The summer after my freshman year of college in Los Angeles, I returned to Hilo and worked as a waitress for the first (and only) time. Picture the scene: a nothing-fancy, island-style diner, with vinyl booths, formica tables, a jukebox—and me in a white-polyester dress. One day during my lunch shift, I handed menus to a family of haole tourists. The father peered at me. "Why are there so many Japanese people here?" he said. "It doesn't feel like we're in Hawaii at all." Back then, at eighteen (and a very young eighteen), I was speechless...
