Nov 10, 2012 - Into FL Tomorrow

Quiet day today, 11/10, resting, biking, cleaning. PERFECT weather all day long. Park is crowded for the weekend. Yesterday went to Okefenokee Swamp Park and then a drive to the coast for another DDD meal. Tomorrow into FL for three nights along the Atlantic.

Nov 8, 2012 - Laura Walker SP in GA

Pleasant enough trip from Santee SP in SC to Laura Walker SP in GA. A check in w/ Staples for computer advice (not good) and a stop at WalMart. Returned digital camera device sold with the promise it would work on my camera--not! Checked w/ Verizon and had good news on roaming charges (none for me). Bought more cat food for lost souls (4 legged) I encounter :-( & a couple things for me -- cheap soup, windshield washer fluid, sweatshirt top. WONDERFUL morning wake-up watching the sun come up over Marion Lake. Rest area in GA offering free...

Oct 15, 2012 - Trip to Surrency/Baxley

We headed out this morning to go visit my sister, Gail, and Alfred and Pinky (their American Bulldog). They moved from near Ocala, Florida, and have a beautiful piece of land between Surrency and Baxley, GA. The trip went well until the British Tart on the GPS wanted us to turn down a narrow dirt road. We kept on going, and she "recalculated" to go the way we knew to go. The new property they have is mostly 20 year old planted pine trees. They have a three bedroom house with a great porch for rocking on. They have put in a pool with a...

Oct 14, 2012 - Rainy Sunday in Waycross

We went out to lunch with Aunt Betty and cousins to the new Olive Garden. Wisely, we went early and did not have to wait for a table. Before we left there was a long wait list. The weather was the direct opposite of yesterday...cooler and rainy. The cousins had to be back home for work, so they packed up and left after lunch. Again, we skipped cooking supper and vegged out.

Oct 13, 2012 - Bates Reunion

The weather could not have been any more perfect for the reunion. Bates kin folk started arriving before 11, and by 12:30 there were about 36 relatives dishing up food as only a family reunion can provide. Two long tables were groaning with everything from fresh sliced tomatoes to fresh pork roast cooked an a grill. A third table held the dessert goodies. The oldest Bates grandchild was in attendance as was the youngest Bates grandchild. Several great-grandchildren came, too. The youngest great-grandchild is about 18 months old and did not...

Fall 2012

Oct 12, 2012 - Waycross, GA

We followed US 1 South across Georgia to Waycross. The weather was gorgeous, sunny with a cool breeze. We stopped for lunch in Wrens, GA, at the Dutch Mill Cafe. We stopped because the parking lot was big enough to park Arvy and because there were lots of local cars there. We discovered that the restaurant is owned by Mennonites. The food was served cafeteria style. A meat, two vegetables, salad, bread, dessert, and drink was $11.99....delicious. We bought a chocolate cream pie and cookies at their bakery to take to the reunion. We had a...

Apr 24, 2009 - one last look

A north-side disappointment turns to gold in the end - Friday, April 24 A map of the Okefenokee Swamp shows three public entrances. The west entrance is at Stephen Foster State Park, where we fell in love with the place and spent the first three nights. The east entrance near Folkston is where we continued our love affair and education for the next two days. That brings us to the north entrance out of Waycross, Georgia - a private venture called Okefenokee Swamp Park that bears little resemblance to what we’ve seen up to now. Park rangers...

May 26, 2008 - Laura S Walker State Park 2008 Memorial Day

Well, this 2008 Memorial Day Wekkend was a great time. The family and I headed to Laura S Walker State Park. We had a spot on the lake with a great view. The first night, we had a large thunderstorm come through (first one we have had since camping) and the camper held up very well. The next day, we spent time swimming at the pool, fishing, and relaxing. Sunday, we went to a reptile forum the park put on and it was very interesting. We even had a snake in one of the windows that was not part of the show. The ranger took it and added the...

Dec 7, 2007 - Savannah, GA

We stayed at Skidaway Island located near historic downtown Savannah. The island is a barrier island that has both salt and fresh water. It had two nature trails that wound through marshes, live oaks, cabbage-palmettos and longleaf pines. We saw deer and shore birds, but were disappointed that we did not see the Painted Bunting which can be found migrating through this area. Bruce's cousin, John and his wife, Anna Maria live in a very nice Savannah suburb. We spent an evening visiting with them at their home, and then they took us to dinner...
