Oct 24, 2012 - Roosevelt's vacation hometown...

Trying to keep the maps more up-to-date here.... (just for you, Dale! ^_^) We're here for the night in a Mom & Pop park ... half mobile home park to the west of the land and half small RV park in the east. "Pop"is 78 years old! Anyway it's really neat... quiet, grassy level lots with city water and big shade trees. Neat overnight. We've already seen the "Little White House" and there isn't much going on at Callaway Gardens this time of year so we'll just head on out tomorrow. After finding a secondary route... we were taking the back roads...

Apr 13, 2011 - Peace and quiet, love it

Wednesday, April 13, 2011 Monday we packed up and took off on a beautiful morning. We had a nice short, but scenic, drive north into Georgia. There are just a whole lot of nice pine and maple trees in Georgia. We rolled into F.D. Roosevelt St. Pk. about 10:30 am. I immediately recognized that the CCC boys had been here. There was a beautiful 2 story stone building that was the registration building sitting on the top of Pine Mountain overlooking a broad, green valley. It was interesting to step in the door as it so closely resembled all the...

Feb 20, 2011 - Meriwether-Pike Scenic Byway

I went to Warm Springs, GA to see the “Little White House”. A house that FDR built in the 1920’s so he could visit the hot springs in the area as a therapy for his polio. He also established a rehabilitation center that is operated today by the State of Georgia. The Scenic Byway apparently traces some of FDR’s favorite routes through Meriwether and Pike counties. Much of the time he drove himself in a hand controlled car. They had one of his cars, a 1940 Ford V8 roadster, on display at the museum. After the museum, I walked around Warm...

Mar 15, 2010 - FDR's Little White House

We got to spend the afternoon today with our RVing friends, Mike and Gerri. We first met this fine couple early in January while we were at Rainbow Plantation in Summerdale, Alabama. We were glad for the opportunity to get together with them again. Mike suggested we meet for lunch at The Bulloch House in Warm Springs. This historic home was built in 1893 by Benjamin Bulloch. Mr. Bulloch was the co-founder of Bullochville, what we now know as Warm Springs. At Bulloch’s you can gorge yourself at the buffet or order off the menu. We all...

Mar 23, 2009 - Pine Mountain, GA (Callaway Gardens)

Today we travel to Pine Mountain, GA. When we lived in GA years ago we loved to visit Callaway Gardens here in the spring. The azaleas, dogwoods and other flowers are a beautiful spring treat. We weren’t disappointed as the flowers were wonderful. There are miles of wonderful bike trails here and we planned to be able to ride on them throughout the gardens. Unfortunately the weather didn’t allow that, in fact, it rained 3 days straight day and night while we were there. We did enjoy 3 sunny days so we were able to get our spring flower...

Many bills he wrote and signed were for their benefit. i.e. the New Deal The museum has many of his personal effects and the house is just as it was when he passed. A must see if you are in that part of GA.We drove out to the FDR State Pk but arrived to late. The campground was...

First TM Winter Trip

Dec 8, 2007 - Warm Springs / Atlanta, Ga

In a corner of the Appalachian foothills, just over the Georgia border, lies the village of Warm Springs, home to the "Little White House", a restful retreat for former President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Known for the warm restorative waters that flow from underground springs, the President, who had contracted polio in his earlier years, found this location to be of a particular benefit to his health. A simple mountain home became his refuge, and his neighbors in the community became the friends with whom he enjoyed spending his time. We had...

Oct 23, 2007 - The Little Whitehouse

Today started out very misty and gloomy so we decided to just go into the town of Pine Mountain and check it out.....They had a lot of cute little shops that we checked out, but not until finding a coffee house to start out our day... This was another Purple Cow Restaurant but not to be confused with the Purple Cow that we loved so much in Custer, SD.... The coffee was just so-so but we heard that the sandwiches were to die for.... The building itself was worth going inside... We walked through more of the town and saw the Post Office, City...

The Beginning

Feb 19, 2005 - The Little White House

Searching for relief from polio, F D Roosevelt first came to Warm Spring, Georgia in 1924 to swim in the spring’s naturally heated water. Enchanted with the area, he built a simple vacation cottage on the side of pine Mountain while running for president in 1932. During his trips to Georgia, he spent many hours visiting neighbours and learning of their difficulties, especially during the Great Depression. These experiences provided him with insight into the lives of everyday Americans and helped him develop New Deal policies such as the...
