May 21, 2013 - May 21, 2013 Kennesaw, Ga.
We left Charleston, SC this morning and headed to my brother Dan's home in Kennesaw, Ga. Our adventure has finally begun. This is the third year in a row we have tried to make a trip out west and each year something came up to make us change our plans. We decided that this year would be different. Though we have many things that need to be done we ARE headed out on our trip. Richard and Dan spent the afternoon visiting gun shops. I stayed at the coach and read it was a nice afternoon. We all went out to eat supper and came back to the house...

May 18, 2013 - Savannah
I have found that Trip Advisor’s app for the Ipad is a fantastic traveller’s friend! We discovered “Savannah Dan” through Trip Advisor. Learnt so much about Savannah, Georgia. It is a beautiful old southern town. Georgia named after King George was the 13th state to be established by the British, colonized by Oglethorpe with as Dan put it “Bristish white trash”. So a free state with no slaves because the idea was they were bringing cheap labour from Britain. Unfortunately, they were not as cheap as slaves so Georgia could not compete with...

May 17, 2013 - Tybee Island
I already had a booking in Savannah for the 18th the 20th but we were wondering what to do for the one night before that? Terry had been saying how much she missed the ocean now she lives in Arizona, so I suggested a night at the beach? Somewhere very near Savannah so we could get in there early the next morning and see the sites. We did not realize we had picked the night of the “Beach Bum” Parade - it was really a giant water fight. Luckily we got there as they were still setting up and viewed the parade from an upstairs window! The kids...

May 13, 2013 - Homeward Bound
We have decided to go home a couple of days early, as pretty and interesting as this area is we are not really beach people and wanted to save our money for our next trip in June. The view was pretty tho, while we packed up to go. We drove about half way home and stopped at the Cordele GA KOA park. It was really nice, situated in an old pecan grove with beautiful large trees evenly spaced throughout the park. Very quite and peaceful evening under the cool shade trees. We made it on home the next day without incident. About the first or...

May 13, 2013 - Pointes West Army FAMCAMP, Augusta, GA
When Rebecca drove the rig out of the Fort Benning FAMCAMP we had a little rain storm chasing us half way across Georgia. However, by lunch time and the driver switch it had cleared up for Dave to pull into our next stop at the end of our 263 mile journey for the day. This is a familiar place to our long time readers. Our eldest son lives in the area, so when we're in the southeast states we stop. We will be here for 19 days. For our military friends out there, if you haven't stopped here, do so. It is a great place to stay, inexpensive...

May 12, 2013 - St. George's Island
Another beautiful day at the beach. We drove along the beautiful scenic drive and went to Eastpoint, FL and drove over some very long bridges to St. George's Island. There was white sand everywhere. St. George's Island is long and narrow and after you drive down the one long road the length of the island you can began to see the ocean from both sides of the road. It was a new experience for me as I have never been in a place where you could do that. There is a regular small village with stores and houses in the wide part and then you turn...

May 11, 2013 - On the Gulf
We are in the Ho-Hum RV park in Carrabelle, FL. I found it on the internet and it is a rare find. Very reasonably priced and we are parked right on the edge of St. George's Sound which has a wide opening directly to the Gulf of Mexico. We almost did not get a spot. They gave us the last spot they had open which was right next to the road. Then they called us and had had a cancellation and had the beach spot which we took of course. We left our curtains open on the windshield so we could watch the waves come in. It was great. You can fish...

May 11, 2013 - Neels Gap
Quick stop, posting to say we're still alive. The trail is rough, but we're hanging in there. Blisters, sore muscles, and lots of rain. No bears yet, thanks goodness because I feel asleep last night with a wrapper in my pocket. We'll have more time to post pictures when we stay overnight in Fontana Village, NC!

May 10, 2013 - Skidaway Island, GA to Savannah, GA by way of Tybee Island, GA
Day 8 part deux: Destination: Downtown Savannah We took showers and packed up camp in the morning, and then drove to Tybee Island for lunch. We ate at Fannie's on the Beach to get our seafood fix. Everyone seemed to enjoy their food, especially Lauren, who looked like she hadn't seen food in days when her crab legs arrived at the table. I don't think I've ever seen anyone so excited to eat lunch. We walked the pier and stopped in some tourist shops before heading to downtown Savannah. We got a hotel room, and ended up finding street...

May 10, 2013 - Beautiful day at Callaway Gardens
We arrived yesterday at Pine Mountain, GA. We are staying at the Roosevelt State Park. They have very large and beautiful campsites. We spent the day at Callaway Gardens. We watched the "Birds of Prey" demonstration, featuring a red shouldered hawk, a red-tailed hawk, a falcon, and a horned owl. We then toured the butterfly house, the horticulture center, and site where "Victory Gardens South" is filmed. Callaway Gardens is much larger than I had thought and takes up miles of rolling countryside. My favorite is always the butterfly houses...

Day 7 part deux: Destination Savannah, GA We left our amazing hosts this morning to head over to Savannah. Thanks Joe and Megan for allowing us to take over your small apartment and for showing us around. We all had a fantastic time and wish we could have spent another two weeks with you! I hope your engagement pictures were awesome today. I experienced a weird feeling today... hunger. That is until we got to The Wilkes House. So. Much. Food... It was ridiculous. We had to wait outside for about 25 minutes, but when you get inside, you...

May 6, 2013 - Here we go!
Spent the day packing up and cleaning up. Got done early so we hiked the last 3 miles of the Pine Mt. trail. This was a great month, spent a lot of time hiking and seeing Columbus and LaGrange. Went to Callaway Gardens twice got in free due to retired military status. Having my last Fox Pizza tonight. Early to bed and up at dawn to hook up and drive to Troy Alabama. See ya.
