Just stopping in for a rest and a few repairs. The storms int he phillipines set us a we bit off course, but luckily in the direction we needed so we still made it safe to Guam. and actually a bit ahead of schedule! What can I say about Guam other than its unique beauty and unique people. they are like the craftsy grandparent artisans of the late 70's and 80's. Very peaceful and always welcoming to me crew. Of course, we bring thinks like supplies to them whenever we have time and trade it for the local food fish and fruits.

Mar 8, 2009 - Guam
We pulled into the harbor at Guam around 10 am this morning. We were escorted in by the United States Coast Guard's armed vessels. It was interesting to see the American flags flying after 47 days away from the U.S. The harbor entrance was beautiful, and the water was as well. Well the last time I was excited about a K Mart store was when they opened one in Key Largo when I was in high school. We learned that Guam has K Mart, so we got our shopping list ready and hopped the free shuttle bus into town from the pier. It was about a 15 mile...

Nov 23, 2007 - A wet, wierd place - Guam
The flight to Guam was filled with Japanese vacationers, who took flash photographs of each other at every possible moment, making the plane appear to hold a miniature thunderstorm. They were mostly older, with families, and unfailingly polite. For the Japanese, Guam is a resort island, a 3-hour flight away, where they can catch their tour bus to the resort and go shopping in American malls. To us, Guam was an odd American outpost, a suburb 4,000 miles from the nearest American city. It's an overgrown military fortress, a remnant of...

Aug 13, 2007 - University of Guam
For a few days, I stayed at the hotel and worked on my syllabi, and explored the island. Now, two weeks later, I still haven't seen the whole island. Finally, on Monday, I went through orientation for new faculty. I won't bother my readers with the details on that...there was a lot of discussion of the "bad old days" 10 years ago when the territorial government intervened frequently for political and family reasons (same thing on Guam) in university affairs and almost cost the university its accreditation. However, I moved into my new...

Just passing through... _________________________________________________________________________________ The Plan: We have a 12 hours to kill before our connecting flight to Palau...tour the island! The Reality: Ok, so we know we have been off the air for a bit and we have a lot of catching up to do. Right now we are in the Bali airport waiting to fly to Guam and then off to Palau. I am going to take a little time to update the commentary for the other dates before our flight and we have all day on Gaum tomorrow so we will try to find a...

May 29, 2005 - Flying Thru Guam
After packing and slipping out the back door of the Ryokan (doors are locked until 7 a.m.), I went to Kinko's to do updates. The server was down for a 30 minute update. Ugh. I wanted to get coffee but decided to get it at the airport. The information desk at the train station had told me that the best way to get back to the airport was to take the subway to Nippori, then catch the train from there. I decided to take the slow train and save $10. It was a milk run that stopped at every station between Nippori and the airport. There are two...
