Jul 13, 2010 - Koloa, Kauai, HI (Day 13) - Ohana Day

(Elena Writing) Today is Aunt Olivia’s Day. I spent the day “bonding” with her. Whatever/wherever she wanted to do was my pleasure to make it happen. She’s an energetic octogenarian who has a sound mind and in good health. We went shopping at Kukui Grove and made several other stops along the way. We ate at Kim Chee, a popular Korean restaurant, and the spicy kim chee was a savory delight. Ron stayed at the condo to do some computer work while Aunt Olivia and I had a very nice day together. This evening we went over to Priscilla’s house to...

Jul 12, 2010 - Koloa, Kauai, HI (Day 12) - Church at Kaumakani

(Ron Writing) Yesterday we attended the morning worship service at the Kaumakani Methodist Church. After church everyone was invited to stay for lunch in the fellowship hall where the family of the new bride and groom served food that was left over from the reception yesterday. Most of the dishes were traditional Filipino food – delicious. After lunch we stopped by the Grand Hyatt Regency Resort in Poipu. It’s just a couple miles from where we are staying and is one of the nicest resorts on the island. We enjoy just walking around the...

Jul 10, 2010 - Koloa, Kauai, HI (Day 10) - Wedding

(Ron Writing) We spent most of the day at home enjoying our beautiful accommodations. This afternoon we attended the wedding of Tyra and Myles. She is the daughter and granddaughter of Elena’s long time family friends. Tyra and her parents now live in South Dakota as do Myles and his parents. They all came to Kauai along with all the wedding attendants and many other friends and family members so they could have the wedding here in Hawaii. They were married in the Kaumakani Methodist Church, her mother’s girlhood church, and the church her...

100709 (Ron Writing) I’ve gotten way behind updating our journal – hey, I’m on vacation – but will try to bring you up to date before the weekend. On Monday evening Elena’s cousin Randall invited us over to his house for dinner. Elena’s cousin Priscilla and her Aunt Olivia joined us and we had a nice dinner out in the yard and then a nice visit in the house after it started to shower. Tuesday we went to Lihue (the capital of the island) to do a little shopping. We spent most of the day at the resort just relaxing and enjoying the facilities...

Jul 4, 2010 - Koloa, Kauai, HI (Day 4) - Happy Birthday USA

(Ron Writing) This afternoon we went to the annual Independence Day celebration in Kekaha. Kekaha is an old sugar plantation and mill town that sponsors the largest July 4th celebration on the west side of the island. When Elena was growing up here she attended the Kaumakani Methodist Church. That church and the Methodist church in Kekaha have now combined their congregation but still have services in both towns. Elena’s cousin Priscilla and Aunt Olivia still attend that church and are very active members. One of the church’s fund raising...

Jul 3, 2010 - Koloa, Kauai, HI (Day 3) - Plantation Reunion

(Ron Writing) Yesterday we spent the morning relaxing at the condo. In the afternoon we went over to the Methodist church to help Elena’s cousin Priscilla and another lady prepare the mix for the malasadas they will be selling on the 4th of July at one of the local celebrations. They do this several times per year to raise money for the church. On the way back to the condo we stopped at the Kauai Coffee Company in Eleele. We always like to make a stop here to taste their latest coffee blends and just enjoy the beauty of the surrounding...

Jul 1, 2010 - Koloa, Kauai, HI - On Vacation

(Ron Writing) Yesterday we spent most of the day packing our bags and getting Da Honu and Harecules ready for a month’s rest at an RV storage lot in Anaheim. We got them settled in their parking space late in the afternoon and then took Barbara and Archie out to celebrate their 48th anniversary. We spent the night at Barbara & Archie’s house and then got up very early this morning for our 6:15 AM shuttle van pickup and ride to John Wayne Airport where we caught a flight to Honolulu and then a connecting flight to Kauai. We got to Kauai...
