Apr 30, 2018 - Goodbye Oahu

@@@@@@@ KAPOORS ON THE ROAD We had a great time visiting with Raj and his family and the big surprise was that we were able to spend time with Vy’s parents as well. We’d both been to Oahu before so we didn’t spend any time exploring the island, but chose to hang around the pool with the grandchildren and make to the most of our time with them. Olivia and Moosie were very used to having people coming and going during their winter months in Hawaii, so they didn’t make a fuss when we told them it was time for us to leave. Thank goodness for...

Apr 29, 2018 - Family Beach Time

@@@@@@@ KAPOORS ON THE ROAD We were quite content to spend time in the pool each day and weren’t particularly keen on dragging everyone to a beach where we would have to contend with saltwater stinging our eyes, sand getting into every crevice available and hauling all the towels, sunblock, sunglasses, sunhats, clean clothing, etc. from the car to the water. It was so much simpler to take it easy in the private pool. However, towards the end of our stay Raj suggested we walk down to the nearby beach for an evening visit. The sun was getting...

Apr 28, 2018 - Grandparent Pool Time

@@@@@@@ KAPOORS ON THE ROAD As far back as I can remember, I have loved to be in water. I was always the first one out of the car and into the lake whenever we got a chance to get out of Edmonton and to a beach. I used to love going to the public swimming pools winter and summer, the only thing I hated was having to put on a wet bathing suit whenever there was a chance to have a second swim on the same day. Anil didn’t have much the opportunity to learn to swim when he was growing up in India. After one of the children in his school drown...

Apr 27, 2018 - Honolulu Heaven

@@@@@@@ KAPOORS ON THE ROAD Raj and Vy, along with Olivia and Moosie were on hand to pick us up at the airport. We had to drive to the far side of the dormant Diamond Head volcano, to the neighbourhood known as Kahala, but the highway H1 runs along the northern side of Honolulu and it didn’t take long before we were in the lovely residential streets, passing by beautiful homes with lush gardens. Moosie was quick to run to the security panel and punch in the code to open the front gate. We crossed the lawn and into the expansive house and...

Sep 26, 2017 - A Beachy Day - Day 5

"Karin's Grand North Shore Adventure Tour" - This is what I am calling our day. Granddaughter Karin picked us up early this morning for a tour of some of her favorite beaches. She is truly a beach and surfer gal! Some highlights of the day in addition to exploring the beautiful beaches: Shave ice at the famous Matsumotos. Hawaiian shave ice is similar to a snow cone, but with much finer ice. It is topped with fruit syrups which are absorbed by the ice, then topped with ice cream & sweetened condensed milk. Heaven! Sue & Karin snorkeling A...

Sep 25, 2017 - A Touristy Day - Day 4

We began with a Waikiki shopping trip for a dress and accessories for the night's luau. Fish tacos for lunch at the popular Pau Hana food truck plaza. This afternoon we took what is called the "Wonder" tour billed as a "sightseeing tour to experience the magic of Oahu's East Shore and windward side". Again, the photos speak for themselves. This evening, Karin joined us for the Hale Koa luau dinner and show.

Sep 24, 2017 - Pearl Harbor - Day 3

December 7, 1941 - "A day which will live in infamy." - Franklin Delano Roosevelt's words on announcing the attack on Pearl Harbor. These words are certainly true for anyone who visits Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial there. I'll let my photos tell the story of our visit there today. Dinner tonight at Bibi's in the Kale Koa complex.

Sep 22, 2017 - Aloha from Hawaii - Days 1 and 2

Here it is - Jan 7, 2018 - 3 months after returning from my Hawaii trip and I'm just now getting around to writing a blog about it. Since I promised myself I wouldn't go on another trip until I finish this one and since I have another trip coming up soon, I realized I would have to publish with mostly photos and less narrative than usual. The idea and planning for this trip began early in the year when I was asked how I was going to celebrate my 80th birthday in October. Without hesitation I said "A trip,of course!" And then as I thought a...

Living Our Dream

Mar 29, 2017 - Ian's idea of Heaven

Four days at sea until Hawaii. We cross the date line again but this time we gain a day and have two Saturday 25th March! The first two days the weather is good so sunbathing for me some of the time. The last couple of days the sea is rough so we stagger about and a lot of people are suffering from sea sickness. Luckily neither Ian or I are affected. We win a few more quizzes and amazingly I win the killer darts! Ian took part in that game and I beat him! I also beat him in a few games of scrabble! He's not a happy boy! We are going to do...

Nov 19, 2016 - Honolulu, Oahu

Honolulu is the capital of Hawaii. It has two main areas, the famous Waikiki Beach and Downtown Honolulu. If you are there for fun, excitement or relaxation, then Waikiki Beach will be the place for you. If you like some culture and history, don’t miss Downtown Honolulu. HILTON HAWAIIAN VILLAGE WAIKIKI We chose the Hilton Hawaiian Village since we are Diamond Members and therefore, have many benefits, has the type of suite we prefer, is located right on Waikiki Beach, and also because it is a large resort with several restaurants, shops,...

Apr 7, 2016 - Honolulu, Hawaii

We arrived in Honolulu on April 7 to slightly cloudy skies and a possibility of rain in the forecast. Because we had spent 2 weeks here a few years ago we didn’t need to go rushing off to the main sights as we had explored a lot of them before. We took the local bus to the far end of Waikiki, near the zoo, and then walked the beach for a while. It was packed with tourists enjoying the sand and water sports. The sun had come out and it was lovely. A coffee was needed so we made a stop and checked our emails after 4 days at sea. We went back...

Mar 4, 2016 - Catching up

Mo is the adventurous type and has wanted for a very long time to try surfing. In the years he spent in Hawaii, Jim watched surfing but never got an urge to try. We made up for that this morning. We signed up with Big Wave Dave and hit the surf with Dave himself. A classic, almost kitschy tourist thing to do, but very fun and worth the time. Ironically, the only other client with us was a young woman who had graduated from the same High School as Jim, only 20 or more years later. Or was it 30? Jim had never been to Pearl Harbor, either, so...
