Jan 22, 2014 - Jan. 22 - Maui Beach Hotel - Kahului

These are pictures from my balcony at the Maui Beach Hotel. You can see the Iao Valley from one angle and the beach from another. My bags have just been picked up in preparation for our next move. We are now going to the island of Molokai 2 nights. Molokai was the site of a leprosy colony run by St. Damien. Many native Hawaiians got leprosy from the Europeans since they had not natural immunity. My book club read the book Molokai. I would highly recommend it. Today will be a long day. We go to lunch. Then bus to Lahaina Town to shop. At...

Jan 20, 2014 - Sun. Jan. 19 - Flight to Maui - Iao Valley

We were to leave the Kona Sheraton for the Kona Airport at 11:15 AM. We had to have our checked luggage ready for pickup from our hotel rooms by 10:15. Then met in the lobby with our carry-on luggage at 11:00 AM. We got to the airport at NOON. Our Road Scholar leader had already picked up our boarding passes so all we had to do was check our luggage, go through security and wait. Our flight was not until 2:00 PM with boarding beginning at 1:40. Denver was playing New England in the playoffs. There were no TVs since the airport was...

Sep 8, 2011 - How many hours does it take to fly to Hawaii? 8 hours too many!

ok, this plane flight was a little much. Sitting for 8 hours on a plane, packed in like sardines, is not my idea of a fun time. When we boarded the plane, the flight attendants informed us that the entertainment was not working, so there was no movie on the flight, no radio frequencies to listen to, and the electrical outlets didn't work which meant no phone or computer charging on the flight. This seriously disappointed Chris, since he wanted to work on the plane and finish his presentation due by the end of next week. He was able to...

Feb 24, 2011 - Maui - Day 17 & 18 - Jungle Fever

Aloha from Maui. We landed yesterday morning and have been on the road non stop. Day 17 (Feb 23) was a mild but long day, we left the big island at 8:24am and arrived at 8:54am. Plenty of time to get organized for this weeks journey however Jason came down with a high fever and cold so we spent about 2ours in the costco parking lot so he could sleep the fever off as it was getting progressively worse as the day wore on. We got JJ some cold pills at Costco so he took them asap and once feeling better we were on our way to get a camping...

Jan 22, 2011 - přelet na Maui

Ráno jsme si ještě stihli zaplavat v Aneoho'omalu Bay, prohlídli si blízké petroglyfy (původní havajci ryli obrazce do lávy), dali si hamburger u Wendy's (jediná pobočka na ostrově).

Havaj 2011

Dec 19, 2010 - Kahului, Maui

So my orignial plan for today was a beach day, but I woke up and it was overcasted, so I went down to the front desk to find out what is there to do. The options they had were, take a 9 hour bus ride to and from Hana which is suppose to be gorgeous with waterfalls, or a 5 hour tour that brings you to the rainforest and hike into the rainforest and see waterfalls. I dread bus rides after last years advenutre with them and I went for the hike in the rainforest! So, there were about 10 people in our group. On the van ride to the rainforest, I...

Mar 3, 2010 - Almost made it to the Volcano

We wanted to drive up to the Haleakala Volcano today, but 1/2 way there, the jeep started to rock back and forth. As soon as I took the foot off the gas and put on the brakes, it got worse until I stopped completely. Apparently this brand new Jeep has a new type of transmission that select the best gear for me to use at the time. I only have a "D" on the transmission selector and I don't have a 1 gear or 2nd gear that I can select. It works nice on flat ground, but not here on the side of the mountain. I decided to turn around and head...

Mar 2, 2010 - Submarines and Whales

There was a wind warning last night with winds going up to 50 mph. We wend down to the water’s edge after the sunset and listened to the wind and waves hitting he shore roar sounded like a jet engine. This morning we went on a submarine ride and visited some reefs and their abundance of fish/sharks/and octopus. We were delayed going down because a whale in the area. In the afternoon we went on a whale watching trip; and saw lots of whales. After supper we listened to Polynesian show at the mall. As I write this, I can hear the winds...

Mar 1, 2010 - Shopping and visiting old sites

In talking with the Concierge at the front desk, she said on the first of month there's always a test of the tsunami warning system. Sure enough, as we were driving by one of the sirens, the alarm went off at a low volume. I don’t know what other tourists thought but I’m glad we know about it. Today we decided to visit the beaches and condo we stayed at ten years ago. We were going to spend the day at old beach, but it was too windy to sun tan or eat lunch on the sand. The ocean was so full of whitecaps, it reminded me our Saskatchewan...

Feb 28, 2010 - Travel day to Maui

We said goodbye to the sea turtle sunning himself on the lava rock in front of the hotel for the last time and did our travel routine: Packed up the suitcases, Checked out of the room, return the car, and got on the plane. Followed by: got off the plane. Got the car, Checked into the room, and unpacked the suitcases. The weather was hot and sunny when we left, but here in Maui it's been raining for most of the day and now it's also cold, (18 degrees) and windy (33km)

Sep 20, 2009 - Race Day

From Brynn Freeman’s Perspective (a Maui marathon finisher)… Kelli and I were awake (only slightly) at 2am to get ready to leave the hotel and make the AIDS marathon travel bus that parted at 3am. We met up with our friend, Ashley, before getting on the bus to Kahului. We drove 45 minutes to get to the starting line at the Queen Kaahumanu Center (aka the mall). The three of us were hoping to belt out some sort of AIDS marathon theme song to energize us. We considered singing a Beatles’ song, but couldn’t muster up the energy. Instead of...

Sep 16, 2009 - I could pee in my pants from excitement!

By 3:30 in the afternoon, after several hours of being on a plane, we were so excited to see the seatbelt light go out (signifying that we had arrived in Kahului and could get off the plane) that one of us began to squeal and bounce around in the chair, giving the neighbors on our flight a good laugh… We’ll let you guess who was responsible for that! Our dear friend and Maui resident, Ben, greeted us with leis! We began our Maui adventures as wanna-be locals. We ran errands with Ben, visiting Radioshack in the mall, the campground licensing...
