May 17, 2013 - Kilauea Iki

Friday, May 17th -- After an early but leisurely breakfast our friend headed back home. My ankle was not too sore and could take weight on it again but I didn't want to be halfway along a long hike and have it give out on me. We opted to rehike the Kilauea Iki trail today. The 2.5 miles across the crater floor are mostly flat and even footing. I was babying my ankle so the 5 miles took us longer than we would usually take, but walking across the floor of a lava lake, with crater walls rising above us is always a humbling experience. May 12, 2013 - Pu'u Loa Petroglyphs & Naulu Trail - Volcanoes NP

Sunday, May 12th -- Since it was Mother's Day today we wanted to avoid local beaches and parks. Instead we opted to hike the Naulu Trail off of Chain of Craters Road in Volcanoes NP. The weather was not that great for beach activities anyway. First we drove to mile 16.5 of the Chain of Craters Road to the .7 mile Pu'u Loa Petroglyph Trail and also checked out the Puna Coast Trail across the road to get a feel for what that would be like if we hiked the 12 miles to camp overnight at Halape.
