Happy New Year! With us no longer full timing, will do updates while we still have access to the trip journal on any trips we take from our new home in Idaho. Jun 20, 2012 - Day 6

Day 6 - June 20 Hung out at the main pool/beach all day! Had the big move to the "quiet pool" in the late afternoon. Had happy hour on the lanai (patio). Off to the Keoki Paradise for dinner. The restaurant was right across the street and easy to walk to. We were originally going to go drive to the "other Marriott" for dinner - but changed our minds after a few drinks on the lanai! Laura and I enjoyed our dinner very much - John thought his fish and chips were "ok" - George hated his. We all enjoyed the live music....well at least Laura and...

Hawaii 2012

Jun 19, 2012 - Day 5

June 19 - Day 5 The weather forecast called for sunny and 81 - like it does everyday - but today turned out to be a misty day, which is not typical for the South Shore of Kauai. It rained/misted on and off all day, but we made the best of it. We started our day at Spouting Horn. This is a small lava shelf where water from waves is thrust through and opening, casing water and air to squirt out a blowhole. This blowhole is different than others around Hawaii in that it has an additional hole that blows only air, causing a loud moaning and...

Jun 18, 2012 - Day 4

Day 4 - June 18 We opted for a relaxing day. Most of us slept in - I went for a run - we hung out at the pool - we got lots of sun - we relaxed. In the late afternoon George went golfing - Laura and I went shopping - and John went for a swim. Laura and I hit Hilo Hattie Souvenir Shop to pick up a few "one of a kind" souvenirs.... that later we found at the local Walmart for much cheaper. Illinois Suckers.....again. In the evening - Laura, George and I enjoyed a few Red Bull and vodkas that led to a dance party in the condo. Lastly, the...

Hawaii 2012

Jun 17, 2012 - Day 3

Day 3 - June 17 Today we went beach hopping on the North Shore of the island! Oddly enough - it is the "cloudy" side of the island, but it has the better/prettier beaches. We started our day at Secret Beach. After a 15 minute steep hike downward - we wandered into exceptional beauty. We followed the advice in "the book" and ventured off to the left in search of the Secret Lava Pools. After climbing over many large lava rocks - our adventure led us to the pools. It was like a scene out of a movie as the waves crashed over the lava rocks...

Hawaii 2012

Jun 16, 2012 - Day 2

Day 2 - June 16, 2012 Today we woke up at 5:00am - much to Laura's objection - to go on our boat tour of the Na Pali coast. All I can say is....breathtaking. We saw the whole west coast of Kauai's incredible beautiful volcanic landscape - all from our bouncy raft boat. Shortly after we began our journey, we came upon dolphins! The captain gently rode right through literally about a hundred or so dolphins. They were still sleeping when we started our journey (smart dolphins) so they were just quietly swimming slowly, bouncing up and down....

Hawaii 2012

Jun 15, 2012 - Day 1

Day 1 - June 15 Aloha and Happy Birthday to my wonderful mom! Today was our first morning that we woke up in beautiful Kauai Hawaii. Feeling a bit jet lagged - by 9:00am - George had already snorkeled, had Starbucks, and went for a jog. Laura and I went for a walk along the beach and through a few other resorts and ended at the beautiful Hyatt Resort. John - not feeling jet lagged at all - slept in. Around 10am we all walked to the Sheridan for the breakfast buffet! Yummy! After breakfast, we decided to just hang by the ocean for the day...

Jul 25, 2010 - Kekaha, Kauai, HI (Day 25) - Class Reunion

(Elena Writing) We had breakfast with Vera and Dennis in the hotel restaurant and visited until almost noon when we all checked-out. We drove them to the airport for their flight back to Honolulu. It was very nice of them to fly over to spend a couple days with us to celebrate birthdays, visit and just enjoy some time together. We then picked up my brother and nephew and had lunch. We visited for a while. Then we drove to Kekaha to the beach house where my high school class reunion was held. The committee rented a house with four bedrooms...

Jul 22, 2010 - Kapaa, Kauai, HI (Day 22) - Vera & Dennis

(Ron Writing) After running some errands yesterday morning we went over to the airport and picked up our friends Dennis and Vera around 1:40 PM. Dennis and I worked together at Hughes Aircraft Company back in the 1980’s. Since retiring they have moved back to Vera’s home island of Oahu. They flew in to spend a couple days on Kauai to visit us and celebrate Dennis’s and Elena’s birthdays. We came back to the hotel so they could check-in and then we sat out by the snack bar the rest of the afternoon visiting. Yesterday evening we went to the...

Jul 20, 2010 - Kapaa, Kauai, HI (Day 20) - Drive to the North Shore

(Elena Writing) This morning it was quite overcast with periods of light showers with the sun peeking through every now and then. We decided to take a drive to the North Shore with hopes that the weather would clear. We made many roadside stops to enjoy the gorgeous views of the island. There is a jogging/walking/bicycling path that parallels the ocean shoreline. What a great way to stay fit and also enjoy the beautiful views simultaneously. We stopped at several beaches and were awed by the clear crystal blue waters of the Pacific Ocean....

Jul 19, 2010 - Kapaa, Kauai, HI (Day 19) - Happy Birthday, Elena!

(Elena Writing) It rained very hard several times during the night but there were just a few very brief showers today. We checked out of Kalaheo Inn this morning and moved to Aston Aloha Beach Hotel in Kapaa on the east side of the island. We celebrated my "36th" birthday at Wahooo Seafood Grill in Kapaa. We enjoyed superb seafood dishes and it a nice relaxing evening. Chocolate 101 (dessert) was a composition of pieces of brownies and cake topped with chocolate mousse and vanilla ice cream. It was placed on a plate drizzled with...

Jul 18, 2010 - Kalaheo, Kauai, HI (Day 18) - Family Reunion

(Ron Writing) On Thursday we checked out of Lawai Beach Resort moved into the Kalaheo Inn in Kalaheo. We went out for dinner at Da Imu Hut in Hanapepe. We both had the Hawaiian plate again. On Friday it rained almost all day – very unusual for this side of the island at this time of the year. We spent the day at home. Friday evening we went over to Randall’s house for a dinner and a get-together. Several of Elena’s relatives who are in town for the reunion were there and we had a nice dinner out in the front yard area. Saturday morning we...
