice relaxing dinner at Merriman’s Fish House at Kukui’ula Village Shopping Center in Poipu. We enjoyed a “shared dinner” served family style with a variety of pupus, main courses, and desserts. It was a nice way to sample lots of dishes...

May 2, 2016 - Poipu, HI - Updates from Kauai

Yesterday we attended worship service at West Kauai United Methodist Church at Kaumakani, the church Elena attended when she lived on Kauai through her high school years. It’s still that beautiful little “church in the cane field”, however, all the sugar cane plantations have ceased operations so the cane is being replaced by other crops – coffee and wheat and corn raised for seed. But even where no crops are grown the buffalo grass keeps things looking nice and green. After the church service we joined the rest of the congregation for the...

Apr 30, 2016 - Poipu, HI - The Closest Thing to Paradise on Earth

(Ron Writing) On Thursday, April 28, we met Norm and Wendy for breakfast at Katella Deli – one of your favorite eateries in Southern CA. It’s a great restaurant and they have a fantastic bakery and deli. We had a nice leisurely visit with our friends and some good food. But we didn’t purchase anything at the bakery or deli this time because we have been trying to empty most of the food from the fridge and consume the perishable items. When we got home we started getting ready for our next adventure. Yesterday we spent the morning packing...

Sep 16, 2015 - Poipu, HI - Just Another Day in "Paradise"

(Ron Writing) Today we did a little more touring of the south side of Kauai. We spent some time at Brennecke Beach and Park and walked around the nearby grounds and beach by the Sheraton Hotel and Resort. We also drove over to the Grand Hyatt. We always like to take a walk around the grounds by the Grand Hyatt – it’s the most beautiful resort on the south side of Kauai. This afternoon we had lunch with Elena’s brother and nephew in Lihue. We had a nice visit with them over an early dinner. This evening we walked back down to the beach to...

Sep 15, 2015 - Poipu, HI - A Couple of Relaxing Days

150915 (Ron Writing) We decided to relax and enjoy some “down time” at our rental unit Monday after a very busy few days. We went for some walks to the beach, caught up on some blog entries, edited some photos, did some reading, and just relaxed. This evening Elena’s cousin Priscilla invited us to join her and her family for dinner at MCS Cafe in Hanapepe. We had a nice visit and a good meal at this restaurant that is new in Hanapepe since our last visit.

Sep 13, 2015 - Poipu, HI - Picnic with the Classmates

(Elena Writing) We got up early to attend church service at the West Kauai Methodist Church in Kekaha. The new pastor was back from vacation and we were blessed by her message. The service was followed by a light lunch attended by many of the members. We left for my class reunion picnic at a park along the Waimea River. Many classmates and spouses were there. Some members played games before lunch was served. We continued visiting until mid-afternoon. There was so much leftover food that we made plates for people to take home and also gave...

Sep 12, 2015 - Poipu, HI - Saturday Night with the Classmates

(Elena Writing) Due to inclement weather, our class tour of a taro farm in the Waimea River Valley this morning was cancelled so we relaxed at home. Some of the class members got together to learn how to make haku leis and other Hawaiian crafts. In the evening we attended the 21st Annual General Membership Meeting and Awards dinner of the Waimea Alumni & Friends Foundation (WAFF). There was a reserved table for our class as well as for the Class of 1958, who were celebrating their 75th Birthday Class Reunion. A delicious prime rib and...

Sep 10, 2015 - Poipu, HI - Lunch with Uncle Johnnie

(Ron Writing) We did our laundry this morning at the handy little laundry room here at the Poipu Plantation. It has three coin operated washers and three dryers. We are really enjoying the convenience of this little resort. It’s in a great location not too far from friends and relatives, close to the beach, very comfortable, and the price is very reasonable. There’s a vacation rental right across the street from us that goes for $10,000/weekly for a 5-bedroom ocean front house. Needless to say, we aren’t paying quite that much! There’s...

Sep 9, 2015 - Poipu, HI - Touring the East & North Sides of Kauai

This morning we packed a lunch and took a drive up the east side of the island and along the north side to Hanalei. We stopped at several beach parks along the way to enjoy the scenery. Filled up with gas at Costco for $2.699 on the way home. That’s the lowest price for gas on Kauai since 2004! Had another “Hawaiian” meal at home this evening – poi, lomi salmon, laulau, seaweed salad, sushi, and rice. Join us!
