Apr 10, 2007 - Hawaii - Big Island - Hilo

Today we were off to explore the Big Island in our little car. First up we took the bold decision to hit a dirt road across a vast lava flow. Very bumpy and with lots of pot holes we eventually made it to Mahai'ula Beach, a lovely, long secluded beach with salt and pepper sand and coral rubble. This is a great spot if you want to get away from the crowds. We then made our way back to the main road and headed north towards Waikoloa Resort where we saw the lovely long 'Anaeho'omalu beach before taking a walk through the Waikoloa Petroglyphs...

Mar 24, 2007 - Aloha Hawai'i

So we woke up in the morning and grabbed our suitcase and headed to the plane. The girls weren't too happy with me - no hair brushing, or teeth brushing - okay we got out of our jammies. As I told them though - we would deal with all that stuff when we got to Kona airport! We had 3.5 hours there! We unpacked our suitcases, repacked them (forgetting warm clothes for the plane as it was not going to be warm in Seattle!) We had some brunch. We bought souviners. And then we bought us each our choice of fresh lei! They are so amazing! The smell,...

Mar 19, 2007 - Kona to Hilo

Okay I changed the time on my watch and somehow changed the date as well. So the entries that I put in earlier are wrong and now I've got it all right. Back on track!!! I am going to back up to last night a bit as I took a special evening to myself. After the girls were asleep I set out to find a pub or something. Kailua-Kona is quite the tourist town with restaurants and shops. It is quite quaint and from my impression anyways, not posh. I went walking along the seaside street and walkwd in the warmth of the night for a gpod hour. It was...

Dec 18, 2006 - Big Island

I woke up feeling much better and we went for a walk over to the shopping centre as it was to late to get any tours as they were booked out. The shops weren't much and the place was pretty empty. The beach wasn't anything to brag about but there was a big cruise ship in, 'The Pride of America'. After taking a flight to Hilo on the Big Island and our easiest customs check to date here in the states, we took a nice and cheap taxi to our hotel. Our taxi driver told us that he organises tours and as we had missed out yesterday we asked him a...

Oct 29, 2006 - Arrival in Hilo

I awoke at my usual time of 4 AM. I looked forward to some devotional time on the balcony. It was dark, but I could see the water as the ship cut through it. I watched the lights on the shore, read my bible and thanked God for His beautiful world. Shonda joined me around 5 AM. We had our coffee on the balcony and enjoyed the morning. We could not see the sun rise because we were headed southwest and our cabin was on the starboard side next to the island. I don't know why but I love to walk laps around the ship. The walking track was on deck...

Sep 29, 2006 - Hilo, Hawaii

It was raining when we arrived in Hilo. From what we know it pretty much always rains in Hilo. This did not make much difference to us, because we got in a van and headed toward the lava. When we were here three years ago we spent lots of time hiking on the lava toward the point where it has been flowing into the sea since 1983. It was so fascinating we did the same hike again at night which was eerie since the sky and the lava were so black. We also had explored the old caldera and lava tube in the national park and thought we had done a...

Mar 4, 2006 - Waikiki (Oahu) - Hilo (The Big Island)

Caught the shuttle bus to the airport at 4.30am. Flew on a propelled plane from Honolulu to Hilo on the Big Island. Hilo is a volcanic island so there is a lot of black rock. Hilo is also known to have one of the wettest climates in all of the USA. Arrived at 8.30am and got free shuttle to Arnotts Lodge. Our room wasn't ready so we walked to a small shop and sat by the sea for a short while. We were really tired so slept for 4 hours, then went for a walk to a bigger shop to get some essentials. Hostel had a 'guest appreciation evening'...

Sep 19, 2005 - Hedonisia Hawaii

It is as tropical as it gets (*read* rains at least 12 times each day), we are sleeping in a tent, our kitchen is outdoors, we have a mulching toilet and the shower is freezing any time of the day, but it is AMAZING. The people are so friendly (there are only 5 of us here at the moment (including us), which makes it so much more like a community rather than a hostel, although I have just been ousted of a poker match after playing like a demon for 2 hours (before my beginners luck ran dry!) We are catching a lift with someone to the nearby...

Sep 7, 2005 - Maui to Big Island

Got shuttle to airport then two uneventful flights to Big Island (via Honolulu). Got shuttle from airport to lodge. Lovely clean room with patio and our own bathroom! What luxury! Katie's bites are excruciating. Headed into town for some better insect repellemt (the one we have seems to attract them!) and some after bite stuff and some of those coil things for the patio - we're not messing around anymore! Oh also a 24 pack to ease the pain. Shared a pizza at little Italian then got cab back - thought about bus but was hour and half wait...

Apr 21, 2005 - Hilo to Kailua Kona

And another beautiful day on the Big Island. Enjoyed complimentary breakfast at Uncle Billy's before doing some shopping around in Hilo. Visited some of my favorite shops including Sig Zane, a koa wood art gallery and a junktique store. On the way from Hilo to Kailua-Kona, stopped at Akaka Falls and hiked around, Waipio Valley Lookout where it was raining, Tex Restaurant for malasadas and lunch, Mauna Kea Galleries now in Waimea to look at the Hawaiian antiques and at various art galleries along the Hamakua Coast and Waimea.
